Disclaimer: I'm not knowledgeable about linux, have used it for years tho and have to troubleshoot things once in a while.

My internet has stopped connecting, it might have broken after I forced a shutdown on the laptop after it froze on me. At the moment I'm using the internet using USB tethering on my phone, so there's no issue. But can't pick up my hotspot, router wifi, doesnt pick up internet via cable/wired. I'm breaking my brain trying all sorts of things from other threads but think I need to ask help now. Here is the code:

Help would be much appreciated I am in lockdown and seriously need my laptop to work.

[ubuntu] Can't access Windows shared folder from Ubuntu 18.04

Hi all,
I'm currently working from home and I need to connect to a Windows share from a server placed in my company headquarters.
The problem is that when I try to access from Nautilus, I simply cannot access, as it keeps asking username and password in a loop.
Actually I can connect normally to other Windows shares: I'm having problems only with this particular one. I tried with my Windows 10 laptop and it worked, so it's a problem related to my Ubuntu client.

The problem is that I don't have access to the server, and I don't know it's configuration; the company technical helpdesk offers support only for Windows client.
I've read of similar problems and usually the solution involves modifications on Samba configuration but, as said, I don't have access to it.
Any suggestion?

[ubuntu] How do I block access to certain website through my ubuntu server 18.04?

I have setup an ubuntu server 18.04 as a network router at a high school through which internet is being accessed by everyone in the school community. I now want to block access to certain websites like facebook.com, youtube.com as well as all adult content websites for obvious reasons.

Thank you

Wireguard interface gets no ipv4 address

Wireguard has been working fine on this Kubuntu 20.04 install for a while. Now for some reason when I try to bring up a new interface with wg-quick, it gets no IP address assigned. Is anyone else seeing this when trying to create a new Wireguard interface?

Here's the ifconfig after it's brought up:
Code:

wg1: flags=209<UP,POINTOPOINT,RUNNING,NOARP>  mtu 1420
        unspec 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00  txqueuelen 1000  (UNSPEC)
        RX packets 3  bytes 156 (156.0 B)
        RX errors 0  dropped 0  overruns 0  frame 0
        TX packets 25  bytes 22144 (22.1 KB)
        TX errors 0  dropped 0 overruns 0  carrier 0  collisions 0

There should be an IPv4 address, but there's none.

wg show output:
Code:

interface: wg0
  public key: <redacted>
  private key: (hidden)
  listening port: 44429
  fwmark: 0xca6c

peer: <redacted>
  endpoint: 192.168.11.88:51820
  allowed ips: 0.0.0.0/0, ::/0
  latest handshake: 26 seconds ago
  transfer: 156 B received, 21.62 KiB sent

Here's the config file:
Code:

[Interface]
Address = 10.0.0.2/32
PrivateKey = <redacted>
DNS = 8.8.8.8

[Peer]
PublicKey = <redacted>
AllowedIPs = 0.0.0.0/0,::0/0
Endpoint = 192.168.11.88:51820

Right now I'm doing this just to test performance on a router that's acting as wg server. So I have it on a private network. There is some L2 traffic moving since I can see the handshake on the wg server and a few bytes moving.

I had another interface on this PC that was set up earlier, associated with a different endpoint, and it was still functioning fine. I could bring it up with "wg-quick up wg0" and it has the IP assigned and connectivity is working.

Thinking it was just a problem with interface creation I've tried the following:

  1. Create the interface through the connections GUI in system settings. Same behavior. The IP is visible in the output of "nmcli -s c show wg1" and in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/wg1.nmconnection. Interestingly, the interface gets a link-local ipv6 address in this config, since ipv6 address mode is required (and disabled is not available in the GUI). Setting it to ignore gives a link-local that does respond to a ping. Still no ipv4.
  2. Create the interface through nmcli. Same as above, the IP is in the stored configuration.
  3. Next I removed all the Wireguard interfaces (including the working one), restarted, and then tried to set up only the previously-working interface wg0, with the same config file that was used previously (a 3 or so of months ago). That interface now has the same problem.
  4. Thinking it could be caused by an update, I reverted the wireguard and wireguard-tools to the 20.04 release versions (apt-get install wireguard=1.0.20200319-1ubuntu1 wireguard-tools=1.0.20200319-1ubuntu1). Then I tried to wg-quick up that previously-working wg0.conf file. Same behavior. I upgraded back to current.

Any ideas about what might be happening? Can anyone else reproduce this?
Thanks for any ideas!

TP-Link TL-WN821N stoped working no "enable WiFi" in networking pop down

Hi All,

I have a problem with a TP-Link TL-WN821N on a DEL VOSTRO-260 running Ubuntu 16.04.

This has been working well for years and a couple of days ago on longer works
No WiFi connection.

The Device shows up in lsusb but in the networking pop down there is no "Enable WiFi"
line usually directly under the "Enable Networking" line and no list of router SSID's to connect to.

This device works on my other computer a DELL VOSTRO-230 also running Ubuntu 16.04

Thanks for and help or guidance you can provide.

using netplan to create a gateway

$

hi all,

I am trying to use netplan to setup a gateway. Here are some details of what I have set up:
1) I'm running 20.04
2) I have 5 NICs (enp5s0, enp4s0f1, enp4s0f0, enp3s0f1, enp3s0f0)
3) The enp4* and enp3* NICs are on a single PCIx card
4) The gateway sits behind my ISP provided router (it is garbage but works most of the time). The gateway is statically configured to 192.168.0.50 and it connects via enp5s0. The ISP router is on 192.168.0.1
5) the 4 NICs on the card will service various other upstream laptops/tablets/phones/other switches/desktops and forward everything to my isp router. There are ~20 devices upstream from the gateway.
6) The gateway has pihole installed on it. Pihole is configured (via dnsmasq i believe) to provide IP4 addresses in 192.168.1.1/24
7) netplan is setup with the following (copied from screen because the machine has no internet connectivity. there might be copy errors):
Code:

network:
  version: 2
  renderer: networkd
  ethernets:
    enp5s0:
      dhcp4: no
      addresses: [192.168.0.50/24]
      gateway4: 192.168.0.1
    switchports:
      match:
        name: enp[3-4]*
  bridges:
    br0:
      interfaces: [enp5s0, switchports]
      addresses: [192.168.1.1/24]
      dhcp4: true

This configuration generates and applies without error.

