[ubuntu] (15.04) Wifi connected to home router, but internet isn't connecting

So I just put 15.04 on my computer, and the Wifi seems to be connecting to the router but there is no internet connection. I'll post many commands I have run following other questions on this site. Every command here ran fine except for sudo dhclient wlan0, which after Enter is hit just returns an empty line until I have to Ctrl + C out of it (not blank after it asks password, an empty line after sudo password is entered). Here is the information on my machine and network:

Reddit thread here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comm..._but_internet/

Please help me, guys. I really need this to work. I just got laid off and just want to get back to programming, and I'm tired of the sleepless nights that Ubuntu is giving me. I will constantly be refreshing the page on all forums linked. Please help. Thank you.

WLan slow and unstable (Broadcom Chipset, Ubuntu 15.04)

Hey folks,

I've got major problems with my WLan connection. It does give me download speeds of up to 3MB/s, but sometimes its painfully slow at just a few KB. It also tends to crash, especially when I use it a lot. Reconnecting the WLan usually fixes it, but downloads in progress won't continue anyways. It's a major pain in the ass since it prevents me from installing any bigger updates.
I'm running Ubuntu 15.04 on an Acer Aspire E-112, chipset apparently is a Broadcom BCM43142 802.11b/g/n. Right now I'm using the proprietary STA drivers from bcmwl-kernel-source. According to the Broadcom-guide this one should be fine from 14.04 LTS and higher, but I'm still having trouble.

Here are my scripts results:

Anyone got any further ideas on this? Help would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Network connection gone

I use Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on a Dell Optiplex desktop.
Up until recently I've been connected to the Internet via a hard-wired connection directly to my NETGEAR router.
My other PC, also connected by hard wire, is running Windows 8.1.

Two days ago, my Ubuntu PC became disconnected from the network.

It is listed in the router genie among the "allowed devices not currently connected to the network." For that reason, I can no longer "map the network path" because the IP address is no longer assigned.

Somewhere between the ethernet port on the Optiplex, through the cable, to the router, there is a problem. I've replaced the wire with a brand new one with no change. I've moved the wires throughout all the LAN ports on the router. All of them work with the cable to the Windows machine, but none of them work with the cable from the Ubuntu device.

NETGEAR technical support insists that this is an Ubuntu/Ethernet issue.

Any help geared toward a total Ubuntu neophyte would be greatly appreciated.

Unable to connect to WPA/WPA2 SSID

Bit odd this one. I´m new to Linux but fairly computer savvy. I recently loaded Lubuntu onto my old Toshiba Satellite and everything seems to work fine except I cannot connect to my Home SSID which features WAP security. I can connect to any unsecured network, so I don´t believe it´s my PCMCIA WiFi card.

When I try to connect to my Home SSID I get ¨Requesting a wireless network address from (my home SSID)¨ until it times out and defaults to an unsecured network.

Anyone care to point me in the right direction or tell me what screen dumps to print that might help?

[ubuntu] Can't get gigabit to work in 14.04 LTS.

I am struggling to get my onboard NIC to work at 1000BaseT on 14.04 LTS. have some memory that it worked in the dim and distant past on this machine but It's been on a 10/100 switch since before this install so it likely has never behaved on 14.04. If I run "ethtool eth0" it reports 1000 Mbps supported but not advertised, so I thought it would simply be a case of turning that on, I was wrong. When I run "sudo ethtool -s eth0 advertise 0x2f" the connection drops. If I run "ethtool eth0" again is reports that 1000baseT/Full is now advertised but the link never comes up. About 30 seconds later the link comes back (NetworkManager messing around?) but ethtool now reports the original values. Trying to force it to 1000 Mbps gives the message "Cannot advertise speed 1000". A bit of googling doesn't throw up anything with quite these symptoms, just people who have 1000BaseT advertised but not working.

I am using a cable and a switch port that I am confident are ok, they work fine on another device. Any suggestions?

Hi,

I am posting this thread after trying the solutions already provided in the forum but it does not work for me.

1. Installed ubuntu 14.04 LTS version on Dell Latitude E6420 with a broadcom wifi devicie BCM43228
2. After install I went to system settings >> software and updates and additional drivers and selected the proprietary driver from bcmwl-kernel-source
3. As soon as the install was done then the wifi was enabled and I was able to connect
4. How ever when I shutdown and start the system wifi destinations are not being shown anymore
5. I also tried manually installing the driver using the following steps

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic
sudo apt-get install --reinstall bcmwl-kernel-source

reboot and no luck

tried also install of broadcom-sta-common

still no wifi destinations are shown.

what exactly am I doing wrong?

[ubuntu] installing/downloading linux-backports-modules-karmic for wireless connection

Hello,

I am new to ubuntu (14.04) and my wlan does not work. I have an Intel Ultimate-N 6300 wlan card and I read here

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ha...workCardsIntel

that I have to install linux-backports-modules-karmic to make my wlan work. Unfortunately the link given in the comments section for the thread to do so does not work (error 404). Searching for this package on my own I found

https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/WLAN/lin...kports-modules

but the description there does not work. I get the error:

E: Unable to locate package linux-backports-modules-cw-3.6-trusty--generic
E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'linux-backports-modules-cw-3.6-trusty--generic'

Can anyone help me to install this package please?

P.S. I am new to this forum so please feel free to correct me.

I bought a new HP 360x convertible 2 in 1 and the wireless is not working and no network is discovered on linux.
The wireless is Intel Corporation Wireless 3160 (re 83) with bluetooth.
I tried different distributions and releases, I switched the bluetooth off and rebooted, I upgraded the kernel to version 4.0, I tried different solutions suggested on the internet, but nothing work.

The ethernet is working but the wireless is not.

Any help please...

Hello all,

I was playing Ryzom and my connection was unstable but suddenly the wifi disconnected and since then I cannot get it connect it back.
I have tried some commands I found at many forums but I am afraid that I messed up everything.
I am new and promising at unix systems but at the moment I am desperate.

WiFi doesn't reconnect after disconnect

Initially, I thought I had the sleep/hibernate bug, but those solutions didn't seem to work. In addition, I noticed one day my router went out briefly, and my Dell m4800 refused to reconnect when the router came back on. So any time I drop a WiFi connection, it shows as reconnected, but there is no internet access at all.

Pertinent info typically requested in other threads that I've seen:

[lubuntu] WiFi Problem: "Requesting Network Address..." loop and disconnect

Hello,

I would like to have your opinion on this problem:
I have installed Lubuntu 15.04 on an old Benq Joybook A33e and the WiFi can not connect to the Networks.
The Wifi is enabled and i can see all the networks available. But when I set a connection with the password to access to my router (or an android shared connection), it loops a few minutes on "Requesting Network Address..." and it fails.

The OS is up to date, i really dont know what to do now.

Here are my wireless info :

Slow Network Transfers

I have a 5e network with a file server and a client where I am only getting around 10 MB/s for file transfers. What am I doing wrong?
Running ubuntu 14.04 on both machines.

[ubuntu] Using ndiswrapper in Ubuntu 14.04, broken after reboot. Module Verification Failed?

Hi, I'm using ndiswrapper to run a Windows driver for my wireless card. I had it working (Installed from the Software Center, and ran using the GUI) and I could connect to wireless networks using the Windows driver; however, after the first reboot, I'm not even able to see any wireless networks anymore.

I've I updated my system and produced the wireless info log below, but I also found this in the system log:

Code:

ndiswrapper: module verification failed: signature and/or  required key missing - tainting kernel
And I'm pretty sure that that is my main problem, but I'm not sure how to fix that. Any clues on what to do next?

Ubuntu 14.04 installed on Thinkcentre m53. Bluetooth seems to work - able to turn off and on - but does not detect devices. The hardware is default, preinstalled, no added usb. This is a dual boot with Windows 7; Bluetooth works in Windows.

