I am using Asus USB-N13 wifi adapter. Ubuntu recognizes it and allows me to connect to my wifi. I can surf the web for about 5 minutes or so and then i lose internet connection, but Ubuntu still shows I am connected to the Wifi with a strong signal. I have to unplug and plug back in the adapter to get back online, all for about another 5 minutes or so before it happens again. I have been all over the web trying to find an answer to this problem. Please help. Thanks.

[ubuntu] Can't connect to internal server and router
I've got a strange problem, and need help in troubleshooting.
My internal network consists of a couple of PC's with dual boot Ubuntu/Windows, a network printer and a router which also works as a DHCP server.
One of the PC's is showing a bit strange behaviour.
Any hints what could be the cause of the problem?
My internal network consists of a couple of PC's with dual boot Ubuntu/Windows, a network printer and a router which also works as a DHCP server.
One of the PC's is showing a bit strange behaviour.
- Connection to internet without any problems, I can open webpages in my browser, read e-mails and so on
- Running Ubuntu, and trying to open the configuration page of the router is not working (timeout)
- The same applies when trying to open the network printer configuration page (nothing happens, timeout)
- I can ping both the router and the network printer from this PC
- Doing the same operations from other PC's works without any problems
- It also works when running Windows on that particular PC
- I've compared the routing tables between this PC and another one, and they seem to be identical
Any hints what could be the cause of the problem?

[ubuntu] No internet connection (cable unplugged)
Hello, yesterday I decided to install fresh version of Ubuntu 14.04 (I was using Windows 7 before). Everything was fine until i tried to connect to the internet. Ethernet cable is plugged in (worked in windows 7) and orange led is blinking. I read on forums that the problem was my ethernet controller driver; I'm using
Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 02)
Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd Motherboard
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 44
I/O ports at c000 [size=256]
Memory at e8010000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=4K]
Memory at e8000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=64K]
[virtual] Expansion ROM at e7000000 [disabled] [size=64K]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: r8168
Kernel driver at fresh install was r8169. I have already done everything i found on forums about this topic. I downloaded r8168 driver from realtek webpage, installed it, blacklisted r8169 driver etc. However, in the network settings, there is still "cable unplugged" message. Please help.

How does a NIC know when to wake up a PC/Ubuntu?
I would like to find out how I can query a network cards properties/capabilities.
The reason why is, that I would like to find out how a NIC wakes up a computer. No, I don't want to know about Wake-on Lan with a magic packet. For instance, I have a Synology NAS and it goes to sleep. When I turn on a PC or a TV it wakes up and is ready to serve. How does it do that? I had found the answer to my question of property query of the NIC, lost it and can't find it anymore. I have never found an answer as to how the NIC does it. I would like to set up a server, one of the obstacles is waking it up from sleep.

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, Intel N-7260 not connecting to home wifi
Hi all,
Sorry to bother you, but I've been spending hours trying to fix this, and it seems I won't be able to do this on my own so...
I'm using Ubuntu 14.04LTS (updating to a non LTS is sadly not an option) on my CLEVO laptop, with an Intel N-7260 wifi device. It usually works well, though I sometimes have to turn wifi off and on again to connect to some networks.
But today, I tried everything I could without any luck. My laptop won't connect to my home wifi ("Freebox-5ECBD0"), while both my desktop computer (running windows 7) and my smartphone (Android 4.1) connected without a hiccup...
This happened to me last year, roughly same time of the year, and I remember spending more than a week, trying everything I found to make it work (and somehow it worked at one point, though I can't tell what fixed it). I'm telling this in case you find anything strange/non-default in the attached wireless-info file (and if that might be the cause of today's problem, please tell me how to "get back" to default...)
Thanks again for your time and kind help.
[Edit]: after founding this article https://erickranich.wordpress.com/20...0-sous-ubuntu/ , I tried
sudo /sbin/iwconfig wlan0 power off
and tried connecting again... and it worked! I don't know how long it'll work nor exactly what I did though, so any explanation/help is still welcome! [/Edit]

[ubuntu] Unexplained wireless speed/reception drop
Hi,
I have recently been having problems with wireless internet on my laptop (Toshiba Satellite with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS; wireless card is QCA9565 / AR9565 Wireless Network Adapter). It used to have great reception but now it has either 1 bar or none at all when more than 2 metres from the modem. It has just become really slow with no explanation! Other laptops/PC's/tablets work fine in the same places. The laptop is dual boot and in the Windows partition (Windows 8.1) it seems to work slightly better, but only just.
I have tried looking up other threads on this topic but they seem to have just confused me further.
Thanks :)

[ubuntu] L2tp with psk not supported :(
For my work I would like to have vpn l2tp with psk connection as a client.
It is impossible to configure it with network manager.
There was some solution in a past:
https://launchpad.net/~seriy-pr/+arc...k-manager-l2tp
I contacted author (Sergey Prokhorov) and he answered me that he ended to work on it because he need it not for everyday purpose ;).
I tried Fedora22 and there is also l2tp with psk via network manager not working.
Thank you for any advice what to do to get L2tp with PSK to work.

