NUT Client and server questions

$

I have been considering installing NUT client and server but as I am not even sure it will do what I want, I had hoped to find some answers here

1 I have an Apple TV 1 running Crystalbuntu2 (based on Ubuntu 12.04) that I want to use as NUT Server as it is always on, and has a fixed IP address on my LAN

I have various computers running versions of Linux including a raspberry Pi

I have multiple UPS devices however only 2 of which have USB ports to tell the system to shut down, hibernate or sleep

I hope to Install USB enabled UPS (probably an older simple 350 Watt TripLite) to Apple TV1 and install NUT server, so that when power goes out on that system it could tell other systems to hibernate, sleep or shut down. I am well aware that the Apple TV 1 will not power off but hope that I can get the software/OS to shut down so that when the UPS battery dies it will have already shut down linux.

My questions are many but begin with:

if this is a typical use of NUT or is it for some higher end hardware?
Is there a UPS compatibility guide for NUT?
Is there an easy how to anywhere?
Is there an issue with installing from repos on ubuntu 14.04 vs 12.04 or Rasbian and have all devices communicating? I mean server 12.04 and client 14.04?

"paths must precede expression: {}" statement

I'm working on a Bash script to move old folders from one NAS to another after ping replies.

The error I'm getting is "paths must precede expression: {}" after the following line...

Code:

#Path to XX.XX  NAS drive, and folder move not file. Moves folder older than 45 days
find ./ -mtime +130 -type d -exec mv -t {}  /run/user/1000/gvfs/smb-share:server=XX.XX.XX.XX,share=video/"_Archived Movies"/ \; {} +

Not sure what the problem is.

PS how do I test run this or try it with actually moving folders?

Thanks

I have just set up Ubuntu as a dual boot with my windows 7 machine and I haven't been able to get it to connect yet. It always just says connecting for about a minute or two and then says you are disconnected. Thanks for the help.

Wireless trouble in Ubuntu! Cant get online!!

Ok, im trying to get online on wifi in my newly installed ubuntu.

There is no wireless network card in my computer, so I'm using a netgear wnda3100 n600 wireless dual band usb adaptor!

This has caused me alot of trouble, that i couldt find any linux based driver for this adaptor!!!

So i found some articles on the internet on how to get this working, and I found some drivers that apparently should be to windows! These was some INF files..

I then installed ndiswrapper with "sudo apt-get install ndiswrapper-common ndiswrapper-dkms;" command, to get these INF files installed..

Then I installed the drivers I've downloaded by using "
sudo ndiswrapper -i bcmn43xx64.inf".

Everything installed properly, but still, when i use "iwconfig", i get this:

Code:

eth0      no wireless extensions.

lo        no wireless extensions.

I really dont know what to do now, please help!!

[UbuntuGnome] I am unable to make alterations to the network (14.04)

I am trying to set up a wireless access point but I can not make any altertions to my existing network. I click on wired network because I am intending to set up the access point via an ethernet connecton. I then press the add symbol and immediately the window closes. What should I post here in the way of logs to find out what is going wrong?

[all variants] Client mounts NFS share, but permission denied when browsing

The server is my laptop, with a fresh install of Xubuntu 14.04.1 right after it was released. Its IP address is 192.168.0.126, assigned by the router via its MAC address. The client is my desktop, Xubuntu 12.04, up to date. Its IP address is 192.168.0.146, similarly assigned by the router.

There are two lines in /etc/exports on the server:

Code:

/media 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0(rw,no_subtree_check,root_squash) 127.0.0.1(no_subtree_check,sync)
#/media *(rw,no_subtree_check,root_squash)

Note that one is currently commented out. I have tried one, then the other, then both, but I get the same results, i.e., the client can mount the share, but when attempting to view the files with Thunar I get "permission denied." From the command line the cd command just hangs. Interestingly, switching to root with sudo su I still cannot view the files. If I launch Thunar as root I still get "permission denied."

The mount command that I use to mount the share is:

Code:

sudo mount.nfs -rw 192.168.0.126:/media /media/jjj/laptop
The showmount command on the client gives me:

Code:

showmount -e 192.168.0.126
Export list for 192.168.0.126:
/media (everyone)

I think the fact that root on the client also cannot view the files is a big clue. Unfortunately, I can't figure out what it means. I need some suggestions.

I have installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my dell laptop Insprion 14R.
I am using ASUS DSL-N10s Wireless N-150 Modem Router.

I am able to connect to internet through wire but i am not able to connect to internet using WIFI.

Network Manager is able to find WIFI SSID but it is not able to connect through it.

I try few solutions already mentioned on forums e.g. installing firmware but i am not able to solve this issue.

Please Help!! Seriously!!!!!!!!!!!!

