Hi, don't know where to post this (and my English isn't so good, sorry).
I just install the 16.04 in this old computer, a Compaq Presario V2000, and doesn't recognize the wifi. I have run the wireless scrip from @kc1di

Code:

I have configured in my virtual box network bridge adapter of guest Ubuntu, so I could ssh to it from the host machine.
The problem is that the guest Ubuntu ip address keep changing.
Even though it changes within a very short range 192.168.0.4-10 it is still takes time to configure Putty and other programs each time.
My Internet service provide also DHCP.

Is there a way to make the guest Ubuntu ip address to be static?

My guest OS has the full GUI.

Even i tried this process no use.

Edit /etc/network/interfaces to reflect something like this:

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
auto eth0

[ubuntu] Network manager keeps on asking for password and fails to connect

Hi, I'm running Ubuntu 16.04 on my Dell M4800 laptop. At my office I connect to the a wired network via 802.1 authentication. I recently changed my password and hence updated the stored password for the connection (in connection settings). Then when trying to connect, a pop up window asks for a password for the connection. And when I insert the password, it bounced back and asks again. It keeps on like that without connecting to the network.
I've even edited the connection configuration file in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/ by inserting the password field, but no change. I've also tried deleting the connection and re-creating a new connection (with a different name), but the problem is still there.

I connect to the same network via wifi (using the same credentials) from the same machine and it works fine. Does anyone have any idea as to what could be the problem?

thanks!

very slow WiFi Speeds Xubuntu

I installed Xubuntu 16.04 amd64bit about a week ago. So far i really like it.

When Ethernet is connected i get about 17mbps download speed.

However the speeds are VERY SLOW when i connect my J-LINK LJ-6106 Ralink 3070 , Chipset: Ralink 3070 (this same usb wifi adapter gets good speeds on my other pc running Windows 7 64bit)

I have been doing alot of searching and reading, but i cannot seem to resolve this poor wifi performance problem.

I set IPv6 settings to IGNORE and this solved the random disconnect problem.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to fix this or can you recommend a good usb wireless adapter that has good speeds out of the box?

Thank you for any help

Ethernet connects and immediately drops on 16.04.01 LTS

Have just installed 16.04.01 LTS on my HP Pavillion HPE desktop.
It has ethernet on board and was working fine with Win10.
After installation I can use wifi without problem but the ethernet connects and then drops after about a second. The symbol in the top right shows that it is connected at 100Mbps but checking with the router shows that it isn't really connected.
I have also tried installing a pci ethernet card (killer xeno) and reinstalling but that wasn't detected, it powers up and detects the cable plugged in but thats it.
Any advice and help please?
Thanks
Jon

[ubuntu] Wifi issues

So, I just installed Ubuntu alongside Windows 10 on my Lenovo T540p laptop with no issues except that my WiFi won't connect. It sees my WiFi and when I select it and type in the password it is trying to connect for about 4-5 seconds and then the login window pops up again asking me to put in the pass phrase? Any help is appreciated. I did connect it to my router directle with a cable and did the apt-get update and apt-get dist upgrade which was suggested somewhere else to no avail...

wifi unreliability

Hi all,
I've been having inermittent wifi problems for a while now at work with my laptop, and others have not been having the same problems, even those who are in the same vicinity as I am. Several times throughout the day, the internet freezes, and I have to disconnect and reconnect again, as well as kill any ssh sessions that got frozen. This has begun to happen at my wifi at home as well, though it's worse at work. I don't know how much of it is my machine, and how much is the wifi systems.
I'm using a Toshiba Satellite laptop, Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS.

I followed the instructions on this board, doing sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade, but the problem does not seem to have been resolved.

Here is some output at the tail end of the apt-get update command:

: There is no public key available for the following key IDs:

W: There is no public key available for the following key IDs:

W: Failed to fetch http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/de...stable/Release U
nable to find expected entry 'main/binary-i386/Packages' in Release file (Wrong

E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used
instead.

It should be mentioned, that I had initially downloaded Google chrome, before realizing that i couls use chromium, so I first installed chromium, meaning they coexisted, then uninstalled both, and reinstalled chrome (I usually use firefox at home and work, however)

Herre are also some error messages from my /var/log/syslog file:

Finally, i did run the wireless-info script, which I've attached the output of, although after performing the wget command, I got this at the end of the output:
Last-modified header missing -- time-stamps turned off.

Maybe nothing, not sure.

Can someone please help on this issue?

No wifi connection with 32 bit?

Hi

Uber-noob is having another problem.

I've booted Ubuntu 16.04 (64bit) fine now on a new Windows 10 machine, from USB. Also booted the 32 bit version up fine on my older Dell Inspiron with Vista. But I can't get the Dell machine to connect to wifi. In fact I can't find any wifi connection there at all.

I used this bit from the help pages "

  • Click the network menu on the menu bar and make sure that the Enable Wireless setting is checked."

But I can't see that anywhere. I can only find a network menu with an ethernet option. Or an option to create a wifi connection, but I have no idea how to do that, or if that's the right thing if no wifi is showing anywhere?

Can anyone help?

Open-Source 3G/4G support for Linux?

$

Hi guys,

I am looking for some advice for if it is possible to connect to 3G/4G networks using open-source software and firmware to prevent the risk of backdoors etc?

I have looked at USB dongles but am not entirely sure if they can be run freely. Am I correct in assuming that 3G dongles contain a separate OS that you connect to through a sort of USB to Ethernet adapter, kind of like a mini router? If so has anyone free'd this option up with the likes of open-wrt etc? If not is there a way to run dongles without the use of the internal firmware and just the use of Linux modules?

WWAN cards seem like another option to consider. Are they essentially the same thing as a USB dongle or do they operate kind of like a wlan card that loads Linuxes firmware at boot time? If it is the latter does that mean they can be run without the use of embedded firmware etc?

Any advice would be good, thanks.

WiFi dropping on group rekeying?

$

Hello,

for as long as I can remember I've been having this issue that causes my WiFi to drop (spec details in pastebin link below).
To keep it short, it mostly happens when I'm afk (sleep, out, etc.) and then when I come back, the WiFi icon shows it's still connected, but it does not reply to any ping commands.
I have to manually restart the network-manager (sometimes multiple times...) to fix it.

In the syslog file I keep seeing this line pop up:
Code:

Jul  31 08:33:42 hp-ubuntu wpa_supplicant[1035]: wlo1: WPA: Group rekeying  completed with 00:23:69:2e:53:57 [GTK=CCMP]
I'm not sure what that means, but it keeps showing up right before the connection is lost, so it might be relevant.

Here is the output of the wireless-info script:

Ubuntu upgrade destroyed my network ability

Since I upgraded to 16.04 yesterday I have had slow to no Internet on my desktop which has a wired connection to a wireless netgear extension plug under my desk. The broadband is fine, the wireless extender is fine as I can connect my mobile to it and get normal internet. But as soon as I switch on the wired connection on my desktop not only does it not work on my desktop but my mobile connection to the extender stops working as well. As if the desktop is doing something to the extender that prevents it from working properly at all. There does seem to be some very faint slow connection there but it is so bad it is hard to quantify. I don't know where to start as there is no rollback facility and the logs aren't very helpful as it replaced pretty much everything. I have tried fiddling with the ipv4 and 6 settings but so far nothing has worked.

[ubuntu] DNScrypt help

Hi all,

I'm trying to learn about DNScrypt and pair it with IPv6, but setting up DnsCrypt on linux is becoming a pain due to outdated guides and it's not in apt-get.

The guides on dnscrypt.org say to install Libsodium first, one problem - wget: 404 not found.
The docker image fetch attempt says the username/dockerimage not found.

The automated all-for-one scripts are dependent on Libsodium.

I really like DNScrypt, but its too much of a hassle, is there any other way to install it?
I checked the premade VM sites, no one has made ubuntu server + dnscrypt.

Thanks!
