thanks!

Can I rename my wifi info?

All,
I have two WIFI cards in my computer.

Card 1: PCI - A D-Link wifi card. My best performing internet card
Card 2 : USB - Poor wifi performance, but its a combo wifi and bluetooth card.

Is there a way that I can put some kind of a name on them in some config file somewhere, such that when I go into Settings -> Network, I can easily identify which card is which by name and not a long numerical value separated by : characters? Would make it easier when i'm changing network settings ( work related ).

Thanks

[xubuntu] Alternatives to network-manager?

Are there any alternatives to network-manager?

I have several issues with it, and if there's an alternative application, I would rather switch to that, than begin investigating why it's not working (though the community probably would prefer to solve the issues).

My issues are about bonding of network interfaces (poorly documented) and configuration of mac addresses messing up things.

No connection to the Internet through Ethernet

Hello, everyone.
I use 32-bit Ubuntu 12.04(kernel 3.2.0-80-generic) on eMachines E725 laptop with Pentium Dual-Core CPU T4200 2.00GHz and 2,9 GiB of RAM.
I have the following problem. When i connect network cable to the Internet, it gives me indication that connection is done, but i have no possibility to load any page. When i try to pinging the gateway, it gives me this:

Code:

kalojan@eMachines-E725:~$ ping 77.70.0.1
PING 77.70.0.1 (77.70.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
From 77.70.0.41 icmp_seq=6 Destination Host Unreachable
From 77.70.0.41 icmp_seq=20 Destination Host Unreachable
From 77.70.0.41 icmp_seq=23 Destination Host Unreachable

Here is the output of
Code:

lshw -c network
:
Code:

      resources: irq:45 memory:d3500000-d353ffff ioport:1000(size=128)

And here is the output of
Code:

ifconfig -a
for eth0 and lo interfaces:
Code:

I'm also trying to reset the interface with
Code:

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
and also with ifdown and ifup and
Code:

sudo service network-manager restart
without effect. I also try sudo
Code:

From the output of arp -a:
Code:

kalojan@eMachines-E725:~$ sudo arp -a
? (77.70.0.1) at <incomplete> on eth0 (77.70.0.1 is the IP of my gateway!)

i see that there is incomplete MAC address for the gateway. But i don't think that the problem is in the cable or gateway itself, because i try to connect to the same network another laptop and it works. So, is there any ideas where may be the problem. Sorry for poor english skills, its not my native language, i am new to Linux also.
Thanks for the answers in advance!

Hi Chilli 555, I upgraded my system from kernel version 3.17 to 3.19 and my wifi stopped working. From additional drivers I installed propeitary STA driver and have to disable the secure boot, otherwise wifi doesnt works.

Can you suggest a way in which I can make my wifi work without disabling secure boot.

I have a hp laptop with the Broadcom module as mentioned

[ubuntu] Changing reverse proxy private IP on Ubuntu

$

I have two instances on Amazon ec2. One was running Ubuntu 16.04 (LTS) while the other was running Amazon Linux AMI. They were on the same virtual private cloud and I had LAMP installed on both. I followed the directions here to enable app1 to point to the Amazon Linux AMI instance which had a private IP address of 10.0.1.27. Specifically, I edited /etc/apache2/sites-available/proxy-host.conf to consist of the following.

Code:

<VirtualHost *:80>
  ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost
  DocumentRoot /var/www/html/
  ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/error.log
  CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/access.log combined
  ProxyPreserveHost On
  # Servers to proxy the connection, or
  # List of application servers Usage
  ProxyPass /app1/ http://10.0.1.27:8080/
  ProxyPass / http://10.0.1.110:8080/
  # ProxyPassReverse / http://server-ip-address:8080/
  ServerName localhost
</VirtualHost>

Then, after I restart apache I could simply enter the following code, on a web page of the current server

Code:

<li><a href="/app1/Whatever.php">Whatever</a></li>
and the web page Whatever.php, on the server with the private IP 10.0.1.27, was displayed on my browser when I clicked the Whatever button.