[Regression] realtek r8192su used to work outofthebox

Hello everyone, I have another realtek wifi chip to throw on the list of failures of this manufacturer. The big deal is that said chip used to work just fine on any distro from 1.5 year ago.
See, I didn't use linux for about a year and after trying some distros again my wifi fails whereas it used to be fine. Yes, I tried slackware, arch, fedora and debian based ones to get stuck at this point. I was thinking of reporting a linux kernel bug, but the kernel itself doesn't seem to be the issue. I have tried using some older kernels on my ubuntu 14.04 install going way back to the 3.9.0. None of this worked.
The actual problem is (like so many others) an extremely slow wifi connection, while signal strength is high. Internet access works but feels like a broken dial-up (things like refreshing packages runs at 300 b/s as an example).
I tried every realtek/wifi related fix on the ubuntu forums, but these always come down to installing another driver and I never found one that was also suitable for mine. That's why I decided to post a new topic because the r8192su hasn't been mentioned before.
However, ndiswrapper works perfectly with this chip. I am still posting this for good measure (thing worked - update - borked) and because ndiswrapper is a rather exotic thing that isn't available in many distributions. You can see it in the script output but I am sure it isn't interfering with the current driver as I unloaded my windows driver and rebooted before running the script. It did however forced me to use a 32 bit installation as ndis fails on 64 bit, but that's off-topic.
Anyway, I am suspecting that it might be some default configuration that breaks it because the kernel didn't make a difference, and looking at the changelog of linux-firmware there hasn't been a change to the r8192su for a long time.

This is the output of the wifi script:

[ubuntu] SNMP deamon fails to start

$

I've got this strange issue with SNMP. This is the first time I ever start the SNMP deamon on Linux and from what I've read - it should be a pretty straight forward procedure. So, I've installed the package and than configured it in /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf where I've only put the community string.
It turned out though that the deamon fails to start.
@NUC-desktop:~$ sudo service snmpd restart
* Restarting network management services:
@NUC-desktop:~$ sudo service snmpd status
* snmpd is not running

When I force the deamon to start, I get an error that it cannot open UDP port 161... but nothing is running on port 161:
@NUC-desktop:~$ sudo /usr/sbin/snmpd -f
Turning on AgentX master support.
Error opening specified endpoint "udp:161"
Server Exiting with code 1

@NUC-desktop:~$ sudo nmap -sU localhost

Starting Nmap 6.40 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2014-09-07 12:36 EEST

Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 3.60 seconds

I saw in some posts that there should be a log file for the snmpd in /var/log/snmpd.log. On my system such a file does not exist, how can I enable logging?

[server] LAN to LAN routing via OpenVPN broken in 14.04 (vs. 12.04)

Hi,

I have a working(!) setup under Ubuntu 12.04.5:

Code:

Internet                          Internet
    |                                  |
192.168.1.* <-> OpenVPN Tunnel <-> 192.168.2.*

OpenVPN-Server: 192.168.1.100
OpenVPN-Client: 192.168.2.30

These two machines act as gateways for their respective nets, also to the internet.

Now, I've setup a new OpenVPN server under 14.04.1 with the same configuration - and suddenly machines behind the 192.168.1-OpenVPN Server cannot be accessed anymore from 192.168.2:

Code:

user@client:~$ ping 192.168.1.100
PING 192.168.1.100 (192.168.1.100) 56(84) bytes of data.

^C
--- 192.168.1.100 ping statistics ---

rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 57.267/117.826/156.152/43.324 ms

client$ user@client:~$ ping 192.168.1.24
PING 192.168.1.24 (192.168.1.24) 56(84) bytes of data.
^C
--- 192.168.1.24 ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 999ms

If I boot the 12.04.5 machine again (with the same OpenVPN config), everything is working again as it's supposed to be.

Code:

user@client:~$ ping 192.168.1.100
PING 192.168.1.100 (192.168.1.100) 56(84) bytes of data.

64 bytes from 192.168.1.100: icmp_req=3 ttl=64 time=57.2 ms
^C
--- 192.168.1.100 ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 received, 0% packet loss, time 2002ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 57.229/81.562/124.492/30.446 ms
user@client:~$ ping 192.168.1.24
PING 192.168.1.24 (192.168.1.24) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 192.168.1.24: icmp_req=1 ttl=63 time=187 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.24: icmp_req=2 ttl=63 time=57.8 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.24: icmp_req=3 ttl=63 time=71.3 ms
^C
--- 192.168.1.24 ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 received, 0% packet loss, time 2003ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 57.819/105.661/187.788/58.336 ms

So I must have missed some piece of configuration on the 14.04.1 machine, or a substantial change from 12.04 to 14.04. But I don't know which.

