i just purchased a new dell and installed ubuntu 14.04 on it. A few google searches led me to run the command
sudo lshw -C network

This is the output:

Some mor digging dropped me at https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/...rivers/iwlwifi

Finding my model number (7265) let me to this file iwlwifi-7265-ucode-22.24.8.0.tgz because i have kernel 3.13.0.62 and firmware 22.4.8.0.
Should installing this file update my system? If so, where do I put the unzipped files? Doing this it gave the error that
While I don't remember where I found the command, the site suggested I run: sudo rmmod iwlwifi

which gave me the error:
ERROR: Module iwlwifi is in use by: iwlmvm

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be happy to entertain what to do next!

Thanks

John

[ubuntu] Poor wifi performance using intel 7265

I have a Intel NUC with a Intel 7265 Wireless card. Ever other computer in my house is 50+Mbps on speedtest,net, but this NUC running Ubuntu 15.04 gets less than 4Mbps. I reviewed and followed some of the steps at an older thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ght=intel+7265), but since there appears to be newer firmware, i am unsure if I should try all of those methods. I did try adding

Code:

options iwlwifi 11n_disable=8
And
Code:

options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1

to the end of
Code:

/etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
However, no improvement occurred. Is there any updated information on improving the performance of this wireless card? Thanks
Britt

Attempting to use configure a free vpn from: http://www.justfreevpn.com/

After configuring the pptp connection, I tried to start it, but got this error mesg:
"vpn service failed to start"

I tried to start the vpn service manually by opening a terminal and then typing:
"sudo service openvpn start"

Terminal responds with:
* Starting virtual private network daemon(s)...

However, VPN still doesn't work.
Still getting errors.

I am running ubuntu desktop 14.04.3 desktop x64 bit.

I had installed but removed both Shrew Soft VPN Access Manager and KVpnc.

Please assist.

[ubuntu] How to connect to an existing network

$

Having successfully installed Ubuntu 14.4 over a corrupted XP os, I have been trying to get connected to the internet, and as a complete novice, I am confused by the process. When I left click on the little fan-shaped icon in that taskbar at the top of the screen, a small box appears with the following options: Ethernet network (this is grayed out)
disconnected (grayed out)
VPN connections >
^ Enable Networking (the ^ signifies a check mark)
Connection information (grayed out)
Edit connections
When I select the last of the above options, a small screen appears entitled "Network Connections" and which contains the following:
Name Last Used Add (a box)
Ethernet Edit (a box)
Auto ethernet 1 day ago Delete (a box)
WiFi
WiFi Connection2 Never
WiFi Connection1 Never
(I did mention that I've beet trying to connect, which explains the abortive entries - I actually tried to connect a router before I realized that I had no modem or cable connection where this computer is located:oops:)
When, in the "Network Connections" screen, I select one of the WiFi Connection options a new larger screen appears entitled "Editing WiFi Connection" which contains several tabs: General - WiFi - WiFi Security - IPv4Settings - IPv6Settings but the screen seems to open defaulted to the "WiFi" screen, which contains the following:
SSID
Mode
BSSID
Device MAC address
Cloned MAC address
MTV Automation - + bytes
To someone like me, accustomed to Windows' more or less automatic handling of connections, this is pretty bewildering. I think I know what the SSID is (I think), but not much else. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could walk me through this process, or tell me where I could get simplified, detailed instructions.

wpa_supplicant don't reach freeradius in wired 802.1x EAP-TLS

$

Hi everybody! ):P

I want to make setup a 802.1x EAP-TLS connexion with freeradius, wpa_supplicant and a Cisco Switch

My network : supplicant eth0-----f1/1 SWITCH f1/0-----eth1 Freeradius

the Switch is an emulated Switch with GNS3 (IOS Cisco c3700/3725)
freeradius is on a vm (virtualbox, ubuntu-server 14.04)
the supplicant is my computer (ubuntu desktop 14.04, with wpa_supplicant)

So I run "freeradius -X" on the vm and "wpa_supplicant -Dwired -ieth0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -ddd"
Here the problem with wpa_supplicant :
Code:

...
EAPOL: startWhen --> 0
EAPOL: SUPP_PAE entering state CONNECTING
EAPOL: txStart
TX EAPOL: dst=01:80:c2:00:00:03
TX EAPOL - hexdump(len=4): 02 01 00 00
EAPOL: startWhen --> 0
EAPOL: SUPP_PAE entering state CONNECTING
EAPOL: txStart
TX EAPOL: dst=01:80:c2:00:00:03
TX EAPOL - hexdump(len=4): 02 01 00 00
EAPOL: idleWhile --> 0
EAP: EAP entering state FAILURE
CTRL-EVENT-EAP-FAILURE EAP authentication failed
EAPOL: SUPP_PAE entering state AUTHENTICATING
EAPOL: SUPP_BE entering state FAIL
EAPOL: SUPP_PAE entering state HELD
EAPOL: Supplicant port status: Unauthorized
EAPOL: SUPP_BE entering state IDLE
EAPOL authentication completed unsuccessfully
...

I don't know if something in this output means that the switch is responding or not... :|
Are these normal? : startWhen --> 0 and idleWhile --> 0 ?
I see nothing on the freeradius side, it's waiting ("Ready to process requests." and no more output)
My wpa_supplicant configuration :
Code:

    ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
    eapol_version=2
    ap_scan=0
    fast_reauth=1
    network={
        ssid=""
        key_mgmt=IEEE8021X
        eap=TLS

        ca_cert="/xxx/cacert.pem"
        client_cert="/xxx/client_cert.pem"
        private_key="/xxx/client_key.pem"
        private_key_passwd=""
    }

My Freeradius configuration :
Code:

/eap.conf :
    default_eap_type = tls
    tls {
        private_key_password = (rien)
        private_key_file = ${certdir}/server_key.pem
        certificate_file = ${certdir}/server_cert.pem
        CA_file = ${certdir}/cacert.pem
        dh_file = ${certdir}/dh
        random_file = ${certdir}/random
    }
/client.conf :
    client 192.168.2.1/24 {
        secret = pass
        shortname = R2
        nastype = cisco
    }
/users :
    admin    Cleartext-Password := "pass"
            Service-Type = NAS-Prompt-User,
            Cisco-AVPair = "shell:priv-lvl=15"

I create a vlan for this part : SWITCH f1/0-----eth1 Freeradius, from the switch I can ping the VM and from the VM ping the vlan IP
My Cisco configuration :

I installed xubuntu on an old laptop,an Acer Aspire 3050 1594,which i upgraded the cpu to a AMD turion X2 TL-64 and the ram to 3gb. the wireless card in the laptop is a Broadcom bcm94318mpg.

Before now i have never used linux before so this is all new to me,i have no clue what i am doing lol.

When i first installed xubuntu i was not connected to the internet, i have connected using a wired connection.

I then tried some things in terminal that i got from google,but none worked,and i have no idea what to do.

Here is that i have tried already.

"sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer"
"sudo apt-get install firmware-b43legacy-installer"

But they said something like package not found.

What do i do?

Thank you guys for helping me.

[server] [15.04] [X64] [Bug] IPtables Drastically Slows down connection when enabled.

Hello all, I am wandering if any one else has ran into the issue of on vivid verity, when IPTables is enabled incoming tcp traffic is negligibly slow.

I found this by running a speed test using the command line using the following method.

$ wget -O speedtest-cli https://raw.github.com/sivel/speedte...eedtest_cli.py
$ chmod +x speedtest-cli
$ ./speedtest-cli

I noticed my ssh connection was sluggish after enabling the firewall so changing my policy to accept and flushing the rules list before testing was my first port of call.

Running the script above without iptables enabled i was getting 8ms ping, 23mb down and 5.2mb up after enabling iptables i was getting 456ms ping, 1.2mb down and 0.2mb up.

I also tested this out by firing up a couple of digital ocean droplets the $20 ones.
On ubuntu 15.04 without iptables i was getting around 10ms ping, 466mb down and 122mb up on each test.
With iptables enabled i hit around 4010ms ping, 7.60mb down and 1.97mb up on each test.

