[UbuntuGnome] Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 - Slow performance

$

This is my first post here. I've been using linux in my professional life for years but I am by no means an expert.

The machine in question is a ThinkPad W530 with an Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 [8086:4238] (rev 3e)

When booting to Windows 10, the wireless performance is excellent. However, when booting to Ubuntu the speeds seem to be "capped" at 2MB/sec. SpeedTest.net confirms I am getting about half the download speed under linux.

Link to wireless info script output: http://pastebin.com/NcfznVBg

There are many old posts related to this card. Some of the solutions seem to be outdated, others simply don't seem to work.

Any wizards here with ideas on how to fix this is appreciated. The machine is usable, just not practical with the "speed cap".

/etc/network/interfaces question

When setting a static IP address for eth0 in /etc/network/interfaces, 'nameserver' was used rather than 'dns-nameservers'

This address was also placed in /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/head using 'nameserver'

Will this cause connection issues? if an incorrect name is used on one of the lines in the stanza, is it ignored? The address is correct, just not the name.

Hi there I have a problem with my wi-fi card. Sometimes when I start my laptop running Ubuntu my wi-fi not appear. It is so confusing because sometimes work normally and sometimes not. If it's not working I have to shut down my laptop and start again. Restarting sometimes work but sometimes not, means that restarting the computer not always solve the problem.

lsb_release -d
: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
lspci: Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros Device 0042 (rev 30)

Have to say that it was hard to install those drivers for got wi-fi to work. But dont understad why it is not working properly and where should be the problem that it is not starting always.

Thanks

Ethernet connection, Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS (MATE), persistent name resolution failures

I moved to Ubuntu MATE 16.04 from Linux Mint 17.2 about 2-3 weeks ago. I did not experience the problem under consideration under Linux Mint.

I am now experiencing random drops of internet access. When such drops occur, I can no longer access new websites or new webpages, I cannot refresh webpages that are already open and I cannot launch new applications accessing the internet. However, existing connections, such as live streams, live chats, downloads or applications normally remain operational when such drops occur, even though they may also break from time to time along with the drop.

After a drop, when I am trying to access a new webpage or refresh an existing one, I receive the following browser message:

“This site can’t be reached

The webpage at https://www.youtube.com/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.
ERR_NAME_RESOLUTION_FAILED”

(This message is different from the one that I receive when I intentionally turn the internet off:

“There is no Internet connection

Try:
Checking the network cables, modem, and router
Reconnecting to Wi-Fi
ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED”)

Also, after a drop, the Network Manager continues to show that the internet/Ethernet connection is up, and the modem indicators also show that intenet connection is OK. I have an ADSL modem.

The problem can be resolved by turning the modem off and then on. After this, the internet connection is working as normal until the next drop.

I have changed my Ethernet driver from r8169 to r8168, and this reduced the frequency of the drops. However, the drops still occur even though at a smaller frequency.

The output of $ dmesg | grep r816 immediately after a reboot is as follows:

[ 1.588495] r8168: module verification failed: signature and/or required key missing - tainting kernel

X2go session - issue

Hi guys, I have an issue I am needing to resolve.

I often remote into my ubuntu box via X2go XFCE on my windows machine. Last night following some work, x2go locally crashed. This has led to x2go still running a session server side. I can still access the box via SSH and was wondering how I could terminate this session via SSH ?

This is what top -user shows

I appreciate any input. Thanks!

[ubuntu] Samba - How to make my shared folder accessible to Windows 10

$

SOLVED: See last post for solution.

I setup a folder on my Ubuntu PC and need to share it so I can access it on my Windows 10 laptop. So far, the Windows machine can't detect the shared folder. It detects the Ubuntu computer but can't access it. I installed samba, and created the folder
Code:

/home/horse/switch
, I set it to a shared folder using nautilus. It has 777 permissions:

https://i.gyazo.com/89e8af1ad9788378...f4cc849718.png

When I set the share up, it didn't add anything to
Code:

/etc/samba/smb.conf
file, so I added this myself:
Code:

[switch]
path = /home/horse/pass
valid users = horse entheologist
read only = no
browseable = yes
public = yes
writable = yes
comment = Pass between laptop and Ubuntu