Will Ubuntu ever include these drivers. I've tried to install them 2 or 3 different ways but still can't get them to run !

[lubuntu] lubuntu acer netbook wireless network not detected after getting new router

$

I got a new router recently, and I think I may have deleted the connection in lubuntu's network preferences. I am not sure if my wireless card is even responding right now (acer netbook with lubuntu on external hd). I know it isn't the router because I have other computers connecting to it. I'm thinking maybe I can 'Add' new connection, maybe fill in some info on the bottom of the router? I wish I could just detect the network and connect...
Any help is much appreciated!

Setting up a wireless connection using WPA2

Hi,

To start off with, I'm really new to using linux so, if possible, be descriptive in your responses. I really want to learn but don't have a big knowledge-base on the subject. I'm sorry if I missed to provide some information that I should have to be able to get decent feedback, I'm really trying ^_^

I'm trying to setup a home server for git/atlassian/DLNA streaming/torrenting/... usage and want to use the Ubuntu 14.04 server.
I've installed the server and am currently trying to connect it to my wireless network, this is the first thing I'm trying and I'm already failing horribly..

The first thing I tried was checking if I could actually find my wireless network:

sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
Code:

wlan0 No scan results
I then tried to configure my networking file and based it on the information I got from my windows laptop wireless configuration (only necessary stuff inclided) :
Code:

  Standaardgateway. . . . . . . . . : fe80::5e35:3bff:fe20:930a%11
                                      192.168.0.1
  DHCP-server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

  DNS-servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 2a02:1800:100::42:2
                                      2a02:1800:100::42:1
                                      195.130.131.130
                                      195.130.130.2
  Zoeklijst voor verbindingsspec. DNS-achtervoegsels :
                                      telenet.be

So I used

sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces to setup the file as:
Code:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet static
address 192.168.1.150
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1 (also tried 192.168.1.1)
wpa-ssid myssid
wpa-psk mypassword
dns-nameservers 195.130.131.130 195.130.130.2 (from the windows config)

Then making the machine use the new settings:
sudo ifdown wlan0 && sudo ifup -v wlan0
I get:
Code:

...
wpa_supplicant: configuring network blaock -- 0
wpa_supplicant:  wpa-ssid "myssid" -- OK
wpa_supplicant: wpa-pask *** -- OK
wpa_supplicant: enabling network block 0 -- OK
ip addr add 192.168.1.150/255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255  dev wlan0 label wlan0

[ubuntu] wifi cuts out after 10-15 minutes, 14.04 lts ThinkPad Edge

Hey guys, wifi will cut out and refuse to reconnect after maye 10-15 minutes from a reboot. Rebooting normally fixes it temporarily. I'm not sure what outputs would be helpful as a starting point so just let me know what you need and I'll grab it.

[SOLVED] Samba on 14.04 ... passwords refused?

$

Upgraded 2 laptops from 12.04 to 14.04. Both are clean, unmodified default installations. No Windows machines on the network at all. Just 2 Ubuntu 14.04 installations.

Never used Samba before, so did plain unadorned vanilla "sudo apt-get..." installation, including config GUI. Set up config according to this online guide. Shares are recognized, show on the screen, and appear to be available. However, password to sign into share is not recognized. The password dialog box just comes up over and over again.

I have no idea of next steps to troubleshoot this. Any help is appreciated very much.

Two VM's behind NAT

I have two VM's running. One server running OpenVPN and the other is Ubuntu. I'd like to test that I can connect to OpenVPN from Ubuntu but both of these VM's are behind NAT which is leaving me confused. I've setup port forwarding rules to both of them so I can SSH but I can't seem to SSH from one VM to the other since they both have the same IP's (at least that's what I'm guessing)

Any help is appreciated!

[ubuntu] Wifi drivers for Thinkpad R60 on 14.04 needed!

Thinkpad R60 can see my wireless networks, but refuses to connect. Continuously asks for Wifi password. Currently using a wired connection, but it's very awkward and inconvenient.
Tried to find drivers, but instructions have either been hopelessly confusing or backwards (disabling network manager before downloading drivers, for instance).
Simple instructions tailored for a n00b please!

Networking with manual IP problem

Hi, I'm running Kubuntu 4.04.1 as an internet/file server on my home lan.
Cable modem: eth1 DHCP
Lan Connection: eth0 (current IP is 10.42.0.1)

I have Samba shares working fine both ways (server <--> pcs) and internet sharing only working on a single pc at the moment. I had to use the sharing option in network config instead of manual IP as I wanted as it was the only way to get internet sharing to work BUT linux determines the static ip (above) and my system requires the ip range to be in the standard 192.168.0.x range.

My question, how do I change (or edit) the current static ip on the linux box to the ip I need without losing the internet sharing?
