Ubuntu 20.04, Wireless Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 hangs intermitantly

Hi, hoping someone can point me in the right direction here for a fix to this issue. Running Ubuntu 20.04 on an HP EliteBook with a Centrino Advanced-N 6205 wireless adapter. The adapter stops responding on a regular basis which makes anything I need to access the internet for a painful experience.
I know this is not related to my radio signal from the wireless router or the ISP as all other devices connected to my wifi router do not experience the issue when the issue is seen on Ubuntu. If I ping 8.8.8.8 I may get 15 responses before the connection drops.

Output of Wireless-Info attached. https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/5pPvN6pQTf/

Many thanks

[ubuntu] OpenVPN looping

Open VPN tried to open but gets an error and then tries again. I installed it about a week ago and it worked fine for about 5 days. I need someone to help me understand what the syslog is telling me. I have copied part of the log below. I am using Ubuntu 20.04 which I upgraded about two weeks ago. It's talking about a pid file that can't be found???

Malfunctioning WiFi Card?

Recently I my WiFi just stopped. This is on an HP ProBook which until recently would have WiFi for a few hours, or a couple of days, then the WiFi would stop. But restarting the computer brought back the WiFi. Now restarting the computer does not bring back WiFi. Pleases look at the below output and tell me what you think the problem could be.

Code:

Netplan Bridge 2 Ethernet Interfaces

Hi,

I would like to know if possible to create a bridge with 2 ethernet interfaces?
- eno1 LAN
- eno2 WAN

Code:

network:  version: 2
  renderer: networkd
  ethernets:
    eno1:
      dhcp4: no
      dhcp6: no
      addresses: [10.6.0.200/24]
      gateway4: 10.6.0.2
      nameservers:
        addresses: [10.6.0.2]
    eno2:
      dhcp4: no
      dhcp6: no
      addresses: [191.102.89.156/30]
      gateway4: 191.102.89.155
      nameservers:
        addresses: [9.9.9.9]

So ENO2 can see LAN ping -I eno2 10.6.0.100 for example, any advice or recommendation with Netplan will be really appreciate it!

Thank in advance for your help

Web server on Ubuntu VM

$

I apologize in advance if this isn't the correct forum. My issue involves Ubuntu, Apache, and Virtualbox - so I'm starting here. I hope someone will be generous enough with their time and patience to help me with what I suspect might be a very simple problem.

GOAL: My ultimate goal is to develop a web application for personal use, running from Apache on Ubuntu Server within Virtualbox on my Windows 10 host. At a minimum, I need to access this web application from other devices and VM's within my LAN. Down the road, it would be nice to be able to get to it from the outside, but that doesn't concern me right now.

SETUP:
  • The physical host is a Windows 10 laptop.
  • I installed Ubuntu Server on Vbox
  • I installed Apache on the server and the localhost reports an IP of 10.0.2.15, which does in fact load the default Apache page in the graphical browser within Ubuntu server.
  • I installed Ubuntu Desktop as a separate VM in Windows

PROBLEM:

I cannot reach the default Apache page from either the Ubuntu Desktop VM or a Windows browser. In Ubuntu the connection is refused, in Windows it times out.

STEPS TAKEN TO RESOLVE:
  • I shut down my Windows firewall
  • I have a NAT, a bridged network connection, and a host only connection all set up on the VM and they all report as being connected.

‐------

I'm not completely ignorant with regard to networking or with linux, but what I thought would be a routine first step for my project is being stymied by what I think has to be a simple oversight on my part. I'm convinced it has something to do with the network setup on Virtualbox or with the IP address needed to access the server.

Thanks to anyone with some advice here.

'Activation of network connection failed' error on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

Hi all,

Brand new linux user here. I installed Ubuntu 20.04 LTS 2 days ago on and old desktop that I haven't used for years.

