[UbuntuGnome] Help with VNC access

$

Hi everyone,

Apologies for my n00b message, but I'm new to Ubuntu and am facing the challenge of getting it all to work!

I'm running Ubuntu Gnome on my media server, and I would like to set up a way to remote access into it from my Mac OSX. Whether this is done through VNC, RDP, or something else I don't mind; but I've tried a few things that haven't worked and at the moment I'm trying to get VNC to work.

I have (I think) installed VNCServer onto my Linux server, and am able to run the following commands which lead me to believe I've done it at least partially right:
  • Service VNCSERVER Stop (works OK)
  • Service VNCSERVER Start (works OK); "VNC server is already running as :1"

However, I'm not sure whether I've got the rest of it set up correctly. Specifically, when I try to log in using VNC Client on my Mac it doesn't work:
  • 192.168.0.2:5900 (I've also tried 5901 and 5902)
    • On 5900: "Unable to connect to VNC Server using your chosen security setting. Either upgrade VNC Server to a more recent version from RealVNC, or select a weaker level of encryption."
    • On 5901/5902: "The connection was refused by the host computer"

I recognize that there is likely additional detail that you need to understand what aspects are malfunctioning here, so if you let me know what you need (and ideally how to find it!) I'll come back to you right away.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Ryan

[xubuntu] xubuntu (samba) > windows 7 shared hp deskjet 3940

The windows 7 machine is set up with an hp deskjet 3940, with correct drivers, it is shared, with password protected sharing off, I can add the printer easily through system-config-printer the samba url is correct.

When I print anything from one of my two Ubuntu machines, the windows 7 machine receives it and puts it in the print queue the printer begins the normal warm up, and then the paper never feeds through the printer, and the document sits in the queue on the windows 7 machine until it is manually removed and the pc is restarted.

I tried installing a newer version of hplip from the official site http://hplipopensource.com/ and configuring it with system-config-printer, and the same thing happened.

However printing from other windows 7 machines works.

Here is the printer section of my smb.conf:

Code:

[printers]
  comment = All Printers
  browseable = no
  path = /var/spool/samba
  printable = yes
  guest ok = no
  read only = yes
  create mask = 0700

# Windows clients look for this share name as a source of downloadable
# printer drivers
[print$]
  comment = Printer Drivers
  path = /var/lib/samba/printers
  browseable = yes
  read only = yes
  guest ok = no

Anyone using WICD instead of NetworkManager?
If so, how did you get the icon to show in the tray?

Samsung R580 Laptop Wireless issues. Kubuntu 15.04 Kernel 4.1.6

Hi,

first post. I have Samsung R580 i3 4gb ram etc.. it's 5 years old. Shipped with Win7 32 bit.

Last year I installed Mint 17 64bit as I was new to Linux, so duel booted. However I didn't use it much because the wireless connection would drop to a few mbit connection speed after a few minutes, making it unusable.

I did Google and forum searches for answers, but nothing seemed either easy to implement, or work.

But, I wanted to use linux after using Win 10 since Feb on the insider program, so I did a complete clean install of Kubuntu 15.04 64bit on the laptop last week, no duel booting, just linux.

After having the same wireless issues, I upgraded the Kernel to 4.1.6, but to no avail. Everything works, but again, wireless connects, but drops to a few mbits speed after 2 minutes or so. I do have a Texet wireless usb as back up but cannot fathom how to install it as its not plug-and-play like windows, It does have Makefiles, but I'm new to Linux.

I would rather get the native wifi card to work.

I installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS as a dual boot on windows vista ultimate. Ethernet Wired connections doesn't seem to be working. Also, eth0 does show up on ifconfig -a. But without Add. inet neither mask, etc. When apply dhcp manually i got this:

eth0:avahi Link encap:Ethernet direcciónHW 00:24:1d:13:3d:08
Direc. inet:169.254.2.180 Difus.:169.254.255.255 Másc:255.255.0.0
ACTIVO DIFUSIÓN MULTICAST MTU:1500 Métrica:1

Any help on getting the wired connection sorted?