Wireless RT8723be Stopped working after 12_04 to 14_04 upgrade

Hello there,

I recently upgraded from 12_04 LTS to 14_04 LTS trusty. Unfortunately in doing so a number of things stopped working including wireless. I think this is the drivers for my Realtek wireless RTL8723be.

Code:

matthew@matt-linux-hp-355-g2:~$ lspci | grep Network
05:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8723BE PCIe Wireless Network Adapter

When I am booting using the new 3.13.x kernel then the wireless does not work, but wired network continues work.

Code:

matthew@matt-linux-hp-355-g2:~$ lspci -nn

"Interestingly" (?) when I boot into the 3.11.x kernel then the wireless works

In preparing to post to the forum and run the wireless-info script I ran

Code:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

and on restart i now get a kernel panic error after a line entry referring to the RTL wireless card. Which feels like a step forwards as the driver may now being loaded, but a step back as I now cannot boot into Ubuntu, only the recovery mode for this kernel.

This thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2245876 looks like it contains some similar helpful for a different kernel. But I am now getting to the limit of any 'expertise' that I would not ever have claimed to have. And added to the inability to boot I am nervous of going further. Could you point me towards the right steps to take to move forwards, please.

Regards

Matthew

[xubuntu] Desktop Sharing

I have some Xubuntu 15.04 machines that I want to access from different computers on my LAN.
I installed Desktop Sharing from Software Center on the Xubuntu 15.04 machines and to get the Remote Desktop Preferences
I issued following command - a window with Remote Desktop Preferences popped-up but also some warnings:

$ vino-preferences
Gtk-Message: GtkDialog mapped without a transient parent. This is discouraged.

(vino-preferences:15349): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_entry_set_text: assertion 'text != NULL' failed

What does the warnings mean ?

WiFi not working - 15.04 - Broadcom BCM4313 [14e4:4727] (rev 01)

I will first start by describing my problem: I have a 2 WiFis that I want to use on Ubuntu, they first worked and then after a few days they stopped stopped working. I tried reinstalling the machine, with no luck. I swapped the modem with another one of the same model and after that it again worked but only for a few days until now, when it has again stopped working.
I tried searching for my answer and found there could be a driver problem.
My WiFi Card is: Broadcom BCM4314 802.11bgn Wireless Network Adapter [14e4:4727] (rev 01)
I have gone through the thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2232939
But the problem there was, like the #7 said, it does not work with the 'b43' driver. But I could not find the "brcmsmac" driver either. I tried installing 'wl', 'wl/brcm80211' and 'bcmwl-kernel-source' (reinstall) none of them helped me see my WiFi's SSID in the list of available networks. Though, I am not sure that the method I followed, i.e. The command I typed were 100% correct. So I could try again, the commands you want me to, to install the same drivers again.
Also looked at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...Driver/bcm43xx, but could not find any driver as such for "4727"
And I started with, and was basically trying to follow the steps given at http://askubuntu.com/a/60395/326313 , it originally asks me to install the same driver that WAS there by default. And even if I redo it, it does not work. So I tried variations of the method given there, with the foresaid drivers to try and replace them.
I can let you know the outputs of any command you tell me, and I would like to mention that I am new to Ubuntu.

[lubuntu] Wireless network always asking to unlock keyring

$

I've deleted the old "default" (as in: my own home network) wi-fi connection on my laptop and added a new one, with a new WPA password: now everytime I try to connect I'm asked to unlock the default keyring password, and as a matter of fact I can see that the WPA password is now stored in this keyring.
But this never happened with the previous connection, I just used to click the network name in the nm applet cascade menu and it would connect.

I'm almost sure that all parameters (password aside) are the same between these two connections, any ideas on why this is happening?

How did I manage to skip this authentication step with my previous connection?

Is it maybe advisable to leave things as they are now ?
