[ubuntu] Advice Requested - Adding Wireless to a wired network

$
0
0
Hello Everyone,

I could use some advice - I have DSL coming in to a wired network - typical 5 port router. I would like to add wireless capability, but it is not something that would be in use at all times. Mainly just for use with smart-phone, and perhaps a laptop in the future. Switching to wireless for everything is not an option. I would just like to add the capability for use now and again.

I have read a little about portable wireless for travellers, but I'm really not sure if that is the best option.

Please let me know if you have a similar set-up, and offer suggestions as you see fit.

Thanks in advance!

I had this problem one week ago and i couldnt solve it,
so i reinstalled ubuntu 16.04 being wired connected to be sure that it was fully updated,
once installed i removed the ethernet cable and the wireless connection worked,
since then i was happy, i started by installing some apps that i need to work and customizing folders, colors, etc by downloading some files from internet,
Until this morning, i turned on my laptop and the problem came back

Browser that i have
Firefox - Server not found
Ubuntu browser - Server not found

Note:
Windows-Ubuntu dual boot
Wireless connection in Windows working properly

Files i installed after being wireless connected - before i lost my connection again:
Scilab
Unity tweak tools
change folder color
geogebra
Vlc player
nemo file manager

Why does this issue happen?

Hi
I have some issues too, my 2,4GHz works just fine, and I can see both my 5GHz bands but they won't accept the password. So I can't connect to them.

Not sure if it has anything to do with the diffrence in 5GHz bands between Sweden and Kvalos firmware.
Anyway here is my wireless scrip

[ubuntu] Remote connect from home to office Ubuntu server - best tool

$

At present, I am using SSH to connect to an Ubuntu server but from within the network, ie same router. I would like to be able to connect to the same server from home. The server has no gui, so I would just be connecting to the terminal. Is "ssh" the best tool or is there something better? If ssh, how do I connect to and get through the router?

OpenVPN stops all traffic on Ethernet after ~60minutes

Good morning, I'm hoping someone can help me with solving a very frustrating issue.

After having my internet connection snooped on more than one occasion, I have started using a VPN to encrypt my traffic. However, after approx 60 minutes, all my traffic will stop abruptly. I have spent the last 5 hours trawling the internet to find a solution but nil joy.

My setup is as follows:
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
ASRock mini-itx motherboard with Ethernet built in
Linksys wrt1900ac
The computer is connected to the router via a 1gigabit cable.

I have installed the OpenVPN packages and are managing my settings via the gnome network manager.

The VPN connects fine and will work as per normal (including an IP check) until approx 60 minutes, then all traffic stops. The only way to get traffic working again is to either disconnect the VPN (not desirable) or restart the machine (where my frustration lies as I am in the middle of working).

Self fix #1 - Initial searches indicated it might have been a DNS issue from my ISP, that it was blocking access because I was using a VPN. I changed my DNS to the DNS.watch no logging servers on both the network connection and VPN, rebooted, but this did not fix the issue.

Self fix #2 - Another search indicated it may have been a firewall issue, so I ran the remove command for both firestarter and ufw, rebooted, but this did not fix the issue either.

Self fix #3 - I tried the option "apply to traffic on this network only" but that results in everything bypassing the VPN.

I can't see how it's the VPN though, as I tested it on my Android phone and it does not drop out or stall at all. I can't see it being the router either as all my other devices are working fine.

The only skerrick of an idea of where to head next is the IP tables, but I would have no idea where to start, and I'm at my wit's end already.

Advice please? Thanks in advance.

[kubuntu] cannot make settings in connection editor stick

Just installed 16.04 into a zotac nano and am having trouble with the connection editor. Install went great, no trouble. Now that that is done, I need to make the Eth0 IP address a static and make the unit be a server. The connection editor won't behave. Everytime I try, it pops up a message about it failing and won't connect again. It won't even behave when I try to set it back to auto. Had to go through every setting and click remove multiple times. Also, the ethernet port wants to glom-on to the windows box on the network switch and pretend it's gateway is 169.254.0.0. Even when I turn off the windowsbox this computer still wants to pick that address. It's only after I turn off the windowsbox and bootup twice does it start connecting.