However, I terminated the instance, with the private IP address 10.0.1.27, and replaced it with a Ubuntu 16.04 (LTS) server with IP address 10.0.1.7. I therefore changed the /etc/apache2/sites-available/proxy-host.conf to

Code:

<VirtualHost *:80>
  ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost
  DocumentRoot /var/www/html/
  ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/error.log
  CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/access.log combined
  ProxyPreserveHost On
  # Servers to proxy the connection, or
  # List of application servers Usage
  ProxyPass /app1/ http://10.0.1.7:8080/
  ProxyPass / http://10.0.1.110:8080/
  # ProxyPassReverse / http://server-ip-address:8080/
  ServerName localhost
</VirtualHost>

I then entered the following

Code:

sudo a2dissite proxy-host.conf
sudo a2ensite proxy-host.conf
sudo service apache2 reload
sudo service apache2 restart

However, when I click on the "Whatever" button, I get the 503 error.

Code:

Service Unavailable

The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.

Apache/2.4.18 (Ubuntu) Server at 52.207.143.84 Port 80
It appears that it is still trying to access the instance with the private IP address 10.0.1.27.

I would make app1 point to the instance, with the private IP address 10.0.1.7, instead?

I looked at the /home/ubuntu/.viminfo file and it contained the following lines.

Code:

# Registers:
"0      LINE    0
          ProxyPass /app/ http://10.0.1.7/
"1      LINE    0
        ProxyPass /app1/ http://10.0.1.27/
"2      LINE    0
        ProxyPass /app1/ http://10.0.1.27/
"3      LINE    0
        ProxyPass /app1/ http://10.0.1.27/
""-    CHAR    0
        2

I changed the 10.0.1.27 entries to 10.0.1.7 but running

Code:

sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

changes them back to 10.0.1.27. There is clearly some configuration file that sets

Code:

ProxyPass /app1/ http://10.0.1.27/

when

Code:

sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

is called but I was unable to find anything, along those lines, in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf or in /etc/apache2/httpd.conf or by calling

Code:

sudo grep app1 /etc/apache2/*.*

[xubuntu] Xubuntu 16.04 - No WiFi or USB working after kernel update

Hello guys!

I decided to install Xubuntu 16.04 in an Acer Aspire 5755G (dual booting with its factory installed Windows 7,ext4 with journaling). I couldn't access WiFi during live installation and after i installed Xubuntu on my partition. I searched for an answer on the forums and found out that reinstalling bcmwl (apt-get install --reinstall bcmwl-kernel-source) solves the issue. So i connected with Tethering and the problem vanished. However, two days later,i updated my system and probably kernel got a security patch.

After i rebooted (latest kernel was now 4.4.0-45-generic), WiFi was not working,my USB mouse was not working,my Android phone was not being recognized by my PC. As i couldn't connect with Tethering i could not try reinstalling bcmwl-kernel-source again. Fortunately i understood what the problem was but now i'm forced to launch Xubuntu with 4.4.0-31-generic.

Here's my "lspci -vnn | grep net" output:

Code:

02:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM57785 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe [14e4:16b5] (rev 10)
Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] NetLink BCM57785 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe [1025:0504]

I have Secure Boot enabled. May it be the problem?
Do i have to manually fix bcmwl-kernel-source for every kernel update Xubuntu will get?

If you need any other information about my hardware/software,just tell me and i'll send you what you need.

Hello, I've just recently installed Ubuntu 16.04 after Windows has been causing errors with my laptops GPU.

I ended up having to go through the rfkill list to enable my wifi card and I was able to connect to my WiFi. However after 10 minutes I would drop WiFi. The only way to get it back would be to restart.

Attached is the WiFi info txt file that wireless-info.tar.gz

[ubuntu] issue with wifi Ralink RT3290LE, just installed rt3290sta

Hello,

Since few weeks, my wifi doesn't start anymore (Wifi device not ready).

I noticed my wifi driver was a rt2800, but my nw card is actually a rt3290. This configuration used to work before, but somehow it stopped working and I assumed that installing the right driver would fix things. I found this post ; http://askubuntu.com/questions/54523.../557427#557427 in which Jim Colaco provides a driver for the rt3290. I installed it and follow the instructions, however i did not remove the old rt2800 before installing it ... So the whole installation of the rt3290sta went through, it showed a "FATAL" message near the end, regarding the existence of this rt2800 driver, but it didn't stop.