I have not been able to get my WiFi connection working in the Ubuntu OS. Some notes that may be helpful:
- I am receiving the error 'Activation of network connection failed'
- I have tried connecting to a second WiFi connection with the same error
- All other devices are able to connect to same WiFi router without issue (windows PC, Mac laptop and mobile devices)
- Wired connection is working fine on the Ubuntu desktop
- I don't have any other OS installed on the machine so am not able to test the wireless connection from Windows
- Wireless card I am using is a 'Qualcomm Atheros'

I've been reading through the other related posts on this forum and have not been able to resolve the issue. I found this old link on this - https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=370108, which is a very old link, but I could not see a new method I should be following. I went through the steps and I have attached the log file of my wireless info.

Thanks in advance and appreciate any support you can provide.

Share Internet Connection(Wi-Fi) over Dial up(don't ask why)

To put it simply, I have a USB Dial up Modem that works pretty great. And I want to create my own "Dial Up ISP". I already managed to get a server working(with mgetty and some config), like with a login into my system. I was able to install packages on another PC. Basically it was like SSH. But now I want to get my Ubuntu 20.04 to "send" the Wifi connection over the phoneline. Also if it helps, I have a USRobotics Model 5637 USB Modem.
Has anyone got a way for me to do it?
I would love reliving the old 90s Dial up Experience, without having to install Windows XP.

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 20.04 upgraded some network-manager packages, now problems are ensuing

First of all, these issues only started on 20.04 after a recent network-manager upgrade (and the related components such as network-manager-gnome) and this is a laptop, HP envy m7-n101dx running 20.04. I have tried disabling power management on the device via two commands (I didn't write them down) given to me from someone on IRC. They essentially disabled power management for Wireless. Before that I was getting disconnected and had to manually reconnect to get back online. At least it's not permanent or requiring a reboot every time. I ran the command sudo lshw -C network and I apparently have an Intel Wireless 7265 card. I know these are plaguing users of the forums with issues related to their power management. But the real issue is recently it disconnected right after startup. Literally seconds after logging and directly from cold boot and the boot screen, instant disconnect. These issues have never happened on older releases or packages on this laptop. And it was gone for a while, so I was hoping it was done for. Any ideas what is going on and how to fix it? For a more detailed look at the command output, see below:

Output of sudo lshw -C network: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/B5dFjqJhh6/

SSH port forwarding

Hi everyone,

To get remote access to my home server (running Ubuntu Server 20), I forwarded port 22 to port 3xxxx in my rounter.

In /etc/ssh/sshd_config, I inserted:

Code:

AllowTcpForwarding remote
GatewayPorts yes

But I still get a "Operation timed out" when I try to log in via

Code:

ssh user@[external ip] -p 3xxxx
I am able to ping [external ip] -p 3xxxx

What is missing?

thanks, geb

[SOLVED] How to setup UFW to allow local Kubernetes ?

$

Hello,

I am currently trying to learn Kubernetes and decided to give a try to microk8s.
The problem is that I am stuck because my UFW rules are blocking microk8s.

I am using a fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04.
Bellow are the command I used to setup a VPN kill-switch (Followed this guide: https://gist.github.com/Necklaces/18...12b2d90d0cded2)
Code:

sudo ufw default deny outgoing
sudo ufw default deny incoming
sudo ufw allow out on tun0 from any to any
sudo ufw allow out 1198/udp
sudo ufw allow in 1198/udp

Right after that, I did install microk8s via snap, install the dashboard and see what is the ip of the dashboard:
Code:

sudo snap install microk8s --classic --channel=1.18/stable
microk8s enable dashboard dns
kubectl get all --all-namespaces

When I open Firefox to access the dashboard via the IP I see in the output (10.152.183.90), it is unable to load the page: "Unable to connect".
I thought the problem must be coming from UFW, so I did temporarily disable the firewall and tried to access the page.
Without the firewall enabled, it works fine, I can access the dashboard.

Right after that I did some research, I found some post about similar issues.
It seems that I should unblock a few ports for Kubernetes, and I did add these rules:
Code:

$ sudo ufw allow 179/tcp
$ sudo ufw allow 4789/tcp
$ sudo ufw allow 5473/tcp
$ sudo ufw allow 443/tcp
$ sudo ufw allow 6443/tcp
$ sudo ufw allow 2379/tcp
$ sudo ufw allow 4149/tcp
$ sudo ufw allow 10250/tcp
$ sudo ufw allow 10255/tcp
$ sudo ufw allow 10256/tcp
$ sudo ufw allow 9099/tcp

But that did not help, I am still unable to access the dashboard page if the firewall is active.

