What triggers/causes eth1 to be used?

$

TLDR:
Laptop has eth1 as wired connection
if i was to ifconfig, it would be eth1, lo, and wlan0
eth1 says last used 4 hours ago, what does it mean last used 4 hours ago? what is the trigger? what causes it to be used? why does restarting or a hard boot the laptop not refresh it?
---------------

Hello,

Total newbie to Ubuntu, I found out today that I have this wired connection 1 apparently it is eth1 (dont have eth0 for some reason) and im on the laptop connected to wifi

Ever since my install on Ubuntu, I never used a cable for anything except an HDMI cable

To connect to my wifi I'm using a usb wifi.

Before I found out that my wired connection 1 was last used/trigged 4 hours ago

I surfed the web, restarted my computer, downloaded unity tweak tool, unplugged/plugged my usb wifi because internet stopped workign for some reason

My problem here is I don't know what trigged it to say "last used 4 hours ago"

I attempt to replicate the trigger....

I restart my computer, nothing changes.

I turn off wifi, nothing changes.

I try unplugging my wifi usb nothing changes.

I am so lost...

I'm super paranoid if someone hjacked my internet or someone stole my info cause I know literally nothing about computers.

Network connectivity loss

I have an Ubuntu guest host on VMware.
Version 14.04.3 LTS, Trusty Tahr

Having an issue with the networking where on boot I am able to ping/connect to other hosts on the LAN. Other hosts on the network are able to connect to this host.
However, a very short time there after it stops working.
If I do an ifdown/ifup same as on boot it starts working then stops after a very short time.

interface config:
auto eht0
iface eth0 inet static
address 255.255.254.0
gateway 172.20.10.1

There is no selinux and iptables is not installed.

I really am stumped here. Any ideas on how this can be fixed?

Ubuntu Live USB and USB WiFi modem

As linux newbie I am desperately trying to test and then install Ubuntu on my PC. I have a simple ZTE MF60 uFi aces point/modem that works perfectly fine with internet access in any windows but not in Live USB Ubuntu. When I try to connect to my WiFi with my WEP2 password in Live USB Ubuntu it keeps asking for it over and over. It won't connect to the wifi. I tried to set up WiFi connection manually but with no success. I searched extensively on internet for proper solutions but there are no specific and clear instructions on how to fix this. Without access to internet I simply can't use Ubuntu.

I am really fed up with windows so I would appreciate any dedicated help. Don't make me go back to the dark side. Tell me what info do you need and I'll post it ASAP.

[ubuntu] Unable to Connect PPTP using 14.04 on VPS Error 734

Hi all,
I cant seem to get my PPTP connection to work. I have already manged an OpenVPN server I'm setting up PPTP purely for convince so friends and family who I am not close enough to setup OpenVPN credentials for. While OpenVPN works just fine however when trying to connect to PPTP I get

Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated.

The messages log doesn't tell me much either

Code:

pppd[12517]: Plugin /usr/lib/pptpd/pptpd-logwtmp.so loaded.
pppd[12517]: pppd 2.4.5 started by <SYSUSER>, uid 0
pppd[12517]: Using interface ppp0

pppd[12517]: Connect time 0.1 minutes.
pppd[12517]: Sent 0 bytes, received 0 bytes.
pppd[12517]: Exit.

I followed this guide https://vpnreviewer.com/how-to-insta...untu-linux-vps

So I've tried both the default and the following pptpd-option configuration

Code:

name pptpd refuse-pap
 refuse-chap
 refuse-mschap
 require-mschap-v2
 require-mppe-128
 ms-dns 8.8.8.8
 #ms-dns 8.8.4.4
 proxyarp
 nodefaultroute
 lock
 nobsdcomp
 mtu 1490
 mru 1490

My chap-secrets is as follows
Code:

<USERNAME> pptpd <PASS> *
Which seems to work because if I deliberately put in the wrong password the log file changes to this:

Code:

pppd[14156]: Plugin /usr/lib/pptpd/pptpd-logwtmp.so loaded.pppd[14156]: pppd 2.4.5 started by <SYSUSER>, uid 0
pppd[14156]: Using interface ppp0

pppd[14156]: Peer <USER> failed CHAP authentication

Thanks for any help in advance!