Thanks a lot

Hi all, first of all i am completely new to Linux based OS , i bought a new laptop Lenovo Ideapad G50-70 59439302
and installed Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS on it.
everything works fine except the WiFi
it connects to my WiFi at first but after about 15-20 minutes it disconnects , if i reboot then its connected again for 15 minutes
and of course i cant reboot my laptop every 15 mins just to have WiFi again.

is this problem known?
is there a solution?

Notes:

internet works with Ethernet cable plugged in
Additional drivers show "no additional drivers available" - with or without Ethernet cable plugged
Kernel version is 3.19

thanks in advance,
barad

[ubuntu] Is there a way around ISP blocks?

$

My ISP is blocking almost all the ports used by BitTorrent clients, and even when they're not blocked, the speed is throttled (download speeds of 20-30 KB/s with a supposed bandwidth of 50 mbps). Is there a way around this? I use Transmission, and more recently, Deluge. I need to download a lot of films (obviously only the ones that are in the public domain).

Thanks in advance.

hp notebook 15/ubuntu 15.04 wireless not working

I know there's quite a few posts of this nature, but I couldn't find any with my specific card. So if an existing post covers me, lemme know and sorry 😆

So- hp notebook 15 500 gig hd with win8.1. I bought it in the fall and installed ubuntu 14.04 to dual boot. A couple weeks ago while booting into Windows, I got a blue error screen, and after some diag, discovered my hard drive is bad.
BUT
The 250 gig half with ubuntu still works, only I was having wireless issues. So I downloaded 15.04 with my phone and updated but still have the issue.
Wireless turns on/off, scans and lists everything, and connects fine. But no pages will load, no packages will dl. Yesterday I switched over to my fiances account and wireless was working, but at some point stopped and is back to the same thing. *

Hp notebook 15
Ubuntu 15.04
Realtek RTL8188EE network adapter

I'm having to use my phone right now, it won't let me attach any outputs

[ubuntu] Wireless Module Not Loading After Suspend

Hi,
I've spent a few days searching this an other forums, but can't find a solution that seems to work for me, so giving it a post.

Wireless on my laptop running 12.04 is fine about 60% of the time. However, about every 7th - 12th time I resume from suspend, it appears the wireless module doesn't load and I can't load it by hand either.

Any ideas on how to get the wireless module re-installed and running without a reboot?
Thanks!

I have Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and i am forced to use an ethernet connection for now. I've tried to install new drivers and change settings but nothing has helped so far. When i try to connect it may connect but the connection is very unstable and disconnects after a short time. Then it trys to reconnect while sometimes it may connect and other times it will just say keep trying to reconnect. Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8188EE Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)
I had windows 8 in the past and the internet was fine but it got erased for Ubuntu and now the wifi doesn't work.

Hi there,

I have two computers, one of which is always on (let's call it the server). I can access the latter through two levels of SSH (hence 2 passwords).
I am interested in synchronize some files between both computers each time the first computer turns off.
To do so, it might be interesting to use bash files. Though I have read on expect files, it might not be a good idea to mix both.
There are a number of issues I face. Do I absolutely need to create SSH keys, or the passwords may be simply written within the bash file ?
If I do need, how to do it on the second layer ?
Second, would there be any good tutorial on how to handle such back up ? (and also, to tell when the synchronization should happen).
It would be a two-way synchronization. I haven't come up with any similar stuff on the web.

Thanks,

and get:

Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM43142 802.11b/g/n [14e4:4365] (rev 01)

and the hard is blocked for the ideapad_wlan: Wireless LAN

Could I get some help? Thank you very much.

So we just changed our router and i got my wired internet working (perfect) however the next day Ubuntu is not able to find any wired connection, even though i tried different outputs on the router. I used the same ethernet cable when i had win 7 and the first day after changing router, where it actually worked, so the cable should be fine Any suggestions?7

I'm new to Ubuntu, if you need some info from terminal, please tell me which commands i have to use :)

[SOLVED] Live remote screen view using x11vnc on server - client xtightvncviewer

I have been running x11vnc server on a Raspberry Pi2 for some months now, accessing it from Windows 8.1 using Tightvnc viewer, a gui interface. This just needed the local ip address, username and when connected, the password.

I have installed the xtightvncviewer package on Kubuntu but can see no way to use it via a gui. Is there a gui available, I can't find one?

I have tried several variations of commands from the command line and although I appear to be logged in (password accepted), no live desktop :-(

The user allowed access to the server is pi and I am logged into the client as makem so need to use pi@ip address I believe.

Help?

Broadcom BCM4360 802.11ac doesn't see wifi networks

I'm running a fresh install of Ubuntu 15.04 x64 (but had the same issue with 14.10) on a MacBook Retina Pro 12,2, and used Additional Drivers to install the Broadcom driver from bcmwl-kernel-sources.

Most wireless networks aren't visible on Ubuntu. To use open wifi networks I usually have to tether an Android device with a USB cable as they are visible from any Android device. It doesn't appear to be related to security ie WPA or WPA2. Signal strength doesn't appear to be relevant either as an Android wifi hotspot next to my laptop remains invisible.

I haven't found the same problem anywhere else - can anyone suggest what the cause or cure might be?

Some info about my setup:

Wifi connects but I cannot browse anymore on Ubuntu 14.04.3

My home wifi suddenly stopped working (i.e. it connects but I cannot browse anymore) on my linux machine Ubuntu 14.04.3 while it keeps working on Win7. Mobile internet sharing does work on the linux machine. I ran the command mentioned in the sticky post 'Before posting in networking and wireless' when I was connected to my non working wifi and below are the attached results. Any help would be appreciated

[kubuntu] Kubuntu 14.04 - Cabled Connection disappeared, Intermittent WIFI

$

Running Kubuntu 14.04, 64bit, Kernel version 3.13.0-62 (just updated to see if the issue could fix itself), dual booth with Win 8.1

Today after a normal boot coming back from work, I reconnected my laptop to my desk, I noticed my laptop was having a mighty hard time connecting to my wired connection. It would just sit there connecting for a good 20-30 seconds, then spout out 2 notifications, one about the connection being deactivated, the other about "IP configuration being unavaliable". The process would repeat over and over and over again, with the notification tray geting more and more spammed with those two messages over time (and, of course, no connection)

So I hooked it up to my wifi, to begin searching for possible solutions

Someone mentioned wicd network manager being superior to the bundled one. I tried that one too, but the result was exactly the same, so I scrapped it and went back to the default one.

While poking around, I renamed the wired connection from "connection 1" to "home" (might as well, since I never bothered to do it before)... and the connection disappeared. I've tried checking the cable and resetting the wired router, but it simply doesn't see anything attached to the cable port anymore

In addition, I've now noticed that every 5-10 minutes, the WiFi connection will disconnect for a few seconds, and reconnect back after similarly short time

Here's attached the wireless info script:

I'm still relatively new to linux, so please be gentle with me if I've screwed something up.

Thanks!

[UbuntuGnome] Resolution issue using VNC into Vino

$

Hi everyone,

I have recently got Vino working on my Linux server (Ubuntu Gnome), such that I can now successfully connect to my Linux server over LAN from my Mac (OSX) using either Chicken of the VNC or Real VNC.

However, while the connection is successful, the resolution is not. I am unable to see the whole Linux desktop, and this is not something that I can adjust or control from the VNC client.

Specifically: When I log into my Linux machine from my Mac using VNC Viewer, while the "resolution" appears OK, about 80% of the content of the remote desktop is chopped off. You can see what I'm referring to in the screenshot link below. Note - there isn't a way to adjust this from within VNC Viewer application (ie, adjusting the size only adjusts the size of the whole VNC window and scales the content). Further to this (and I'm not sure if it's related), when I plug my server into my old TV screen via HDMI, I have a similar issue where about 50% of the screen is cut off. However, if I open Kodi (the primary use of my server through my TV), the screen is 100% OK. I thought this was just an issue with my old TV as there are no issues if I try my friend's newer TV screen, but since the issue seems similar to what happens when I connect via VNC I thought I'd share. Screenshot of what happens when I make the connection using a VNC viewer: http://postimg.org/image/aqd4vok5x/

Is this a limitation of Vino, or is there something I can try? Please note - I'm new to Linux so any explanation should be beginner-proof!

Thanks!
Ryan