I also tried adding this rules, but it doesn't seems to help so I deleted this one.
Code:

sudo ufw allow out from any to 10.152.183.0/24
Any suggestions ?

A new install fails to discover wifi networks. Turning networking and wireless off then on sometimes lets SSIDs become visible. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Wireguard at home question

Hi,

I want to install and configure Wireguard at home, but I have one question that can't seem to find an answer to online:

If I setup a dedicated Wireguard box at home, can I use it for with my in-home clients?

Basically it would be like running my own VPN service at home.

That's it. Thank you.

Correct way to disable wifi adapter

hi, im using Ubuntu 20.04 and like to know how we could disable the wifi adapter. i need to re-enable it when needed.

this command will disable the adapter - ifconfig wlan1 down. so i think adding a script and run at system boot will solve this.

so i add 'disablewifi.sh' with the command below, add the script into '/etc/init.d' folder and make it executable by running 'chmod +x disablewifi.sh'
Code:

#!/bin/bash
sudo ifconfig wlan1 down

but the system lockup when rebooting with this repeating message-
Code:

...mmc0: timeout waiting for hardware interrupt.
luckily its an external wifi adapter so i unplug it and switch off the power and reboot. then all ok and back to CLI

p/s - it is wlan1 bcoz its an external adapter. i only hv wifi connection, so jus to be safe, i test on an external adapter

p/ss - hv tried adding this into /etc/rc.local file, but it doesn't seem to do anything so i try this instead

Please advice.

Thank you,

Hi everyone!

I'm building a NextCloud server on an old laptop for my daughter, (you would be amazed how many pictures and videos a 14 year old can take!), and I'm having problems with the WiFi. Here are the steps that I'm taking to get the WiFI working:

sudo apt install wireless-tools wpasupplicant -y
wpa_passphrase XXXXXXX XXXXXXXX | sudo tee /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
sudo wpa_supplicant -B -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -i wlp1s0
sudo dhclient wlp1s0
ip addr show wlp1s0
sudo cp /lib/systemd/system/wpa_supplicant.service /etc/systemd/system/wpa_supplicant.service
sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/wpa_supplicant.service

I comment out "#ExecStart=/sbin/wpa_supplicant -u -s -O /run/wpa_supplicant" and Alias=dbus-fi.w1.wpa_supplicant1.service and I replace it with:

ExecStart=/sbin/wpa_supplicant -u -s -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -i wlp1s0

sudo systemctl enable wpa_supplicant.service

sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/dhclient.service

///////

sudo nano /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf

///////

After I reboot, I can connect to the WiFi connection via ssh, however, the NIC keeps dropping the connection. At first I thought that maybe I had a bad NIC, but I have tried Broadcom, Atheros and Intel NIC's with the same results.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what the problem is?

Thanks!

ipv4 listening ports

Hi,

We have an application that needs ports listening to 80/443 to requests a ceritificate, we thought that the issue is on the external facing since the public IP is NAT'ed to this local server. On the external side we set to allow any just for troubleshooting purposes. So on the internal side I did a command sudo netstat -tulpn | grep LISTEN to check for listening ports and it showed the output below

tcp 0 0 127.0.0.53:53 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 753/systemd-resolve
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:22 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 1198/sshd
tcp6 0 0 :::80 :::* LISTEN 1803/docker-proxy
tcp6 0 0 :::22 :::* LISTEN 1198/sshd
tcp6 0 0 :::443 :::* LISTEN 1790/docker-proxy

port 22(SSH) is working internal or external, so I can see that ports 80 and 443 listens to ipv6, I tried disabling IPv6 by putting the following commands

net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv6.conf.lo.disable_ipv6 = 1

reboot the server but still the same issue. I need ports 80 and ports 443 to listen to ipv4, tried researching but can't find one.

Appreciate any help
Thanks
