[ubuntu] Ubuntu/Ubuntu file sharing for non-admin users?

$

Hi!

I have a PC running 19.04 & a Netbook running 16.04, both on my local WiFi network.
I am admin on both.
I have File/Folder Sharing working OK between my own files, both ways, on these 2 machines.

But I can't make my wife's Files/Folders shareable on either machine.
If I try from her desk, I get an error message:
Code:

'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: failed to add share desktop. Error was Operation not permitted
Other methods, like accessing her files via file manager from my own desk & trying to make them shareable from there, or "Opening file manager as Admin" from either desk also failed for various reasons (which I could detail if of any interest).

Should it be possible to share non-admin-user's files?
If so - how?

Thanks for any help!

I am new to Ubuntu. I am running Ubuntu 18.04.3 from a live USB on my laptop (ASUS X409FA-EK034T). I wish to connect to the internet wirelessly. When I go to Settings > Wi-Fi I see the message

No Wi-Fi Adapter Found
Make sure you have a Wi-Fi adapter plugged in and turned on

How can I connect to the internet by Wi-Fi?

Can't access windows shared folder from Ubuntu

Hello,

I connected my Windows machine with the Ubuntu one over Ethernet cable.
Then setup IPv4 at both sides (i.e. Windows & Ubuntu) and check connection using ping. It was Ok.
Then I created shared folder in Windows.
Then I tried to connect windows using "Files"->"Other connections"->then in "Connect to server" I typed "smb://192.168.0.1 (i.e. IP address of Windows for wired connection)
In the opened window I typed User ID and password, then clicked on "Connect".
... and nothing happened.
What should I check/setup in both systems (i.e. Ubuntu & Windows).

Thanks

[server] Unable to exploit network speed potential

Hi,

I have a server and a NAS connected to the same 10 Gbit network
  • MacMini with Sonnet 10Gbit TB2 adapter, running Ubuntu 19.10 server
  • Synology NAS DiskStation DS1819+ with 10Gbit NIC, running DMS DSM 6.2.2-24922 Update 3
  • UniFi Switch XG 16
  • Both devices are connected directly to the switch with Cat 6 ethernet cables (< 3m)

I have ran an iPerf3 test between the two devices, and I can't seem to reach more than ~ 5 Gbit/s, so there is also a network issue I need to address, but the biggest problem is that I'm far from exploiting even the 5 Gbit/s when transferring files. I'm quite new to Ubuntu server, and I'm not able to identify whether this is only a network issue or something else (maybe network drive mounting?).

When I do a scp between the server and the NAS (both directions), I don't achieve more than 80 MB/s.

Here is the output from my /etc/netplan/*.yaml
Code:

# This file is generated from information provided by# the datasource.  Changes to it will not persist across an instance.
# To disable cloud-init's network configuration capabilities, write a file
# /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg.d/99-disable-network-config.cfg with the following:
# network: {config: disabled}
network:
    ethernets:
        ens1:
            dhcp4: true
            mtu: 9000
    version: 2

This is the output from ifconfig ens1
Code:

ens1: flags=4163<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST>  mtu 9000
        inet 192.168.5.46  netmask 255.255.255.0  broadcast 192.168.5.255
        inet6 fe80::230:93ff:fe11:a8b  prefixlen 64  scopeid 0x20<link>
        ether 00:30:93:11:0a:8b  txqueuelen 1000  (Ethernet)
        RX packets 163190936  bytes 211725794759 (211.7 GB)
        RX errors 0  dropped 89  overruns 0  frame 0
        TX packets 118980097  bytes 195761653265 (195.7 GB)
        TX errors 0  dropped 0 overruns 0  carrier 0  collisions 0

This is the mount I have done in /etc/fstab
Code:

//192.168.5.45/Media\040Vault /media/gringotts nfs credentials=/home/ole/.smbcredentials,vers=3.0,rsize=1048576,wsize=1048576,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0
MTU is also sat to 9000 on the Synology network interface

Please let me know if there is anything else I can provide to make it easier to troubleshoot, and also sorry if I'm just overlooking something really basic. I'm new to this whole Ubuntu Server and 10Gbit thing.

Thank you in advance.

Hotspot "activation of network connection failed"

Hello.
I've been trying to setup a hotspot from my laptop, I'm using Legion Y530, but I keep getting an error message at the top of my screen saying "activation of network connection failed" after few seconds of trying to activate the hotspot.
I have in the past succeeded in turning it on, so its for sure not a hardware issue.

Hi everyone. I've read several related topics here about my rt2800usb driver and slow wifi connections. But i still don't get good results. Best i can get on Ubuntu 19.10 is 10Mbit, on Windows i get 100Mbit.
I started that wireless-info tool. Here are my settings: https://pastebin.com/Zst1CJd8

I hope someone can help me fix my wifi and reduce my headaches :)
If i did something wrong or if you need more info, please let me know.

[ubuntu] need some direction for a multiple NIC yaml file

Hi all,

So I can't figure out how to setup a yaml netplan file for 4 NIC cards.

The NIC IDs are eno1, eno2, eno3, eno4 all located in the same machine

Would like to use 192.168.1.11 for eno1, 192.168.1.12 for eno2, 192.168.1.13 for eno3, and finally 192.168.1.14 for eno4 all using a gateway and DNS of 192.168.1.1

If someone can help me with this, because I can't even ssh into this machine anymore. The more I try, the more I butcher the file.

Regards

Options for maintaining connectivity when the power is cut?

Right, so PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric) in California has decided they can switch our power off when it seems like they might accidentally start a wildfire because they "forgot" to spend the money to maintain their power lines.

I'm regrettably old school on this one. Can anyone give me a hint about how to use a cellphone cheaply to maintain a decent, if not stellar, internet connection? Can a cellphone be made to act as an AP for a desktop or laptop, even though the electricity, and along with it, the cable company and its cable modem, has gone dark? Can you do it without paying for an expensive "tethering" plan?

Thanks in advance.

BTW: Hey all, been gone from the forums for a while... Glad the forums still seem to thrive.

Incorrect IP address, gateway; where is it getting this address?

Can anyone help me solve a network problem?

For years and years my media /web server has had the same local ip address and over those years that ip (192.168.1.100) got really entrenched. Now, I've had to change its address because I moved and the only way to get something even approaching usable internet speeds was to use a hybrid cell/DSL router from the telecom. That router wouldn't let me use 192.168.1.xxx; the closest I could set it to was 192.168.2.xxx. So, I changed the 1 to a 2 everywhere i could find it, but still couldn't get on the internet. I tried setting network manager to use automatic dhcp, but still couldn't get online. The correct (new) ip showed up when I queried it and was in the gui info, but still nothing: "no route to host".

What I stumbled on is that when I pinged there was the old ip:

htpc@htpc:~$ ping -c5 198.252.206.24
PING 198.252.206.24 (198.252.206.24) 56(84) bytes of data. From 192.168.1.100 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable From 192.168.1.100 icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable From 192.168.1.100 icmp_seq=3 Destination Host Unreachable From 192.168.1.100 icmp_seq=4 Destination Host Unreachable From 192.168.1.100 icmp_seq=5 Destination Host Unreachable
--- 198.252.206.24 ping statistics --- 5 packets transmitted, 0 received, +5 errors, 100% packet loss, time 4098ms pipe 4

[but then if I do this...]
htpc@htpc:~$ sudo ip route add default via 192.168.2.1
[presto]
htpc@htpc:~$ ping -c5 198.252.206.24
PING 198.252.206.24 (198.252.206.24) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 198.252.206.24: icmp_seq=1 ttl=54 time=115 ms 64 bytes from 198.252.206.24: icmp_seq=2 ttl=54 time=116 ms 64 bytes from 198.252.206.24: icmp_seq=3 ttl=54 time=116 ms 64 bytes from 198.252.206.24: icmp_seq=4 ttl=54 time=114 ms 64 bytes from 198.252.206.24: icmp_seq=5 ttl=54 time=116 ms

I know the output is old, but I have tried clearing the ARP table since then, but this is still ongoing.
I've now tried to install Bubbleupnp and though i go to the correct address to get the web interface, it's listening on the old, nonexistent address

I have just setup Ubuntu 19.10 on a Raspberry Pi4 and am using tightvnc from a linux laptop to access it remotely, headless. I am able to connect via ssh, with remmina and use the internet.

The wifi icon (two arrows) is greyed out and the settings from there are also greyed out. I thought that wifi was automatically associated.

[lubuntu] Share Files from Lubuntu?

$

Hi!

I just installed Lubuntu 18.04.3 (so LXDE) on my little old Asus EeePC Netbook, replacing Ubuntu which had been getting too troublesome.

Most things are working very well, but I am unable to share files from Lubuntu on my local WiFi network.
(Note: - I have another thread open on non-admin file sharing in Ubuntu, but I think this is really a separate subject)

From the Lubuntu Netbook, I can easily see & manipulate shareable files on my main Ubuntu 19.04 PC.
From the PC, I see the Netbook but only the folder "print$".
(Printing over the network from the Netbook works fine, by the way.)

When I tried to make files shareable in Lubuntu, I started in the pcmanfm file manager by right-clicking the file & selecting "Properties" but there is nothing there concerning sharing.

I saw somewhere that I should be able to Go: Preferences > Samba and see a Samba Configuration GUI to make files shareable, but I don't find Samba anywhere in my menus, Preferences, System tools, Accessories etc...
Samba IS installed & I can open the smb.conf file OK, but I don't want to start messing with that file.

Is there a GUI method I have missed?

Thanks!

[server] Usb ax88179 based network adpater needs to be replug after boot

Hi,

I have a very basic home server made from a very cheap hp desktop. It has a proprietary motherboard which only supports 100Mbits\s on the Ethernet adapter and no available pci slots for any sort of expansion.. So I decided to buy a Gigabit Ethernet Adapter since it does have 2 USB3.1 on the back! I had some problems since ubuntu wasn't automatically starting the card up, don't no why, but now it runs fine. That is until the pc is restart, where the card seems to hang and ubuntu cant initialize it nor can I do it manually with ifconfig <card> up. I really have to unplug it and plug it back in for it to work. This is quite annoying since every time the pc needs to restart/loses power I have to physically go there and resolve it. Any one had similar experiences?

The ethernet adaptar is also a hub with 3 extra USB3.1 ports which I though was a good idea but don't know if it is interfering or not. I also have an external hard drive connected to the other USB3.1 port an it mounts on boot using fstab without any problems.

This is the output of "lshw -class network" referent to the new card:
Code:

description: Ethernet interface
      physical id: 2
      logical name: enx000088ab3d8b
      serial: 00:00:88:ab:3d:8b
      size: 1Gbit/s
      capacity: 1Gbit/s
      capabilities: ethernet physical tp mii 10bt 10bt-fd 100bt 100bt-fd 1000bt 1000bt-fd autonegotiation
      configuration: autonegotiation=on broadcast=yes driver=ax88179_178a driverversion=22-Aug-2005 duplex=full firmware=ASIX AX88179 USB 3.0 Gigabit Et ip=192.168.1.91 link=yes multicast=yes port=MII speed=1Gbit/s

Also, I'm running Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS, 4.15.0-66-generic

Thanks in advance!

[ubuntu] how to set wifi password in ubuntu-19.10-preinstalled-server-arm64+raspi3.img.xz

I installed ubuntu-19.10-preinstalled-server-arm64+raspi3.img.xz on an SD card, and got my Raspberry Pi 4 to boot.
However, the next instructions in https://ubuntu.com/download/iot/raspberry-pi say to run apt-get. Apt-get requires a network.

So, where do I add my wifi passwords? I tried putting the NetworkManager directory on a USB stick, but the Pi won't mount it.

[ubuntu] VPN setup on Netgear Nighthawk router

I just moved to a new location and my ISP (Mediacom) does not support VPN. So I got a new router a Netgear Nighthawk R7000. The Media tech support "baselined" their modem (ie turned of routing). I have turned on the VPN on the R7000 and still get the "The VPN connection disconnected because the VPN service stopped".

I have installed openvpn "sudo apt-get install openvpn" and "sudo apt-get install network-manager-openvpn"

I downloaded the config files from netgear and put them in /home/{user}/vpn folder.
ca.crt, client.crt, client.key, and client2.conf

The site I was following said to copy the OpenVPN configuration file (e.g. vpn1234B_1.ovpn) to the installation directory. There is no .ovpn file and I can't find one anywhere. The onlything in the /etc/openvpn directory is update-resolv-con.

I'm trying to connect to my work computer from home. If I use my cell phone as a hotspot it works fine so I know my settings are correct.

I tried portforwarding 1173 and nothing.

I am on 16.04.

Any help would be appreciated.