So after restarting samba with /etc/init.d/samba restart when I run testparm -s everything looks right:
Code:

[switch]
comment = Pass between laptop and Ubuntu
    path = /home/horse/switch
    guest ok = Yes
    read only = No
    valid users = horse entheologist

So on the Windows 10 machine, I tried to connect to the share:
https://i.gyazo.com/c3f6486ea178f43e...95115dce14.png

and it asked me for login details:
https://i.gyazo.com/8e0645dea8c0a4d6...f6a694d494.png

I entered login details which I know are correct for both Ubuntu and for samba, but I got this message:
https://i.gyazo.com/6382953e0a8d657f...b7a594b2e0.png

the Windows machine detects the Ubuntu machine:
https://i.gyazo.com/26d5e408ca6def14...fef25aff06.png
if I try to go into \\HORSE, it won't let me, but I can get into \\192.168.1.168:
https://i.gyazo.com/8c98f6f9a8252cdc...820ec91132.png

I just can't actually get into the shared folder, it keeps asking me for credentials, but when I enter them it tells me I have no permission.

I ran this:
Code:

sudo smbpasswd -a horse
and set the password. horse is the username on the Windows machine too, so to avoid any possible clashes I added a new user called entheologist and ran smbpasswd on that user too. In the smb.conf file, these two parameters are set:

Code:

workgroup = WORKGROUP
wins support = yes

I ran
Code:

sudo ufw disable
just to make sure the Ubuntu firewall isn't interfering. But I can't see the shared folder on the Windows machine. How would I go about diagnosing what the specific problem is?

WiFi is very finicky and almost non-functional?

I am currently having a problem with my WiFi on my laptop, most likely related to the software, as my Windows partition works flawlessly with the Wi-Fi, and I didn't have any issues with Ubuntu 16.04.
I installed Ubuntu Budgie 16.10 (The same problem, however, occurs with my Ubuntu Gnome USB). The WiFi will take forever to connect, only after stubbornly disconnecting and reconnecting several times, and after finally reaching a connection, the internet works for about 10 seconds and then, even though it is connected, cannot load up any webpages.
I tried manually connecting an Ethernet cable, but to no avail- the same problem happens.
I also tried to disable IPV6 (both via network manager and via sysctl.conf) and to disable IPV4 (via network manager), but the same problem happens.
I'm using an HP Notebook, and after Pinging it in terminal, what ends up happening is that my computer cannot access any data repeatedly, and then after 6 lines of text it will connect for three lines, and this process repeats indefinitely.

I do want to stress that my Windows partition works flawlessly with the internet, with no issues at all, so I suspect it is a software related issue.

Anybody else having this issue, and has anybody come up with a solution?

Thanks,
-Matt

[ubuntu] On loopback...

I'm looking at my terminal window and loopback is screaming mtu at 65536. That's not normal to my recollection of past linux experiences. but then again I never really took a hard look at it either. One gentleman said he changed his mtu but I understood that to be a transmission unit from a source, not from eth0. Any ideas why it's so high? I'm not looking to slow down my ethernet by dropping it down past 1500. Just wondering why on the loopback (LocalMachine [this device]) is it so high?

[ubuntu] IPV6 Routing Error Wifi Connected but No Internet

I can't figure out how to get wifi working again after a slightly botched upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04. Wifi is connecting but I cannot connect to the internet. It seems I have no default route set up but am not sure what to do next. Pretty sure our router is using ipv6. Thanks for the help can't wait to get my system going again.

Add logic to nfs mounting process?

$

Ubuntu 16.10 amd64

I have an nfs share that I mount automatically from fstab thus:

Code:

10.130.0.2:/mnt/RedMirror/  /mnt/2tb nfs defaults
My automatic backup directory is on this share, so I like having it mount automatically, otherwise the backup fails.

The down side to this is that if I try to boot the system when the nfs share isn't accessible (not home, network not connected, etc) then the boot process hangs indefinitely. I don't want to add the 'user' mount option, because as I mentioned, this would break the automatic backup to network.