Cannot Get DHCP With University Wifi
Hello,
I have been trying for sometime to run Ubuntu on a Lenovo ideapad and have been unsuccessful with setting up the wifi.
I have tried both using the internal wireless card (which I suspect is not compatible with the university network as it does not work in windows either) and using a realtek RTL8188.
The computer will connect to my home router just fine, but not the the university wifi. If I scan for networks though I can see the university wifi both through the internal card and the realtech. The university wifi has no security. Any suggestions?

[all variants] I need to buy a new wi-fi router, suggestions please
Firstly I hope that this post is in the correct place, feel free to move it if it is not.
I have an elderly Edimax wi-fi router and it is very slow transferring files on my home network. I only just found this out as I've just set up a Raspberry Pi2 as a media centre with Openelec and Kodi. File transfer is at about 200kB/sec :(
From my research I would like something running DD-WRT but it has to have wi-fi because I do not have the space for two boxes. I have looked at Buffalo products but would like some advice.
I probably don't need the top of the range, this is just a home network and I'm the only one using it.
I don't need super strength wi-fi, I'm only 10 ft. from the router. My walls are made of stone and are 2 ft. or more thick, there is no possibility of the signal going outside of this room. OK you got me, I live in a dungeon :)
My main concern is for security rather than the ability for it to do all sorts of tricks.
All suggestions are most welcome.
Other Info:
My ISP did not supply the router, I bought it.
I'm on an ADSL connection 8128kbps down, 448kbps up, through the telephone socket.

Launch x11vnc through SSH with lightdm
I'm running a Kodibuntu server, and I sometimes want to connect with VNC.
For security, I tunnel x11vnc through SSH, like this:
Then on my laptop, I connect to localhost with RealVNC Viewer. This works fine in the Kodi UI, but I need to access the login screen to start a normal desktop environment to use a web browser, etc. At the login screen, x11vnc fails to start because it can't find an X display. So I add the following line to .x11vncrc:
Now it works when I run x11vnc as root. But I can't use sudo over SSH, and it seems like a bad idea for security too. What can I do?
For security, I tunnel x11vnc through SSH, like this:
Code:
ssh -L 5900:localhost:5900 hostname 'x11vnc'
Code:
auth /var/run/lightdm/root/:0

RDP assistance
Hello everyone,
I have been having another problem with RDP. Concering the VPN, I am installing teamviewer and using this until I can figure out a method for VPN between my two computers.
Now, I have multiple ubuntu machines in my work. All of which are connected to each other via network switch (they all have multiple nics. One is for the switch, the other is for the internet).
I successfully setup the ip addresses for the switch because I am able to ping all of them from each computer. For this issue, I am only going to be focusing on two.
I have two ubuntu computers computer A is attempting to rdp to computer B. Using vino-preferences, I have setup computer B to allow remote desktop with a password. I have installed xrdp and vnc4server (trying different methods). On computer A, I am running remmina. WIth remmina, I am able to connect to computer B via rdp protocol. I know that this is a sercuity concern and that I should do SSH tunneling; however, they are all on the same switch and thus, I figured it was unneccessary.
I come to the login screen and I see the different options such as sesman-any, rdp-any, and sesman-VNC, and etc. However, I am unable to control the desktop with any of them. The application will "connect" and hang at a black screen, display a successful connection and crash, or will hang at TCP connected.
I have been editting the xrdp.ini on computer B for hours and I am unable to determine come up with a solution. Any help will be much appreciated!

Strange connection issue!
Hi all,
I'm new to Ubuntu and I'm having some issues connecting to the wifi. It's a weird problem because I can connect to the ethernet or wifi at school, but I cannot connect to either at any other location. I guess this probably means it's a laptop issue or some setting somewhere that I can't find. Does anyone have any suggestions? Help would be much appreciated!

How to change name of Wlan interface?
Hello,
Probably an easy fix but I haven't been able to find it. All my systems call their wireless interface wlan0 EXCEPT for one which calls it wlan2. Where is that interface name defined? It messes with my CDO to have one system different from the others for no particular reason.
Thanks, Jon

Disabling certain wi-fi channels
I want to setup multiple wireless routers to use the same access point. Unfortunately, some of the routers I have give me trouble w/a couple of Ubuntu installations. These problems would be acceptable if I could just prevent the Ubuntu client systems from using the channels that the problem routers use. But I don't know how to do that.

Networking in Ubuntu Vagrant box
Hey there,
I am currently trying to set up an Ubuntu 14.04 Vagrant box using Virtual Box 4.3.28 that receives VRPN coordinates[1] from an outside server running Windows 7. The box's network is bridged to the host's network card that has both the host and the external server. The box can be ping the server, but the server can not ping the box. The box does not receive any data via VRPN. The host system can ping the guest and guest can ping the host. The box receives data via VRPN from a sample VRPN server on the host. I was able to ping the host and a Windows 8 guest VM from the external server.
The Vagrant file looks like this:
Any ideas? Please find my network info file attached (generated with wireless-info).

Max