There is something very wrong with the connection editor or the network manager with 16.04. This is the 3rd computer I've tried it on, all 3 have problems with manual settings.

[ubuntu] Wifi and Ethernet don't work properly

$

I recently was trying to create a WiFi hotspot using a wired connection and used a third party package to do it. Somehow it backfired and my WiFi and Ethernet stopped working properly. For a time, there was a constant "Network Service Discovery Disabled" messaged, but that doesn't appear anymore.
I removed the network manager using purge and reinstalled using live CD but it's still the same.
The networking icon isn't showing and System Settings>Network doesn't open either.
Moreover, it's still connected to my WiFi and every page loads after about 10 reloads (except YouTube).

Is there anyway to fix it or should I just do a clean install?

[kubuntu] Cannot edit wireless network settings

I'm at a friend's house trying to connect to their wireless network. I click on the Network Manager icon in the bottom panel (KDE here), find the router's SSID, enter the password for it and click connect. Apparently the password was incorrect but now I can't change it. I try to type it in fresh and click connect but it fails so quickly that I don't think it's even trying.

Next, I click to the wrench icon to edit the connection. On the wireless security tab, the password is there. I tried to change it but I can't. I can type in a new password but the "OK" button is greyed out. Why is this?

I rebooted the computer and have the same problem.

[SOLVED] 16.04 64bit server. Can't set static address. Who ordered enp3so?

Hi All,

I decided to set up a Plex media server and as a first step sorted out a decent machine. Installed a newly downloaded version as shown above. Install flew in no problem. Set up root passwd. Then I wanted to set a static ip address. So edit /etc/network/interfaces. No eth0. Why wasn't I told about this. Tried to bluff my way to success by old way of setting static address but no good, update call gave me a load of errors but no update. I guess there is a new way of doing something that I didn't catch.
I can't find an answer on the net and I can't find an answer to an enquiry 'enp3so' in the forums.

Guidance on where we are now with this new (since my last server install of 14.04) way of doing things will be hugely appreciated.

best regards,

brawd.

OK found a couple of references on Youtube. I must say that they are all different to what I'm getting on my screen with my installation so obviously things are much too volatile for me to be successful with 16.04. In view of my weaknesses I'm going to mark this as solved though it isn't.

brawd.

[lubuntu] Lubuntu 16.04 on Acer Aspire One AOA 110-Ap netbook - atheros wifi fails on cold boot

$

The Atheros AR2425 wifi on this old netbook has always been very reliable with all previous versions of lubuntu, but after upgrading to lubuntu 16.04, it has a strange problem. On turning on the netbook from cold, the wifi never works - it is unable to see any network. Asking it to ping my router just gets a response of 'Network is unreachable'.

Rebooting (usually just once, but 2 or 3 times on rare occasions) gets the wifi working, and once this is acheived it is rock solid - no wifi problems until the next time it is turned on from cold.

I briefly considered whether this might be an intermittent problem indicative of an impending hardware failure - but I think not - its behaviour is very consistent, and a friend with the exact same model of netbook is experiencing exactly the same problem.

I downloaded and ran the wireless-info script - once after a reboot with the wifi working, and the following day after a cold boot, with the wifi not yet working. I then ran diff --suppress-common-lines on the two resultant wireless-info.txt files. The diff gave a large amount of output which I have looked through, but I'm afraid I don't know enough to recognise where the problem lies, and I would be grateful for advice on what it reveals.

I am uploading three files with this message - all compressed due to the file size limit of the forum: the output of the wireless-info script after a cold boot, and after a warm boot, and the output of running diff against these two output files.

Thanks in anticipation
Alan

[ubuntu] Authentication is required to start rpc-statd.service

I use my laptop as my NFS server and my desktop as an NFS client. I recently upgraded the desktop to Ubuntu 16.04 (it was on Ubuntu 14.04 before). The laptop/server is on Ubuntu 14.04, and I didn't' change anything on it. For some reason, after the upgrade, I had to comment out the only active line in /etc/hosts.deny on the laptop/server to get my NFS share to mount:
Quote:

rpcbind mountd nfsd statd lockd rquotad : ALL
/etc/hosts.allow contains references to all the network adapters on my desktop.

