Ubuntu 12.04.5 64b WiFi problem

$

Hello
First of all thank you for this great OS that is -> Ubuntu :)
Then please excuse me if this issue has been already solved - it's my fault that didn't know about it - just show me the link and that's it :)

If not (if the problem is new) please have a look:

I have an HP 650 laptop (brought 2 years ago) which it already came with Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS 64b installed on it.
After sometime I start having problem with my WiFi connection: every time I do updates on my Ubuntu and the it asked me to restart my WiFi doesn't work at all -> it's like being disabled (the light is green from my F12 key - as the WiFi is OK - but I don't see any WiFi connections).
Here is my wireless controller (lspci | grep Network):
02:00.0 Network controller: Ralink corp. RT3290 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe
So after updates and restart I have to do the steps (described in this link - see that)

http://rricketts.com/installing-rali...-ubuntu-12-04/

and after another restart I see WiFi connections - and can connect to the one that it's mine and everything is fine.

OK. About 2 months ago I brought another laptop (ASUS ROG G751JM-T7043D, i7 3.5GHz, 17.3"FullHD,16GB,256GB SSD, nVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB GDDR5) which came with Free Dos, and so having already some experience with Ubuntu - I said why not, let's put Ubuntu on it: so I had installed Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS on 64b.
I do updates every time it asks me to. So this is it -> after all the updates and restarts (the Asus laptop with Ubuntu - actually which it has the same version as the one from my HP) the new laptop doesn't have ANY problems with the WiFi. None! Everything is OK after updates and restarts - all the WiFi connections are there - without doing anything!

So I want to know what did I do wrong?
Why when I work with the same Ubuntu version (12.04.5 LTS on 64b), on HP I have to do some workaround to get WiFi connection and on Asus everything is normal?!

Thanks! ;)

[SOLVED] Wifi doesn't work (no wlan0 after installation)

Hello,
Network Manager shows no wireless options. It's old Asus laptop, eth0 works without problems. Before installing Lubuntu 14.04 I tried to install Xubuntu 14.04 twice and the installation stopped and was hanging at the same point: "configuring bcmwl-kernel-source". The Lubuntu installation was without problems and I see the package installed. I've already installed firmware-b43-installer but it doesn't help.
Please, ask for any files/commands you'd like to see.

[ubuntu] Need To Network R31 Thinkpad Via RealTek Wifi Dongle

Greetings and a plea!

Please pardon length of this post but I desperately need to set-up a flea market steal of a Precise Pangolin Thinkpad R31 as an emergency backup due home theft of my R60e and many other personal items. Too many non-Ubuntu users claim this machine is too old to Wifi though it runs Pangoiln just fine. I can't simply can't afford to spend past wallet change on any computer related items at this time and the ethernet route isn't functional. A Mac Maven found me a "free" USB wifi dongle by RealTek I believe and also dropped off a file ( rtl8187_linux_26.1025.0328.2007 ) of drivers and the READ-ME which I simply can't make heads or tails of. Ruefully I'm no techie nor have the time now to grasp these concepts. Is there any short-cut or easier way to install this dongel or get my R31 online?

Thanks for any assist!!!

RealTek RTL8187 Wireless LAN driver for
Fedora Core 2/3/4/5, Debian 3.1, Mandrake 10.2/Mandriva 2006,
SUSE 9.3/10.1/10.2, Gentoo 3.1, etc.
- Support Client mode for either infrastructure or adhoc mode
- Support WEP and WPAPSK connection

< Component >
The driver is composed of several parts:
1. Module source code
stack.tar.gz
drv.tar.gz

2. Script ot build the modules
makedrv

3. Script to load/unload modules
wlan0up
wlan0down

4. Script and configuration for DHCP
wlan0dhcp
ifcfg-wlan0
4. Supplicant source code:
wpa_supplicant-0.4.9.tar.gz

5. Example of supplicant configuration file:
wpa1.conf

< Installation >
Runing the scripts can finish all operations of building up modules
from the source code and start the nic.
1. Build up the drivers from the source code
./makedrv

2. load the driver module to kernel and start up nic
./wlan0up

< Set wireless lan MIBs >
This driver uses Wireless Extension as an interface allowing you to set
Wireless LAN specific parameters.