I am doing a fresh install of a minimal Ubuntu system with MATE desktop environment. When I click on NetworkManager's icon and then a wireless network to connect to, I receive a dialog box that says:

Quote:

Connection failure

Failed to add/activate connection

(32) Insufficient privileges.
I am doing a clean reinstallation of Ubuntu 14.04 with Lubuntu 14.04.1 alternate installer and choose `F4` -> "Install a basic command-line system", then install X, MATE and NetworkManager manually like this:

Quote:

Code:

sudo apt-get install software-properties-common -y
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/ppa -y
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/trusty-mate -y
sudo apt-get install xorg mate-core --no-install-recommends -y
sudo apt-get install network-manager network-manager-gnome --no-install-recommends -y

If that helps, when I install Ubuntu that way, it asks for password upon attaching and unmounting a USB flash drive. Also, when I am creating a shortcut for `shutdown` command, to be able to shut down my computer with a click on an icon, I have to alter permissions for `/sbin/shutdown`:

Quote:

Code:

chmod u+s /sbin/shutdown

Maybe something similar is going on with Wi-Fi and I need to alter some permissions for it to work properly?

[ubuntu] Wi-fi networks disconnected.

Hi, i have been using Ubuntu for some time now and have been able to fix most troubles from existing threads, but not this time.
Mine is a Toshiba Satellite L650 laptop and is dual-boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 14.04. Ubuntu is on a 11 GB partition.
I reinstalled Ubuntu 14.04 a few days back (formatted the partition) and have been experiencing problems connecting to the wifi ever since. Internet works via the ethernet cable.
On clicking the internet bubble on the taskbar it shows "Wi-fi Networks disconnected"
On clicking "Edit connections" it shows the wi-fi network but i'm not able to connect to it.

I have almost no idea about coding in the terminal or networking etc and usually just copy and paste! Would appreciate any help!

[ubuntu] Why does not the Wireless Connection get any Internet access?

I have been carefully reading a few web pages related to this topic before deciding to ask `Ubuntu`, but unfortunately now I have to come out of my hide-out and to ask for some more professional help.

The story goes like this. I have an `Asus X-551 MA Intel Quad-Core Laptop` on which I was usually running `Ubuntu` inside an `Oracle VirtualBox` virtual machine. Somehow, it never ran quick enough and sometimes I had to press a key and to wait for a few seconds until anything happened. I have tried to better configure the virtual machine, to no avail.

Eventually, after a few trial-and-error attempts, I have decided to drop the usage of the virtual machine manager and to run the real thing. What I have done has been to reinstall the `Asus Laptop` with a brand new "`Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64-Bit`" Operating System and to configure it to work as a Wi-Fi HotSpot.

The solution that I have chosen has been to install the "`Ubuntu 15.04 <<Vivid>> for Computers with Less Than Two (2) GigaBytes of Random Access Memory`" Operating System on another `Hewlett-Packard Compaq nx7300 Intel Dual-Core Laptop` and to make it wirelessly connect to the `Asus Windows` laptop. However, whatever I have tried has failed.

The best situation that I have met so far has been that `Ubuntu` wirelessly connects to `Windows`, it says that it is during the course of the connection process ("`Connecting...`"), but I do not have any proof that they are really connected.

A browser such as `Mozilla Firefox` reports that the "`Server is not found`" (Which server?) when the Wi-Fi is set in the Infrastructure mode or it plainly gets stuck in "`Connecting...`" without doing actually anything visible when the Wi-Fi is set in the Ad-Hoc mode.

I have also tried to create the Wi-Fi HotSpot on `Ubuntu` and to make `Windows` wirelessly connect to it. That time again, `Windows` was lost in "`Connecting...`".

I have been trying these tricks for Thirty-Five (35) days in a row and I am really worn-out now. I see that are other questions similar to this one, but the solutions that they have received have already been attempted without any success. This is why I have decided to write this question and maybe somebody has some clues about what is happening and which I am not yet aware about.

Of course, I would be happy to find some troubleshooting command-line tools that show what the `Ubuntu` Wi-Fi is actually doing when it is attempting to connect to `Windows`. Also, I am eager to provide whatever debugging information is needed.

This is a Home Network. The DSL Provider is a Dial-Up Broadband Provider. It allows only one connection at a time.

Currently, I am using a Switch for connecting both Laptops to the Ethernet UTP Cable that goes to the Fibre Optic Device. I am reluctant in purchasing a Wireless Router, since I am not yet fully sure that both the Wireless Chipsets are working.

I have tested the `Hewlett-Packard Laptop` using a "`Microsoft Vista Home Premium 32-Bit`" Operating System prior to the "`Ubuntu`" installation. I was very happy then that `Vista` did connect to the other `Windows`, but somehow I missed opening a web page in `Vista`, so I guess it is the same situation. I guess I was too happy that the wireless connection appeared to be working.

Both Laptops are connected also with a Ethernet UTP Cable towards the Switch. Pinging might be affected by these cables.

I remember being thoroughly happy that I have copied a very large file while I was running "`Vista`", but I can imagine that "`Vista`" might have decided on its own that - due to the size of the transfer - it was better to use the Wires rather than the Wireless Connection.

With the Wires on, with `Windows 10` connected to the DSL Provider and with `Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid` wirelessly connected to `Windows 10`, I get the following results. Please let me know if you want other permutations and combinations.

On `Windows 10`, I have a `Cygwin 64-Bit` Software Installation. This is what it reports:

Mihai@Sahaj ~
$ uname -a
CYGWIN_NT-10.0 Sahaj 2.1.0(0.287/5/3) 2015-07-14 21:28 x86_64 Cygwin

This is what I get in an `Ubuntu` Terminal Window:

varada@Ubuntu:~$ ping Sahaj
PING Sahaj.mshome.net (192.168.137.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from Sahaj.mshome.net (192.168.137.1): icmp_seq=1 ttl=128 time=2.01 ms
64 bytes from Sahaj.mshome.net (192.168.137.1): icmp_seq=2 ttl=128 time=2.12 ms
64 bytes from Sahaj.mshome.net (192.168.137.1): icmp_seq=3 ttl=128 time=2.10 ms

3 packets transmitted, 3 received, 0% packet loss, time 2002ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 2.013/2.081/2.125/0.048 ms

Yes, this is with the Wires on. Of course, I can try with the Wires off, but eventually I also want to use them. For Large Data Transfers I prefer to use them. I do not know yet if `Ubuntu` has Embedded Software Network Algorithms that would decide which Physical Medium to use when transferring data - as it appeared to be happening in the case of the `Vista` Software Installation.

As described before, the two Laptops are on the same network.

It appears that `Windows 10` automatically sets up its `Windows Firewall` upon its Software Installation.

Of course, I can disable it completely, but eventually I would need it on. I would require your help in configuring it for granting `Ubuntu`'s Wireless Connection.

I have saved Twenty-Two (22) Wireless Links in an "`Ubuntu`" Bookmarks Folder:

**Test 1.** I have disconnected the DSL Provider in `Ubuntu` with the `poff` command and then connected `Windows` with a `Digi.BAT` File. `Ubuntu` has automatically and wirelessly connected itself to the `Windows10` Wi-Fi HotSpot. Afterwards, I have first disabled the `Microsoft Windows Firewall` on the _Private networks_. This category includes the `Windows10` Wi-Fi HotSpot and the `Network 3` Network that might be the Local Area Network created between the Switch and the two Laptops. `Google Chrome` has reported the "`ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE`" error while attempting to connect to the `https://mail.google.com/` Internet address.

**Test 2.** I have disabled the `Microsoft Windows Firewall` also on the _Guest or public networks_. This category included only one `Digi 7` network. `Google Chrome` has reported the "`ERR_QUIC_PROTOCOL_ERROR`" error while attempting to connect to the `https://mail.google.com/` Internet address.

**Test 3.** I have removed the Wire from `Ubuntu`. In a Command Line Terminal Window, the `ping` command has reported the following lines:

varada@Ubuntu:~$ ping Sahaj
PING Sahaj.mshome.net (192.168.137.1) 56(84) bytes of data.

4 packets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 3000ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 1.905/2.041/2.120/0.087 ms

Another attempt from `Google Chrome` to connect to the `https://mail.google.com/` Internet address has led to an `ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT` error.

**Test 4.** I forgot to replug the Wire in `Ubuntu` and run a `pon dsl-provider` command in order to reconnect it to the DSL Provider, obviously. An attempt to load the `http://askubuntu.com/questions/666392/why-does-not-the-wireless-connection-get-any-internet-access` Web Page inside the `Google Chrome` Web Browser has led this time to the `ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED` error.

What is interesting is that, in order to connect `Ubuntu` to the DSL-Provider, I had to disconnect `Windows 10` from the DSL-Provider, after which the `Microsoft Windows Firewall` has shown another `Digi 7` active public network in its list. The `7` digit has not been chosen at random; actually, the `Microsoft Windows` Operating System has kept on incrementing its number since the first attempt to create a `Digi` Internet connection, through the `Digi 2`, `Digi 3`, and until the current `Digi 7`, while I was continually removing it and recreating it in order to configure the Wi-Fi HotSpot.

**Test 5.** Another attempt to load the `http://askubuntu.com/questions/666392/why-does-not-the-wireless-connection-get-any-internet-access` Web Page inside the `Google Chrome` Web Browser after replugging the Wire in `Ubuntu` has led to the same `ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED` error.

**Test 6.** I have disconnected and then reconnected `Ubuntu` from the DSL Provider with the following commands:

varada@Ubuntu:~$ poff
varada@Ubuntu:~$ pon dsl-provider
Plugin rp-pppoe.so loaded.

This time, the `http://askubuntu.com/questions/666392/why-does-not-the-wireless-connection-get-any-internet-access` Web Page did get loaded correctly within the `Google Chrome` Web Browser. However, this has been done through the direct wired connection to the DSL Provider and not through the Wireless Connection to the `Windows10` Wi-Fi HotSpot.

**Test 7.** `Windows 10` is not yet turned on. I am running the `pon dsl-provider` and the `iwconfig` commands inside an `Ubuntu` Command Line Terminal Window:

varada@Ubuntu:~$ pon dsl-provider
Plugin rp-pppoe.so loaded.
varada@Ubuntu:~$ iwconfig
ppp0 no wireless extensions.

Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=20 dBm
Retry short limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Power Management:off

lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

I am disconnecting `Ubuntu` from the DSL Provider with the `poff` command. Then, I am turning `Windows 10` on. It creates its own `Windows10` Wi-Fi HotSpot and `Ubuntu` automatically gets connected to it. I am running the `iwconfig` command inside the same `Ubuntu` Command Line Terminal Window:

varada@Ubuntu:~$ poff
varada@Ubuntu:~$ iwconfig
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"Windows10"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: 46:27:1E:83:D9:C7

lo no wireless extensions.

`Google Chrome` reports the "`ERR_QUIC_PROTOCOL_ERROR`" error while attempting to connect to the `https://mail.google.com/` Internet address.

These outputs do not mean much to me. Maybe they are helpful for the readers.

Also, I was looking for a command that might inspect what is happening after `Ubuntu` automatically gets connected to `Windows 10`. Is there any? I mean, besides the Web Browsers such as `Mozilla Firefox` and `Google Chrome`. Their diagnostic information does not present much interesting detail.

For instance, in the "Details" area of information for the `ERR_QUIC_PROTOCOL_ERROR` `Google Chrome` error it was explained that the `https://mail.google.com` Web Page must have been moved, which is not true. I have just opened it after directly and wiredly connecting to the DSL Provider and it is working just fine. There must be some other troubleshooting tools out there.

In case there might be some problems from within the `Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64-Bit` Operating System Side, here is how I am usually connecting to the DSL Provider from within it and how it is automatically creating the Wi-Fi HotSpot.

I am using a `Microsoft Disk Operating System` Batch File that I have called as `Digi.BAT`. Of course, I have desired that it automatically gets started upon the Operating System Start-Up. Somehow, that never happens.

The Short-Cuts that are placed inside the `Startup` Menus (both for `All Users` and for the current user) do not get started upon the Operating System Start-Up, for daunting reasons that are completely baffling me.

Therefore, I have decided to simply give up the usage of both the `Startup` Menus and to use the Old and Safe Manual Double-Click upon a Desktop Short-Cut that is pointing towards the Batch File, each time I need to connect to the DSL Provider.

This is what it is doing:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>C:\Windows\SysWOW64\RASDial.ex e Digi <UserName> <PassWord>

Connecting to Digi...

The user key passphrase of the hosted network has been successfully changed.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>netsh wlan start hostednetwork
The hosted network started.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>PAUSE
Press any key to continue . . .

Some more pieces of information from the `Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64-Bit` Operating System World.

Inside the "_Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Network and Sharing Center_" Window, the following pieces of information are displayed:

View your basic network information and set up connections

View your active networks

Digi 7 Access type: Internet
Public network Connections: Digi

Windows10 Access type: Internet
Private network HomeGroup: Ready to create
Connections: Local Area Connection* 13

Network 3 Access type: No Internet access
Private Network HomeGroup: Ready to create
Connections: Ethernet

**Digi 7** is the Seventh (7th) Version of the Wired Connection to the DSL Provider. It has Internet access and it is feeding **Windows10** bits and crumbles of it. Or at least it should be. I do not know yet how to test this aspect.

**Windows10** is the Wi-Fi HotSpot. It should have Internet access obtained from the above-mentioned DSL Provider Connection. It can also create a HomeGroup, but I do not know yet if that would be helpful for the `Ubuntu` World. Would it be?

**Network 3** should be the Local Area Network created by the Loop formed by the Switch and the Two (2) Laptops, Wired between themselves with Ethernet Wires. This one appears not to have Internet access and I am not interested in it having any. I just want to minimize the load on the Wireless Internet Connection that hopefully will be running soon also on `Ubuntu` and to use this Wired Connection for Large Data Transfers.

This is kind of it, regarding the loads of information that I am able to paste here from the Two (2) Worlds of `Windows 10` and `Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid`. Of course, I can go on pasting pieces of information from `Properties` Windows and from other places, but I prefer to wait for some requests. I am kind of done with investigating. This has extended with a few days the initial investigation period of Thirty-Five (35) Continuous Days.

One more thing, from within the `Ubuntu` World. I just want to make sure that there is nothing fishy among the Wi-Fi Connection Settings. These are the details of the Wireless Connection in `Ubuntu`:

`Ubuntu` Proxy Settings.

_Mozilla Firefox_

Just to make sure, I have changed the default setting from `Use system proxy settings` to `No proxy`, to no avail. `Mozilla Firefox` continues to report the following error message:

Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at start.ubuntu.com.

Check the address for typing errors such as ww.example.com instead of www.example.com
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

_Google Chrome_

`Google Chrome` is trickier, as usual. He just will not give up easily. While attempting to alter the Proxy Settings, it has opened the `chrome://linux-proxy-config/` Web Page with the following pieces of information:

When running Google Chrome under a supported desktop environment, the system proxy settings will be used. However, either your system is not supported or there was a problem launching your system configuration.

But you can still configure via the command line. Please see man google-chrome-stable for more information on flags and environment variables.

While going towards the Command Line Terminal Window, I have not had any success there, either. Help does not seem to come out easily:

varada@Ubuntu:~$ /usr/bin/google-chrome-stable --help
No manual entry for google-chrome-stable
See 'man 7 undocumented' for help when manual pages are not available.

What is interesting is that `Google Chrome` keeps on shuffling its error codes when it is reporting an error. This time, it has presented the following error to the user, when the `https://mail.google.com/mail/` Web Page has been attempted to be opened:

This webpage is not available

ERR_NAME_RESOLUTION_FAILED
Hide details
The webpage at https://mail.google.com/mail/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

Anyway, `Mozilla Firefox` has already proven that there is no proxy set up. I have never ever set up a proxy on this machine in `Ubuntu`. This is a fresh installation, done from a `Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid` Digital Versatile Disk.

Also, I was attempting to understand Ads' logic in their request to disable a firewall only on the `Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64-Bit` machine.

Indeed, logically `Ubuntu` needs to access `Windows'` ethereal space, so it needs to cross any firewalls that `Windows` is maintaining. Now, the `Microsoft Windows Firewall` is completely disabled, on all the networks.

What if there is a need also to disable some firewalls inside the `Ubuntu` World? I have never ever set up any firewalls on this machine in `Ubuntu`. Are there any firewalls installed in `Ubuntu` by default that have to be disabled, also?

Some debugging tips:

[all variants] And again the Netgear AC1200 Dual Band Wi-Fi USB 3.0 Adapter

Hi,

yesterday i bought an Netgear AC1200 Dual Band Wi-Fi USB 3.0 Adapter that works pretty cool on windows boxes up from XP to 10 (tested by my self today) , but i personally wanted to use it on a linux system, preferable on a kubuntu system with the latest 4.2 stable kernel. Its a really powerful piece of hardware due to its strong antenna and with a ac capable router it extended my working range in our home. So far i am happy with it. I sadly found out, that there is no current working linux kernel module for it available and digging in the web didnt reveal some working driver for it. Trying to use some windows xp driver with ndiswrapper wasnt successful either (driver imports unknown symbols for the ndiswrapper). Extracting the right device drivers from the windows installer was pretty painful too. So i started to look for (older) similar (windows) drivers but they all link to kernel library functions that could not be handled by the ndiswrapper. BTW i am aware of this post and all the links inside it here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...Netgear+AC1200

But it looks like that MediaTek indeed did release some open source code for the chipset[/SIZE] MT7612U [SIZE=2]of that device:

http://www.mediatek.com/en/downloads...loads/mt7612u/

And here comes the question: How do i compile this into a working, lodable ko module? Where to start?

To whom it may concern:

i have 64bit 14.04.1 ubuntu server.

OpenSSH_6.6.1, OpenSSL 1.0.1f 6 Jan 2014

what i am trying to do is to allow 3 users to login through ssh .

for which i put

AllowUsers user1 user2 user3

it's working fine.

and 2 can log in using password and 1 user can only login using ssh key:

Match user user3
PasswordAuthentication no

I also tried

PasswordAuthentication no
Match user !user3
PasswordAuthentication yes

And

Match user user3
PasswordAuthentication no
Match user otherusers
PasswordAuthentication yes

Once I added that, it would disable password login for all users.

any help is appreciated.

[ubuntu] 14.04 Wireless Internet not working/working poorly

I'm on a brand new Asus laptop with Ubuntu 14.04. Wired internet works fine, and the internet on the Windows side looks fine as well.

Trying to connect to a network--any network--in ubuntu now only results in one of the following scenarios:
-Can't connect at all.
-Can connect, but browsers stall when loading web pages.
-Can connect and load pages, but only for three or four minutes, then it either disconnects or web pages begin to stall.
-Can connect and load some pages, but others stall. This usually also disconnects or stops working entirely after three minutes.

I've tried everything I've found on ubuntu forums as well as everything on this page: http://itsfoss.com/speed-up-slow-wif...ection-ubuntu/ with no success.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Forgive me if I don't respond quickly, but I can't rely on my connection.

[UbuntuGnome] Using a router with a jetpack with Ubuntu 14.04

$

I am not sure I am in the right forum. If not please point me towards the right one. I live full time in an motor home. I am presently running a HP Pavilion g7-2069wm Notebook PC, 6gb ram, Ubuntu 14.04. I connect to the internet through my Verizion MIFI4510 wireless jetpack or sometimes through wireless in campgrounds. I want to setup a wireless network in my motor home with a wireless security camera, a printer and another ubuntu computer. I have been told that I need a router to do this. Usually routers connect to a modem with a cable but I would rather connect the router to the internet wirelessly, if possible. Can this be done and how? Does this require a special type of router? If so what type? I am new to networking so I might be asking some dumb sounding questions. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

[ubuntu] Change wireless network mode

Hello, guys.
I need to change the wireless mode of my network interface from 802.11bgn to 802.11b. The only thing I've found is the result of executing command "lshw".

Broadcom BCM4322 Wireless won't connect. Already ready previous threads

I am on a new install of Ubuntu 15.04 on a Macbook Pro with PCID 14e4:432b for Broadcom.

I have installed and tried both firmware-b43-installer, bcmwl-kernel-source, and fwcutter making sure to purge/remove the previous before trying the next.

I've read and tried:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/55868...reless-drivers
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2214110

and many others.

I have played around with modprobe both adding and # out the current bcm module with no success.

Do you have any suggestions for me at the moment? It shows that I am using b43-pci-bridge at the moment which doesn't sound like the firmware-b43 installer I got?

I am using Synaptic to manage my packages. I currently uninstalled firmware-b43-installer and fwcutter and going back in a circle to what I had originally, the bcmwl-kernel-source. Tried the modprobe -r wl and modprobe wl with sudo and what not but nothing is working.

rfkill shows everything is 'no' and my wlan does indeed show up in iwconfig and many other menus

I would appreciate any help. Thanks

[ubuntu] Wifi connection is weak and drops off - Quallcom Atheros AR9485 on Asus S400CA

Wifi connection on my Asus S400 with Quallcom Atheros AR9485 wifi card is very weak. Whenever I try to browse the web it almost immediately drops off. On a MacBook and other laptops I have full-strength connection, but this laptop is showing 2 out of 5 bars.

Sometimes the wifi icon shows that I'm connected, but pings don't go through and web pages are not accessible.

I tried to change aux and main wires on my wifi card, different hacks on the web, but nothing seem to help so far. When I have my wifi disconnected I'm trying to bring it back up with the following script:

Code:

Should I change wifi card or there's a problem with my config? I'm attaching dmesg and /var/log/syslog logs captured around the time when problem occured.

Any suggestions to tackle this problem are appreciated!

Hello, I am very new to Ubuntu and I have been trying to connect to the internet using wireless, but every time I try to use Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver source from bcmwl-kernel it does nothing after I push apply changes. The first time I tried to do it the loading froze. Any help would be appreciated (:

[ubuntu] DEXP Aquilon O103 Wi-fi hard blockerd

Hi all!
I'm using All-in-One PC Dexp Aquilon O103 (it's a local brand and seems to be unknown worldwire). It seems that all hardware used in my AIO PC is taken from the same named Dexp Aquilon O103 LAPTOP.
I believe it the case why built-in Realtek RTL8188EE Wi-Fi adapter is hard blocked under Ubuntu 14.04 LTS x32 Desktop.
The package of my AIO PC doesn't include keyboard, and there are also no hard-switch on the AIO PC.
Here is what rfkill says:
Code:

guestaccess@GuestAccess-1:~$ rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
          Soft blocked: no
          Hard blocked: yes

Ubuntu is installed side-by-side with "windows 7 starter" and wireless works well under windows. It's also interesting that after booting windows and then rebooting to ubuntu, wireless adapter becomes unblocked and works well... But next time, I'm booting Ubuntu I get hard block again.

Here is some additional info:

[ubuntu_mate] unable to connect to Windows 10 share from Ubuntu

$

I'm not 100% sure if this is a Windows or an Ubuntu issue, so if this is in the wrong location, my apologies.

Background of the problem:
I have a Windows 10 environment (3 Windows 10 machines with user-level shares to the same username@outlook.com) with a Ubuntu Mate 15.04 desktop that is acting as a LAMP to host my media server. The Ubuntu system has not USB ports and the media files are stored on an external USB drive shared by one of the Windows 10 machines. I would attach to the share with:
sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.1.68/Media /mnt/Media -o username=username@outlook.com,password=password

The username is the Microsoft username/password and this worked until the machine that the external drive was attached to died.

I moved the external USB drive to one of the other machines, went into the folder properties, took ownership on the new machines and recreated the share. I adjusted the IP address accordingly and started getting:
Mount://192.168.1.73/Media: can't Read SuperBlock

I read what I could find and installed the cifs-utils, and this seemed to help a little bit, but now I get:
Mount error(5): Input/output error
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)

I read and tried the following:
sudo mount.cifs //192.168.1.73/Media /mnt/Media --verbose -o username=username@outlook.com,password=password
The output of this is:
mount.cifs kernel mount options: ip=192.168.1.73,unc=\\192.168.1.73\Media,user=username@outlook.com,pass=********
mount error(5): Input/output error

Help:
I'll admit I'm over my head here, and while I could probably rebuild the Linux box easily enough, I won't learn that way. Also I'm not convinced that it is the problem, or at least the entire problem. I can access \\192.168.1.73\Media from the other Windows 10 machine (leading me to think this isn't a Windows problem) and here's the odd part, I can open Caja (Mate's file manager) and when I select Browse Networks, without drilling down to Windows Networks, I can see the Windows computers listed. If I double-click on any of the machines (all have a simple share) I get the expected login prompt, but NONE will let me login, it just returns back to the login prompt.

Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

Can you help me please?
I´m new user of Lubuntu 15.04 (old user of Windows XP). Can you explain it step by step?

Lubuntu OS doesn´t recognize me Ralink usb wifi RT3070 (don´t work)
I have tested various forms but without success...

1) Download Linux driver from mediatek.com "RT8070/ RT3070/ RT3370/ RT3572/ RT5370/ RT5372/ RT5572 USB USB"

2) Decompress in desktop (DPO_RT5572_LinuxSTA_2.6.1.3_20121022.tar.bz2)
Delete the compressed archive. Leave only the unzipped folder on the desktop (without tar.bz2)

3) Open a terminal from previous folder,
Quote:

sudo apt-get install
It appears the following:
Quote:

Reading package lists ... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information ... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded
The program isn´t installed...

I have also tried without success:
Quote:

./configure
==> No such file or directory
Quote:

make
==> Try: sudo apt-get install <selected package>
Quote:

make install
==> command not found

Thanks! Regards.

[lubuntu] NetworkManager starting/stopping

I've been trying to start/stop and check NetworkManager status in Trusty using the old fashion /etc/init.d route and also upstart, to my surprise neither is working: although I can see a traditional network-manager.conf script in /etc/init containing the usual lines
Code:

start on (local-filesystems          and started dbus          and static-network-up) stop on stopping dbus
there is no correspondent script in /etc/init.d, whilst the upstart command sudo NetworkManager status returns this
Code:

NetworkManager is already running (pid 646)
so what process is actually in control of NetworkManager ?