After doing that, I'm able to mount the NFS share on the laptop/server on my desktop, but strangely, I'm prompted to authenticate with this message:
Quote:

Authentication is required to start rpc-statd.service.
I enter the root password for the desktop (OK, to be honest I think it's the root password for the desktop, but the root password is the same on both computers) and my NFS share mounts.

I'd love to be able to fix both these problems, especially the problem with having to authenticate to get my NFS share to mount. Does anyone have any ideas?

Update:

The output for 'll /sbin/rpc.statd' on the client/desktop is:
Quote:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 77728 Apr 6 09:18 /sbin/rpc.statd*
On the laptop/server:
Quote:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 77728 Apr 6 09:18 /sbin/rpc.statd*
No difference that I can see, except for the date, and rights seem correct so that world should be able to access rpc.statd.

How to make a connection by L2TP protocol under Ubuntu 16?

Xubuntu 15.10 - Mobile Broadband gets connected, but no Internet Access

$

Since I've upgraded to xubuntu 15.10, I'm facing this issue, it wasn't there upto 14.04 LTS. For my Airtel Data Card (Huawei E1731), I created a new connection from the New Mobile Broadband connection menu of NetworkManager. However, when I click on it, connection is established, but I'm unable to browse the internet. Firefox shows the offline page and when I do ping google.com, it just times out.

However, sometimes when I do different things like disconnect and reconnect, restart the network-manager service, etc., I'm able to browse the internet again. This is the same issue which was faced by this other user which somehow got resolved as his menu is showing Auto Ethernet instead of New Mobile Broadband connection after some experimentation. But I couldn't replicate the same fix and seeking a permanent fix for this problem. I don't want to upgrade to 16.04 just to solve this issue as there is no guarantee that it will be fixed there. Please help.

[ubuntu] Is there a USB 3.0 to Gigabit that works on Ubuntu server?

$

I have now 3 type USB Gigabit adapters. They just don't work good on Ubuntu server. I have to use a old Linksys USB300M 10/100 and it works good only it's not a 1000 gigabit one. I did get a Linksys all most just like it only Gigabit USB3GIGV1 but just don't work good with Ubuntu server. Now I have a USB 3.1 with power and Gigabit. Type-C to Hub says Linux support too. But it keeps going off and on saying 10 or 100 or a 1000 and full or half but just will not stay on the 1000 full!

Running "Ubuntu 16.04 LTS" as a server on one of the new Intel Compute sticks with USB 3.1 on it. Kernel Version 4.4.0-22-generic (SMP) x86_64

So I need some USB 3.1 with Gigabit and power and be nice to have at lest 2 USB 3.0 ports on it too.

When I do a "dhclient" command on it. It takes a long time like a minute to come back and does not get a IP.

Maybe I need some driver? I think it's a real tech chip set.

Here is a little info of it, from this command: lshw -C network

*-network:1

I open it up and seen on the small Ethernet chip this number RTL8153 and looked it up and found a driver:

LINUX driver for kernel 3.x 2.06.0 2016/2/23 32k Global but it just downloads a file name "0004-r8152.53-2.06.0" doing a nano on it, the file starts like this:

Quote:

# Samsung

So how would I install that?

Or any one know what one works with Ubuntu 16.04 real good?

When I am new to linux, and Ubuntu. I love it!. I just have one issue. I purchased an Edimax EW7711ULC, downloaded the linux drivers from Edimax and I tried to make the drivers but run into a __DATE__ error. So I download the mt7620U drivers form MediaTek, and i tried to make the drivers but run into __DATE__ error. After googling for what seemed months i found chenhai github for the driver and sanrath bitBucket for the driver, they both make and install fine. I can see the wireless device in me network list but it says not manged or disconnected. In terminal I typed ifconfig, and iwconfig and got this:

I have a problem with my WiFi connection. I can not seem to connect to any WiFi network regardless of the security.

I've tried connecting to a WPA, WPA2, None, etc WiFi's but it won't work eventhough I can see the list of available WiFis.

I've ran the "wireless-info" script that was posted in a sticky thread in this section and I've attached the results to this thread.

I'm also posting the results here if you don't feel like downloading:
