Share Internet connection with external device

$

Hello,

I encountered problems while trying to share an internet connection with an external device (BeagleBone Black in this case), connected to the Ubuntu host via an Ethernet cable.
With these setting (please, see screenshot below) I can connect to BBB over ssh, but can't get Internet. When I specify DHCP nothing works: I even can't get connection over ssh.
What should I check/modify ?

Thanks.

[server] Ethernet is working but network manager says it has never been used

I am setting up a new server on Ubuntu 20.04 server using the Mate DE. It is connected via ethernet (eno1) and is working fine. I attempted to set a static address using the advanced network connections in the control panel, but when I first opened it, I was informed there were no network connections. I added a network connection identifying eno1 as the ethernet device in my computer and set all the normal parameters including a static address 192.186.1.186. I saved the settings, rebooted the computer and there were no changes.

The small network icon in the upper right corner (resembles an open fan) indicates there are no connections. The Ethernet Network option on the drop down menu is grayed out. When I click on Edit Connections it says my ethernet connection has never been used. The enable networking option is checked and (as you can see from this message) the network is working fine. I just have no way to manage it.

What have I done wrong and how can I set a static IP address if this isn't working?

Can't delete wired connection

Hello,

I am facing a strange problem: I cannot remove a wired connection.
Every time I restart the system, this connection reappears.
On the screenshot below, there is the connection with the IP 169.254.8.32 which is not removable.

What should I check to remove it definitely ?
Another oddity (probably related to this issue): Ubuntu boot time has become very long - at least 3 min.

Thanks in advance.

LAN/WLAN vs. Internet lags

Running 2 computers from my home, a dedicated Lubuntu 20.04 server and a windows PC. Server's only purpose to run a a MUD server (text based game), as well as compile code and draw from bitbucket as myself and various admin's make changes to the code. I am using no-ip to host my static IP. Before updating from Lubuntu 17 to 19, I had no lag when SSH'ing into the server from either my work or from my windows PC, using the no-ip website as my connection instead of the 192.168.0.*. The server, which uses telnet protocols, also had no issues nor did the server generated website. after updating to 19, I had issues with SSH files, X11 forwarding, as well as other issues but lag was still not an issue. With the release of 20.04 LTS, I did a proper fresh Lubuntu install, and setup SSH, mySQL, the compilers etc and the server is up and running with no hassle, other then...

Anyone other then my own home network can connect to the server via the no-ip redirect with no issues. I can do it from work, connecting either to the website, the game server or SSH, no issues. But when I try it from my own home I get horrid lag on all services running. SSH is slow, the website is horrendous, and the telnet game lags. As a test, I tried this from my cellphone at home while connected to the Wi-Fi, results like I said. As soon as I disconnected Wi-Fi and ran off the cellphone data speeds were good across all platforms running. The Lubuntu server itself suffers no issues with connection to the internet and it is plugged directly into the router and not over Wi-Fi.

Any ideas as to what changed from version 17 to 20 that could have caused this? I can only assume I am overlooking some local network setting I do not know about.

Thank you and Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!

Hi,

[ubuntu] No wifi after cold reboot on Ubuntu 20.04

Hello,

TL;DR

I recently cold booted my laptop and the wifi stopped working. Both wifi and bluetooth don't work but my priority is having wifi working. I tried searching for a solution for three days (including pertinent bugs and patches). However, I have not been able to find a fix yet. It used to work before and I have the wireless-info.txt for that too. If needed, I can upload it too.

Hi,

I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS from Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, after getting upgrade suggestions from software updater. In Ubuntu 18.04, internet was working properly both in Wifi and Ethernet, but now in Ubuntu 20.04 I have no internet connection.

I am new to Ubuntu. I have searched online for solution and checked the following things:

  1. dpkg -l *netplan
  2. cat /etc/network/interfaces
  3. cat /etc/netplan/*yaml
  4. sudo lshw -C network

Please find the screenshots in the following links:

2. https://cernbox.cern.ch/index.php/s/y2iFG1i85ud9hlO

I don't know what to do. I am really stuck. Can anyone please help me in this regard?

Thanks in advance.

USB Lan Adapter Woes

I picked up an 802.11ac USB adapter and have been having quite a few issues. The connections are very intermittent. It can sometimes take a while to connect and will experience frequent disconnects. The system was stable using an older 2.4ghz adapter.

I ran the wireless info script and the results are located here: https://pastebin.com/sqsbP7TA

What is the effect of using minstrel instead of minstrel_ht in 802.11n networks? In 802.11n networks minstrel_ht is the default rate control algorithm if I change this back to the original minstrel, what changes does it really cause? Is this advisable to do?