8) I have setup iptables to NAT from enp5s0 and br0 (iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o enp5s0 -j MASQUERADE)

However, I am having mixed results:
1) I can connect to 192.168.1.1 pihole interface from the gateway
2) the clients behind the gateway are served IP addresses successfully
3) the clients behind the gateway can access the pihole interface

but:
4) I cant ping 8.8.8.8 from the gateway. Which pretty much sums it up. Connectivity from the gateway to the internet isnt working so upstream clients cant connect either

My route tables looks like this:
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface
0.0.0.0 192.168.0.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 enp5s0
192.168.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 enp5s0
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 br0

Any ideas on what I can try to make this work?

Hi everbody
I noted that my (still working) WiFi connection started being rather slow recently.
I attached the wireless info file generated by the e wireless info script.
I am using Ubuntu 18.04.4 on a Dell Vostro Computer 5490.
I hope I gave you all the information you need to give me some hint to fix this issue.
Thank you

PS
When I installed Ubuntu (6 months ago) I had serious problems in making the WiFi working.
After several attempts it worked with some trick found on internet, that unfortunately I do not remember...

Hi all,

Ubuntu 18.04 Gnome desktop

My PC is connected to FTTH network with 500M up/down speed. I expect to monitor the instant speed of the network.

Just I have NetSpeed installed on -> Activities. It is now displayed on the right corner of the top menu bar (please see attached photo). But it is too small. Neither I understand its indication.

Please advise which package I need to install ? Thanks

Besides neither I can find it on Terminal running;

Wifi on--Internet down

Hello,
I am fairly new to linux and know a few of the basic commands.

I have a seemingly random problem with my internet connection. The internet connection will drop, but the wifi will still show connected to y ATT modem. I can resume using the internet connections after turning off, then on the wifi connection.

I have tried troubleshooting the issue myself, but it is beyond my capabilities and would like some help.

  • nmcli will show change connectivity from full to limited.
  • Ip address still shows my ip address
  • Cannot ping modem, other local machines or internet
  • Can ping localhost

Thanks for your help

[all variants] Linux Driver for the RealTek RTL8812BU and RTL8822BU Chipsets

https://github.com/morrownr/88x2bu

Driver version 5.8.7.1, 2019-11-19, from Realtek. I have tested the driver on Ubuntu 20.04, Linux Mint 20 and Linux Mint 19.3. I saw clean compiles on all three tests. Basic function tests on a rtl8812bu chipset based USB device were successful.

My To-Do list includes adding dkms support. I am not an expert with dkms yet so if there are any dkms experts that would like to help, let me know.

[ubuntu] How to debug intermittent ssh tunnel?

I use an ssh tunnel from my ubuntu laptop to ubuntu running on an AWS server.

I use this command: `ssh user@server -D8080 -v -N` and set the system's socks proxy to localhost:8080.

I am mainly streaming videos through chrome and/or firefox.

It works a treat, for "a while", but sooner or late it will 'hang', whereby the stream will stop, and I cannot get any web site on other tabs either. If I wait, it will eventually unblock itself for a period of time (seconds, minutes) before blocking again. If I have the debug option on sshd, I see a flurry of activity when it unblocks...

I don't know where the blockage is happening, so I'm not sure where to start.

Any idea how I can attempt to debug this?

[ubuntu] Wired connection disconnecting automatically

I used to have ubuntu 16.04 in my Toshiba laptop. There everything was fine. In July 2020, I thought to upgrade it. I was successful till ubuntu 18.04 and then started for next upgrade for 20.04. In between, laptop got switched off and I lost the track. I installed ubuntu 20.04 using an USB. Now everything else is working fine other then network issue. I am using wired connection and it connects well. Since, it stops working after 10 minutes. After that either I have to disconnect the cable and connect it back or I have to disable connection and enable it in network setting. Can you please suggest me the solution to get out from this problem?

[ubuntu] Help setting up File server

I'm trying to repurpose an old PC into a file server for a home network. I have followed several tutorials and no matter what I do I can't seem to make the connection.
My current setup is: Fresh Install of Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS with Gnome version 3.36.3. All I have done is install samba then used the gnome "files" gui to share a folder in my home directory. I get a green sharing icon next to the folder. That didn't work so I modified the smb config file to Homegroup=THEFORCE (name of my homegroup on the windows pc).
On my windows PC (client) I have downloaded SMB share prot. and activated all sharing options. At the moment I'm not worried about passwords so all passwords are disabled. Weirdly I do detect the server in Windows Media Player, but I don't want to use Windows Media Player.
Everything is hard wired right now. Both server and client connected through ethernet to my router. But I will be adding wireless clients eventually.

In the past I have tried: Configuring all of samba through terminal. Copy pasting smb configs from Git. Using Samba 4k. Set up a Plex Server (worked but not what I wanted). Several remote desktop options (some connect but again not how i want it setup).

I'm new-ish to Ubuntu and seriously outdated on my server knowledge (circa 2000).