Current driver supports "iwlist" to show the device status of nic
iwlist wlan0 [parameters]
where
parameter explaination [parameters]
----------------------- -------------
Show available chan and freq freq / channel
Show and Scan BSS and IBSS scan[ning]
Show supported bit-rate rate / bit[rate]
Show Power Management mode power

For example:
iwlist wlan0 channel
iwlist wlan0 scan
iwlist wlan0 rate
iwlist wlan0 power

Driver also supports "iwconfig", manipulate driver private ioctls, to set
MIBs.

iwconfig wlan0 [parameters] [val]
where
parameter explaination [parameters] [val] constraints
----------------------- ------------- ------------------
Connect to AP by address ap [mac_addr]
Set the essid, join (I)BSS essid [essid]
Set operation mode mode {Managed|Ad-hoc}
Set keys and security mode key/enc[ryption] {N|open|restricted|off}

For example:
iwconfig wlan0 ap XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
iwconfig wlan0 essid "ap_name"
iwconfig wlan0 mode Ad-hoc
iwconfig wlan0 mode essid "name" mode Ad-hoc
iwconfig wlan0 key 0123456789 [2] open
iwconfig wlan0 key off
iwconfig wlan0 key restricted [3] 0123456789

< Getting IP address >
After start up the nic, the network needs to obtain an IP address before
transmit/receive data.
This can be done by setting the static IP via "ifconfig wlan0 IP_ADDRESS"
command, or using DHCP.

If using DHCP, setting steps is as below:
(1)connect to an AP via "iwconfig" settings
iwconfig wlan0 essid [name] or
iwconfig wlan0 ap XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX

(2)run the script which run the dhclient
./wlan0dhcp
or
dhcpcd wlan0
(Some network admins require that you use the
hostname and domainname provided by the DHCP server.
In that case, use
dhcpcd -HD wlan0)

< WPAPSK >
WPA_SUPPLICANT help the network to communicate under the protection of WPAPSK
mechanism

(1)Unpack source code of WPA supplicant:
tar -zxvf wpa_supplicant-0.4.9.tar.gz
cd wpa_supplicant-0.4.9

(2)Create .config file:
cp defconfig .config

(3)Edit .config file, uncomment the following line:
#CONFIG_DRIVER_IPW=y.

(4)Build WPA supplicant:
make
If make error for lack of <include/md5.h>, install the openssl lib(two ways):
1. Install the openssl lib from corresponding installation disc:
Fedora Core 2/3/4/5(openssl-0.9.71x-xx), Mandrake10.2/Mandriva10.2(openssl-0.9.7x-xmdk),
Debian 3.1(libssl-dev), Suse 9.3/10.0/10.1(openssl_devl), Gentoo(dev-libs/openssl), etc.
2. Download the openssl open source package from www.openssl.org, build and install it.

(5)Edit wpa_supplicant.conf to set up SSID and its passphrase.
For example, the following setting in "wpa1.conf" means SSID
to join is "BufAG54_Ch6" and its passphrase is "87654321".
network={
ssid="BufAG54_Ch6"
proto=WPA
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
pairwise=CCMP TKIP
group=CCMP TKIP WEP104 WEP40
psk="87654321"
priority=2
}

(6)Execute WPA supplicant (Assume 8187 and related modules had been
loaded):
./wpa_supplicant -D ipw -c wpa1.conf -i wlan0 &

[all variants] Network connections keeps getting dropped since 15.04

Since upgrading to 15.04 my network connection keeps getting dropped. First the wifi connection gets dropped, so I plug in the ethernet cable. After a while the ethernet connection gets dropped, so I unplug it and the wifi works for a while longer until it gets dropped again. And so on and so on. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Do I need a full-fledged WAN router to run a home