NIC issues in Xubuntu 14.04 after warm reboot from Windows - Dual boot

$

I've got a Dell Precision T5810 that is dual booting Windows 10 and Xubuntu 14.04. I know 14.04 is EOL but some software requires 14.04 still *cough* medical software *cough*. Xubuntu is the default option in Grub so when rebooting from Windows 10 the PC will reboot to Xubuntu. When this happens the NIC cannot communicate out the NIC port. If the PC is shutdown from Windows 10 and started backup into Xubuntu the NIC has no problems. Dell is hesitant to support anything related to Xubuntu since the workstation shipped with Windows 7.

I do see dhcpd sending out broadcast packets to get an IP but nothing is seen on the dhcp server in my router. There are link lights and flashes indicating traffic on the switchport and the NIC port on the workstation. I can ping 127.0.0.1

Dell's pre-boot diagnostics will fail the NIC if I reboot from Windows 10 into Xubuntu 14.04 then reboot and go directly to the pre-boot diagnostics. If I reboot Windows 10 and enter pre-boot diagnostics the NIC passes.

There are not differences in lsmod or dmesg for the networking between reboots when the NIC works and when it doesn't.

This issue is specific to the Dell Precision T5810. We have deployed dozens of T7810s and T7820s without an issue.

I can provide any necessary info needed if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Thank you

Can't find network printers

$

Hi

I have worked in the same office and on the same laptop for three years. Roughly 6-8 weeks ago I lost the ability to use or find network printers. I was using Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. Today I upgraded to 20.04 LTS, but the problem persists. I connect to the network via a cable and continue to use the internet via that cable.

When I try to "Add" a printer, a window opens where you can search for a printer on a network. I have both the correct printer name and it's IP address, but the window always reports "No printer was found at that address"

What might be going on?

Best regards
David

Ubuntu 20.04 - Wifi keeps disconnecting

$

Hello everyone!

Few months ago when I bought my new laptop (Acer Nitro AN515-43-R40X) I decided to install Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on it. So I'm a Linux novice :)

At the beginning I didn't have any network/WiFi issues, then roughly a month ago my WiFi connection started to drop. The connection is always up and working when I start the laptop but after few minutes of surfing the net, it gets disconnected. It happens almost instantly if I start to download something. Turning the wifi off and on from the GUI or issuing
Code:

sudo service network-manager restart
does always the trick to go back online. And then I get disconnected again.. Also, the issue is only with the WiFi, the net is stable using Ethernet cable.

I've tried few suggestions like, changing the powersafe to 2 (in /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf) and the suggestion to send ARP requests by a cron job, mentioned here https://askubuntu.com/questions/1230...reless-adaptor. Nothing helped so far.

I've run the wireless-info script mentioned here in the forum, let me attach the result of it.*

Could you please help me with this issue? Many thank in advance!
Daniel

*For some reason the pastebin thing didn't work for me: it seems to me that
Code:

ping -nc 3 -w 6 -i 0.2 paste.ubuntu.com
produces bad timing interval error for me.

I have 2 laptops, 1 Dell and 1 Lenovo. Both were recently upgraded from 18.04 to 20.04. With 18.04 both were able to automatically connect to the hidden WiFi whenever it was available. After the upgrade to 20.04, the Lenovo can still connect automatically to the same hidden WiFi - the Dell cannot and every time I have to connect manually. The settings are exactly the same in both laptops and the same as they were in 18.04.

This is very frustrating and since the Lenovo does not have this problem, I take it that it is not a matter of 20.04 not allowing automatic connections to hidden WiFi networks in general, but a bug in the Dell's 20.04 installation.

Can anyone recommend a solution?

Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX1650i 160MHz Wireless- dropping after modem replacement

My ISP sent me a new modem as part of their random troubleshooting of a time of day slowdown. They went from Netgear 7750 to Arris NVG433B. Since then my Asus Vivobook15 has been dropping the wifi connection every 10-20 minutes I usually just turn off and on wifi to reconnect. This also used to happen occasionally on the Netgear router but no where near as often - maybe once or twice a day.

I am thinking it is a driver problem but don't know what driver to use or the current driver can't handle whatever wifi spec the modem is picking.

I found a lot of complaints and questions about the Killer AX1650 but nobody claiming a solution. Running 20.04 updated yesterday.

The bottom lines of dmesg -r after a retart of the wifi shows:

I have changed the beacon interval on the modem from 100ms to 75ms but no change.