Is there a way to add some logic to the mount process so that it won't attempt to mount the nfs share if I'm not on a certain network, such as 10.128.0.0/14? Or to add a timeout so that boot will continue even if the share isn't mounted? Or failing those options, is there a way to manually tell the boot process to continue even while the nfs is not mounted? I tried esc and ctrl-c, but neither was effective.

I have a new network set up. All inbound and out bound traffic to the net is on eth3. All internal traffic is 192.168/.. is on eth0

I had a script for my tables for my old set up (eth0 and eth0:1) but was using a virtual card. Now that I have it on my new set up the vnc portion is not working right.

Dear Altruists

I am using a SImplecom nw382 802.11 usb wifi adapter in my desktop. Its succesfully operating in windows environment. But in UBuntu 16.04 environment the wifi is not detecting.I assume that I did not install the hardware correctly.

A. I have tried to install the following provided driver, "20140812_rtl8192EU_linux_v4.3.1.1_11320" following the readme note.
Code:

1. tar zxvf 20140812_rtl8192EU_linux_v4.3.1.1_11320.tar.gz
  and cd to 20140812_rtl8192EU_linux_v4.3.1.1_11320
2. make
3. su-> enter your root password
4. make install

But the make fails showing bunches of errors. The output link is provided here

B. Then I try the following command: sudo apt-get update
And the output comes following:
Code:

I just installed Ubuntu 16.04 on an old laptop and erased the Windows XP files, but now Ubuntu can't connect to the internet using wireless or ethernet. When I open the network icon, it shows "Enable Networking" but not "Enable Wireless." I'm suspecting that installing Ubuntu might have erased some drivers or software I needed. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!!

I have a nice Lenovo Yoga Pro 13 that has always given me trouble with the wireless card and I replaced it twice and then it was working mostly all of 2016 on 16.04 and just recently I started using a wired connection and when I looked today at my network manager list there is no longer a WiFi option.

Can anyone help get my wireless working again?

So, I have a WDTVLiveHub plugged into my wireless router. It has been working flawlessly with 16.04 and many versions before that, although I have encountered this problem previously during upgrades. Normally, I stumble around, try different things, and, eventually, it works. I usually reset my router, restart it, re-boot the WDTV live, reboot, reboot, reboot. This time, so far, no joy.
It's very frustrating, and, to my thinking, nothing that I have done incorrectly.
Can anyone offer some clear routes to resolution.

I have browsed this error message on the forum and elsewhere, and many offer solutions, but they generally assume navigational knowledge that leaves me grouping to implement their suggestions.
Comments/advice truly welcome.

Machine is an Asus gs74, dual boot with Win10 (WDTVlive is working fine in Win10), running Ubuntu 16.10 64.

Thanks.

wi-fi and bluetooth not working at the same time

I have recently upgraded to Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS 64-bit from Windows.
I can access my wi-fi network
I can stream music to my bluetooth soundbar.
If I try to do both at the same time now, e.g stream audio from youtube, my soundbar is not found. If I switch-off the Wi-Fi, everything gets back to normal. I have no idea how to solve this.
Here the output of lspci -knn | grep Net -A2; lsusb

Tenda W311U+ Driver Issue

I'm a windows user and new to the whole linux environment(apart from dirstos). so, if you want to help me. please give a detailed one.thanks

I get the following errors when i try to use make command in the driver's directory. I read the instructions, but I can't figure it out which one to change(on the third step). I need someone who's kind enough, to download the driver from my google drive(it's 1MB or from tenda's website if you don't trust it), try to compile the driver and tell me what has been changed if it was successfull - also check the instructions at the end please. I want to define/change gcc and ld paths but I don't know which one to change.

The usb adaptor works and connects to my wireless router, but I need to install it's driver properly, I know that If the wireless NIC's driver wasn't installed properly, It would show it as(for example in my case) : wlxc83a35ca5ee6 rather than it's normal name — I need to use this usb adaptor on softwares like wireshark and etc without any issues.

Hello, I recently built a PC and didn't want to purchase an OS so I decided to go with Ubuntu. i am unable to have a wired connection long term and need to find a way to set this wireless adapter I found to work with Ubuntu. It is a D-Link DWl-g122, I have searched for instructions on how to set it up but it is confusing and i don't know where to start! I have a little bit of experience with linux but not enough to know how to do this. Thanks!