Hello

I want to set-up a home web server. It won't be an issue to get a static IP and to run a server (spoke about that with my ISP already).
The difficult part is the hardware. My budget is tight and I don't feel like investing money into buying an additional hardware, unless I absolutely have to. What I have right now is a DSL modem that has SOME (keyword SOME!) router capabilities. It's basically 3 in 1. It's a DSL modem, a Wi-FI AP and Ethernet switch. I don't need it as a modem, since I don't have DSL here (the device is from another apartment and even country -- long story and not relevant). Right now I use it as a switch and AP. I really do NOT need this nice device to get online, it's just it's more convenient to get rid of wires on the floor. Some fools think that I have a Wi-Fi Internet at home or DSL. AGAIN -- it's NEITHER. It's a RJ-45 Ethernet PPPoE connection to the ISP.
P.S. Frankly, it's not even a money issue -- I'm afraid to buy Chinese crap that produces a high-pitched noise (kinda zzzzzzzzzzzzzz!) while working and I can hear it and it drives me crazy (already returned couple of devices to the store).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I could at least get the adapter working again, that would be a start, but ideally I'd like my built-in wifi working.

I am new to Ubuntu so this is my experiment :p I have a mostly mac household. I have an unraid server that i have been accessing via my main computer. I would like to access it from my Ubuntu system as well. However when i try to connect i get an error.

Unhandled error message: Could not connect to 192.168.0.25: No route to host

I have not idea what i need to do. I can get to the Western Digital Worldbook on the network with no issue. I can the other mac that has shared resources.
I need some ideas as to what i need to do.

Thanks!

[SOLVED] Problem about cannot log onto the Internet, when install xubuntu.

Hello everyone!
I just installed Xubuntu 15.04 on my computer and I cannot log onto the Internet.
During installation the up and down arrows in the upper left of the screen showed that my computer was connected to the Internet.
It was via ethernet. Once Xubuntu 15.04 had installed, the up and down arrows became faint in color and I wasn't able to connect to the Internet.
I would like to be able to connect via ethernet and also via my Broadcom Corp.
BCM4401-B00 wireless LAN. What steps do I need to take to get my computer online? It's a Dell Vostro 1500.

I know nothing about computer programming and I am not accustomed to using command prompts, so I am hoping that someone can provide me with a simplified explanation.

Thank's a lot!

Mounting remote folders

I'm not sure where I am going wrong here but I suspect a schoolboy error of some type.

I have an Ubuntu server setup and on this server I have managed to mount my WD hard drives using fstab without any problem at all. What I am trying to do is mount one of the drives onto my desktop using the following line in fstab;

//192.168.0.28/mnt/Drive3/Music /media/Music ext4 defaults 0 0

when I try and mount it using sudo mount -a I get the error "mount: special device //192.168.0.28/mnt/Drive3/Music does not exist"

I know its there because I can access it through Files - Browse Network.

I'm obviously being a camel but I don't have a clue why.

Could any of you nice people help me out and enlighten me.

Network Manager working, but no Wireless in Menu

Hey! First time on the forums!
I'm using Ubuntu 15.04, on an absolutely fresh installation. It's installed to a 500 GB external usb hard drive. In the panel, the network manager icon appears, with options for VPN and wired connection, but nothing related to wireless connection. I was able to connect using the liveusb I used for the installation, on the same computer, and with the same wireless network I was attempting to connect to on the external hdd. I know what I am doing as far as installing linux on my hdd, and I can't understand what I could've done wrong. I successfully connected to this network on this computer with this hdd using Opensuse, Manjaro, Antergos, Arch, and all previous versions of Ubuntu from 12.04 to present. Vivid Vervet is proving problematic thus far.
Here is the output of "lspci | grep Network":

00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82566MM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03)
10:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61)

Also, if you recommend packages I need to install, please be sure you know what you're talking about, as I have to boot into the liveusb to download the .debs and then reboot into the hdd with each attempt. Thank you for your help.

[UbuntuGnome] Random mobile device showing up in status field

Hi,

For a couple of days a random mobile device ("Leos's galaxy") has been showing up in my status field.
First of all, this is not mu device and I have never been connected to this. It annoys me that I am not
able to remove it. I only get two possibilities when clicking it:

- Use as Internet connection
- Preferences for mobile broadband

Trying to connect does not work, as the device is not up (or in the vicinity) and clicking the preferences just leads to the normal networking preferences panel. I do not have any mobile broadband hardware on my computer.

Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this?

Thanks a lot

Lenovo Yoga 3 - 14" - Atheros QCA61x4

Hi,

I recently bought a Lenovo Yoga 3 14". I'm a programmer and want to dual boot my laptop with Ubuntu, however, I'm having issues with my wifi/wireless within Ubuntu. My laptop has an Qualcomm Atheros QCA61x4 network adapter and, so far, all my searches online have cropped up with very few results (most of which are either unanswered queries similar to mine or just solutions that don't work).

I was wondering if anyone here has managed to get their wifi to work with the same laptop, or knows how I should go about doing this? Ethernet/USB wireless/changing network adapter are not options I want to explore at the moment.

Thanks

I am trying for Bluetooth on my Laptop.

As per this question on askubuntu I installed rtl8723au_bt module but it did not work.

Meanwhile Pilot6 posted a new ppa today. I added the ppa and installed rtl8723au-bt-dkms linux-firmware.

The result is my Android Phone can see the Ubuntu Laptop in Bluetooth but fails to pair.

The scan on Ubuntu Laptop times out:
Code:

$ hcitool scan

[SOLVED] Wifi not working on Inspiron E1505, new install of Lubuntu 12.04

This Inspiron was previously running XP. I upgraded the RAM and swapped the HDD for a SSD to boost its responsiveness and decided to go with Lubuntu 12.04, because it's 32-bit (unless I am mistaken), as is this computer. I just want this computer as basically a web browser

Here is what I have tried so far (with Ethernet cable connected):

1) sudo apt-get update
which completed without problem.

2) lspci -nn -d 14e4:
to find the wireless controller. which was 14e4:4311

3) So I installed
firmware-b43-installer
and it seemed to complete.

4) Went into Network Connections and have set up the Wireless network with the proper SSID, Mode set to Infrastructure, MTU to automatic and the other fields blank.
IPv4 and v6 have Automatic (DHCP)
Wireless Security set to WPA and 2 Personal, with the right password.

5) Rebooted.

6) The computer gives no indication that it recognises I have a wireless network. When I unplug the Ethernet cable, the wifi symbol in the system tray says "No network devices available".

Thank you so much for any assistance you can render.

[ubuntu] 12.04 has stopped working with Sony Xperia as wireless/tethered access point

I've been using 12.04 for ages, accessing internet via my Sony Xperia phone (both wifi and usb tethered). Today, 12.04 won't access internet via the phone. It hangs for ages, saying it's resolving the site name, then finally says the site is unavailable.

I don't think it's the phone, as I can still access the internet via the phone on my Windows 8.1-running laptop, and also using a live usb with 15.04 on it (the computer with 12.04 installed on it). I thought maybe it was a kernel update problem (I had to update a stack of stuff yesterday), but still have the problem using older kernels.

In System Settings > Network > Wireless it claims that the wireless is connected, speed 65 Mb/s.

The problem is with Firefox and Chromium, so I don't think it's a browser issue. A strange thing is: when I first make the wifi/wired connection and open the browser, I am able to login to LastPass, which I would have thought should be impossible as it isn't letting me browse. After a minute or so the connection to LastPass is lost.

I don't know how to possibly suss out the cause of the problem, or fix it. Any suggestions welcome.

Cheers.

I am fairly new to Ubuntu and I am having a problem with my wireless USB stick and installing its driver

Parameters:
  • I have Ubuntu 14.04.1
  • The wireless stick is a Net DYN and can be found: http://www.amazon.com/Adapter-NET-DY.../dp/B00LWE14TO
  • My laptop has no other means to connect to internet(no Ethernet cord)
  • I have the initial install cd for the wireless stick, but when I open up the Linux folder, There is no run file, just a bunch of .c files
  • my laptop is a dell Inspiron 15, 3000 series

Therefore, how do I install the driver? Thank you for your time and patience.