Then only i remove the rt2800 driver :
Quote:

sudo modprobe -rfv rt2800pci
sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
Obvisouly I did many wrong things, the wifi configuration is now out of control and i don't know what to do. Anyone can help please ?

xps 13 (early 2016), flaky wifi and DNS, not Broadcom-related --- how to restart DNS?

$

I have been reading up on the many wifi issues on the xps13, 2015 model. a 2015 xps13 is not the latest hardware, so the drivers should work. alas, no. I thought given Dell's generic linux interest that an xps13 would be a good bet. canonical should take the xps13 off the list of recommended laptops. a two-year old specialized version of ubuntu is not compatible in my book. to be recommended, a laptop should be work with the current LTS, 16.04. my advice:

Quote:

do not buy an xps13 dell laptop to run ubuntu linux.
wifi problem details: I installed 16.10, so that I am running a late kernel.

once I sleep and wakeup again, it is complete failure. my broadcom internal wifi failed after sleep. so I removed it and installed an edimax usb wifi. it works but with the same symptoms, so I don't think this is broadcom's fault. for both devices, the wifi works, but the DNS does not, because I can ssh to an external IP address. the failure is in the DNS, and not in the wifi hardware or wifi networking.

it seems to be an incorrect protection error. upon "dig google.com" and "nslookup google.com", it immediately comes back to tell me that the connection is refused, as if were an authorization error. there is no further details why it was refused. it also rejects me so fast that I am pretty sure it is something on the xps13, not on the network (which incidentally works with other computers just fine).

even an `/etc/init.d/networking restart` does not fix it. neither does switching the wifi off and on again. or switching to airplane more.
so, I know that the low-level stuff is working. I know that the high-level stuff is working after bootup, but something goes wrong after sleep. what in the world could be xps13 specific, but not hardware and wifi related??

Is there a way to use the command line to restart the DNS to make it work again?

/iaw

PS: on occasion, I think the edimax may now be overheating and lose server connection, too, which can be fixed by briefly removing it or restarting networking.

[ubuntu] Ubuntu client NOT Auto re-registering with Infoblox DNS server

I have Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise) client which gets it's IP from an Infoblox DHCP server. This Infoblox grid also acts as our DNS server (Secondary Zone for the domain abc.xyz)
When its rebooted it's DNS entry gets registered with DNS. The DHCP lease time is 4 hours & the IP also gets renewed within 2 hours. However, the DNS record is never updated & after 7 days it is auto-scavenged.

Question: Does Ubuntu have some DNS client which should periodically update the DNS record just like the DHCP client or It should be the DHCP server which should update the DNS record of the client?

Windows has a DNS setting "Register this connection's addresses in DNS" with a DNS client which periodically updates it's DNS record.

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc754143(v=ws.11).aspx

Does Ubuntu has something similar which periodically updates DNS server with it's A record?

Thank you.

Proxied Wireless Hotspot

Hello
I've tried to set up a wireless hotspot to set up a socks proxy on it (possibly using redsocks). On one computer, I ran the code from http://askubuntu.com/a/743127/. The wireless manager disappeared and there was no Internet access on the hotspot. On the other computer, I followed the guide at http://askubuntu.com/a/180734/548581. Hostapd failed with the error
Code:

ioctl[PRISM2_IOCTL_PRISM2_PARAM]: Operation not supported.
When running iw list, both computers have IBSS, managed, AP, AP/VLAN, monitor, and mesh point.
Any suggestions as to how to set up a wireless hotspot and make all TCP connections on the hotspot go through a socks5 proxy?
Thanks!

[ubuntu] traceroute with contradictory results

Hi!

I'm trying to automate a script based test to check whether my end-to-end route uses the main GateWay, or the backup gateway.

The strange thing is that:
I) when running my 'traceroute <destiny-IP>' command in tghe CLI, I always get the expected result (either when I'm using the main or backup route)
II) when I use a Cron job, running a shell script (shown below) the output of traceroute written to file does not match with the one I run directly in the CLI
Code:

# My Shell Script
#
#!/bin/bash
`traceroute 'destiny-IP' > /routes/route-to-X.txt`

# My Cron Line
#
# */5 * * * * sh /routes/cron_for_route.sh

I've tried clearing the ARP cache, but the result is still wrong with the shell script.