Then i spun up multiple ubuntu 14.04 servers and ran the same tests

without iptables enabled i was getting in the area of 10ms, 466mb down and 122mb up same as on 15.04,
with iptables i was getting results in the area of 7.3ms ping, 462mb down and 131mb up.

Each os was tested 6 times all x64.

Has anyone else ran in to this issue, if so did you resolve it and how?

[ubuntu] Upgrading 12.04 to 14.04, then frequently disconnecting wifi

connecting to wifi from command line for the first time

Somebody botched up a Ubuntu install on an ASUS Eee PC and only the Ubuntu command line is available. I need to connect to the wifi.

I tried using the nmcli command but I get the message that I need to install network manager. So its a catch 22 because I need an internet connection to install network manager.

I am stuck on how to proceed. My goal is to have Ubuntu fully functional on the computer.

Thanks in advance.

Hello guys,
Ive been using linux for a couple years now, I've managed to tackle most problems by searching for solutions on google. However, lately I've encountered a problem that I can't seem to find an answer anywhere online.

I have about 10 computers running on Ubuntu and the rest on windows, I have two internet connections from different ISPs, one is for backup. Both connections have been working flawlessly then all of a sudden a problem started which is affecting only connection from one ISP. The problem is, I can't access some websites on any computer running on linux especially yahoomail, hotmail, bbc and others but I can access all these websites on a windows machine! I keep on getting the error "secure connection failed" on firefox and "No data received" on chrome. I've never come across this type of problem before...

Why would an internet connection work on microsoft windows machines only?, how come the other connection from a different ISP is working on both linux and windows machines? could it be something with the ISP in question?

Kindly anyone advice me on this matter

Regards

Cosmas.

[ubuntu] Precise on R31 Thinkpad and Realtek 8188 Dongle Crashes Attempting To Go Online

Greetings:

I tried my best to follow the canceled topic line: Networking & Wireless > RealTek RTL-8188CUs working well-how to

I am reviving a R31 Thinkpad with Ubuntu 12.04 since Thinkpad sites say that’s the best Ubuntu version to efficiently run on this machine. To network I'm using a Realtek 802.11n dongle with mini-CD containing RTL8188 CU and RTL8188 EU folders. After repeated failed attempts at using the CD's software I tapped the advice to try scripts and drivers on-line and found in the canceled topic the closest remedy, https://code.google.com/p/realtek-81...1304/Tjeremiah as mentioned the canceled topic.

The R31 at last logs on the web via wifi and even the clock and weather apps update real-time as normal as does software update. But if I attempt to use a browser or access the web via CLI the system crashes. The particulars of my system as follows:

TP-LINK Router

I need a router to go with an Intel NUCi5 system running Ubuntu 14.04. Is there any reason why a router would pose special problems just because it's attached to a Linux box? In particular has anyone tried using the TP-LINK Archer C9 router with Ubuntu? - it gets good reviews. Any advice welcome!

Some details about caching in firefox

Basically, I wanna have all cache in RAM instead of my SSD. [I have disabled 'disk cache', should I disable 'offline cache' too?]

  1. Setting browser.cache.memory.capacity to -1, I saw that it set 32768kB. Would it be automatically increased when I watch 5-10 videos in diffeent tabs so that I can go back and forward in video without burffering them again?
  2. If it doesn't automatically increase the size of memory cache, may I set around 2gB in browser.cache.memory.capacity? Doing that would not reserve a 2gB for firefox exclusively when its running, right?....say, if firefox is running with caching 500mB in RAM, and only 1.5gB is left, then other programs can use that memory too, right?

[kubuntu] network-manager will not use reserved dhcp

On my windows dhcp server at the office I have set a reservation for my laptop. However when I restart dhcp network-manager is still getting the old ip address. When I looked at the traffic in wireshark I say that my laptop was requesting to the old ip address. I tried removing the /var/lib/dhcp/dhclient.leases file and restarting dhcp. Still it would not work. I am running Kubuntu 14.04. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