Does that ring a bell to you. It is seemingly a verry stupid behaviour

Thank you berry much

Canon MFD color laser printer won't print over WiFi

Hello,

I just bought a Canon i-SENSYS MF724Cdw color laser printer for use via a local wireless network.
Checked the printer, it prints on its own and scans, all good there (very nice quality, btw).
My x64-bit computer is on Ubuntu 16.04.
I downloaded the printer driver from the Canon Web site and installed it, fired up the printer and connected it successfully to the WiFi router. A blue light below the LED screen is always on, indicating that the wireless connection is active.
Then I found the printer from my computer and connected to it, also successfully. I located the printer's IP address on its panel and entered that into my computer's browser and I can see the printer, check and change its settings, see its log of print jobs, etc. But when I try to print -- both from a text editor and as a "Print test page" from the "Printer Properties" panel -- the printer gives a very brief "beep" and nothing prints. When I checked the print job log via my computer's browser, that showed that all the wireless network print requests had returned an error, the same one: "#822". This is strange because, apparently, this error code is for:
An image file in a USB memory device could not be printed because the format of the image file is not supported.
Check the supported file formats and save the file again.
Printing from USB Memory (USB Print)
(from http://ug.oipsrv.net/eu-af-me-ru/man...deappears.html)

Yet I am not printing from a USB memory device at all, but rather via a wireless network.
I tried going through the configurations, but both on the printer itself and on my computer there are probably over a hundred configuration options, so I am lost.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

WOL Causes reboot after first shutdown Wake on Lan problems

Hello all, trying to get WOL configured successfully and so far not getting anywhere. Have a supermicro board, X9SCM-F, with latest BIOS. I am told WOL is enabled by default in the BIOS. I configured WOL on ubuntu, and I am able to send a magic packet and turn the computer on. Problem is the first time i do a shutdown after using a magic packet, the computer restarts instead of reboots. If I shut it down a second time, everything goes as expected. I have searched for days now trying to find a solution (and others have had this exact problem). I have tried every setting in the bios with no change. Does anyone have any ideas? I would even be okay running some kind of script at shutdown, just need the WOL to work correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!

Ralink wifi adapter Lubuntu 14.04 ARMHF problem

I have Toshiba AC100 netbook running Lubuntu 14.04 ARMHF version and a problem with a Ralink wifi adapter (ID 148f:7601
Ralink Technology, Corp) that uses a driver called RT2870 or MT7601U available in kernel 4.2. Problem is my kernel is 3.1.9 and can't even install an old dkms driver that was previously available (mt7601-sta-dkms_3.0.0.4-
0~201602170732~rev26~pkg4~ubuntu14.04.1_all.deb; https://code.launchpad.net/~thopieka...buntu/mt7601); it comes out with errors. So, my question is: can I update this special machine/snowflake's kernel to at least 4.2 somehow without screwing up my current install? Or get this driver installed some other way? I now start to think that messing with kernel on this one is not a good idea. It's just about the driver for this adapter. I'll appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

[SOLVED] server 16.04 nogui+ifconig = 1 nic / gui+ifconfig = all nics

Im having a real problem trying to break away from a gui with ubuntu server 16.04

This was the closest that I had come to ridding myself of the over head of a gui but the last problem is with my nic cards
Code:

03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82571EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper) (rev 06)
03:00.1 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82571EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper) (rev 06)
04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82571EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper) (rev 06)
04:00.1 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82571EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper) (rev 06)
05:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev bb)
06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 0c)

During the install it asks for a nic connected internet my case the Realtek, All goes fine system gets installed updated/upgraded all things great but when i ifconfig i only have

Code:

plug a ethernet cable into one of the intel ports and plug the other end into a pc i get no traffic/link light iknow this is related to the ifconfig only showing loop back + realtek

but if i install a gui XFCE Gnome 3 currently using LXDE and run a ifconfig command i get this

every thing works plug a cable in no problem but the odd part is that when i look in /etc/network/interfaces it only shows loopback and the realtek/enp6s0

how do i get my other cards to show up in ifconfig with out a gui having to be installed I have looked every where for answers all saying to edit etc/network/interfaces and add them in all one by one this is a big problem for me doing this, These nics plug into different routers all the time so i would have to edit them all the time daily/hourly in some cases.

So just to clarify:

how do you enable other nic after you have installed ubuntu server 16.04 without editing /etc/network/interfaces
