[SOLVED] Ubuntu 16.04 not showing/connecting to WiFi

$

Hi everybody, I just installed Ubuntu 16.04 on my laptop, and the Wi-Fi is not working.

Specifically, the WiFi signal seems to be weak, since in Settings->Network all the Wi-Fi networks are indicated as "out of range" (my version is actually in italian, so I'm translating....) , but I have a dual boot and in Windows10 everything works perfectly.
I looked on the forum, and I saw that some people with my network adapter (RTL8723BE PCIe Wireless Network Adapter) had the same problem and were suggested to update the drivers...however, I thought it might be better to run the Wi-Fi-info script, and ask for your sugestion before doing anything

Code:

########## wireless info START ##########

Network interface card

Hello everyone I have a question and was hoping you could shed some light on it

I upgraded my network to 200 mbps I was having some issues with some of my machines being able to reach that 200 mbps download, upload was always consistent around 17.45, so the bright house tech support says

The machine I'm having issues with is a Dell desktop, after doing a speed test it would only reach about 120 to 130 mbps. I had 2 techs come out to the house that couldn't tell me what was wrong

Bottom line is I was told that particular machine network interface card had a maximum of 100 mbps output

My question is how would I confirm this, I'm only using Linux is there anyway for me to see if this is correct using the command line?

They told me that machine can only reach 100 mbps or less because that was the maximum but this machine is reaching around 120 to 130, so that leads me to believe someone is not telling me the correct information

I know it might be better to just look up the make and model to find out what the specs are for that NIC

Thanks so much

[ubuntu] Network manager won't work at all after resume incident

Had a issue where network card turned itself completely off after resuming from suspend, which was solved by turning it off and then on from BIOS.

However, ever since the incident network manager won't work with wireless, cable is okay. As I boot and log in, network manager connects to wireless network then immediately disconnect and the applet leaves a "device not ready" in grey. Wireless is working fine with Wicd if I remove network manager, but anyway I need network manager for vpn.

So, basically - it connects, disconnect and then applet shows "device not ready" whereas I need to reboot afterwards. Restarting network manager service won't do it.

How do I troubleshoot it? Suggestions?

I'm facing this issue where the internet through the wifi drops randomly for 2 - 3 minutes while on Ubuntu. The wifi signal is always full and connected but the internet in my browser says no internet. Now this works perfectly on Windows and there are no drops at all which leads me to believe this is a driver issue.

[ubuntu] Firewall/Port Forwarding Issue

Hello. I am in very weird situation.

So I am using ubuntu webserver(192.168.0.1 listening on port 80), and another small server for my side rails app project server.(192.168.0.4 also listening port 80)

I was messing around with iptables, but set everything back to how it was before.

now when i enter the ip address on the web browser, the traffic gets forwarded from the webserver to teh rails app project server,
so the contents from the project server pops up on the browser not the contents of the original webserver.

even when i enter the domain name of webserver 192.168.0.1, "example.com" to the address bar and try to access, still same thing, it gets forwarded to project server. =(

I am not familiar with ubuntu firewall nor iptables. does anyone have idea what is gonig on with my server?

[SOLVED] Idiot renamed a network interface to 'dev' and won't connect to wifi now.

Hello,

Thanks for viewing my post, this is my first post up here and actually one of my first times using linux so im a total dumb@** with this.

Anyways, to the nitty gritty:

While messing around with a few vm's, I accidentally ran this command in my host's terminal:

Code:

sudo ip link set name dev wlp5s0
It looks like it renamed my internal wifi card to "dev"
Additionally, i can see wifi networks, but cannot connect to them. (afraid to reboot)

originally, running an 'ip addr' would output this:

Code:

1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN group default qlen 1    link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
    inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo
      valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
    inet6 ::1/128 scope host

3: wlp5s0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state UP group default qlen 1000

    inet6 fe80::157d:700b:f311:91df/64 scope link

Now this is the output:

Code:

I am not sure how to fix this, i am trying to avoid reinstalling my distro every single time i have a problem. I would much rather learn from experience and fixing problems on my own. Thank you in advance for any help provided. It is very appreciated.

p.s. i know im totally dumb for doing that. I'm sure its a first running a command in the wrong machine.

I am having an issue using transmission-gtk. It was working fine and I don't really know why it stopped, I didn't do any updating or anything. I am running xubuntu 14.04. Anyway, when I try to run transmission from the app menu nothing happens, so then I try to run it from the command line and this is the error returned.
Code:

Can anyone help me with this, i've googled trying to find a solution but I can't find any solutions.

[ubuntu] delay boot until network is up?

I'm not sure what I did, but I broke it. I installed a new router this weekend. In setting it up, I had to remove the network profile for the old router (long story) form my Ubuntu 16.04LTS laptop. I am auto-mouting a couple of network attached hard drives via fstab. It worked fine up until now. I can still mount the drives from the command line, but they are not auto-mounting at boot. I THINK it's because the system is booting up past fstab before the network is fully available. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thank you.

[SOLVED] Connected to wifi but no internet

Hi, I've been thinking about Linux for about a month now. I finally decided a few days ago to start reading up. I discovered Ubuntu was the way to go for beginners. So I downloaded what I assumed is the newset version "Ubuntu 16.10 desktop (32bit)" and set it up on a flash drive. Have it booted on an old gateway laptop. I'm not new to pc's and know the general formula of things but most of witch has been on windows. Before posting I googled and tried searching around on the form but with no success. It seemed many people had similar issues and really tried to figure it out on my own but with no success. Figured y'all get tired of answering the same questions over and over believe me I know how it is. The OS boots fine and I was able to get connected to my wifi but no internet. Everything looks good n the connection settings. It came with Firefox and the Ubuntu browser, tried both of those with no luck and the Ubuntu software app to see about downloading another browser. Just to see if there was a chance there was an issue with the other browsers but the software app couldn't connect to anything either. The laptop connects fine when booted into windows and I was able to see all the nearby networks and connect to my own. So I'm pretty sure there's no driver issues with in Ubuntu. Any help with this issue would be much appreciated, Thanks in advance.

Lubuntu 16.10 Fresh Install and Suspicious Traffic

$

Hi!

Yesterday I installed Lubuntu 16.04 to my HDD and discovered some very strange traffic both incoming and outgoing from the ntp port, listed under 123/udp.

After researching the connecting IPs I found out that most of them correspond to local software businesses and IT firms.

I checked the traffic with iftop, which showed that multiple bytes, in some cases even +1KB, was sent and received to and from those IPs.

Screenshot: https://s12.postimg.org/w647skop9/screen.png

.)Do I have to be worried, that those services transmitted malware or other harmful code?

.)How can I permanently block those connections or port?

I have tried using the following, unsuccessfully.

-->with the built in firewall
Code:

sudo ufw deny 123/udp
Code:

sudo ufw deny ntp
-->with iptables
Code:

sudo iptables -A OUTPUT -p udp --dport 123 -j DROP
Code:

sudo iptables -A INPUT -p udp --sport 123 -j DROP
Thank you!

[ubuntu] Atheros Network Card Gives Slow WiFi Speed, Ubuntu 16.10

I noticed today that my Ubuntu 16.10 laptop is showing internet speeds only about 50% of what my android phone is getting. I'm with Verizon, and their internet speed test shows me getting just about 45 Mb/S download speeds with my android phone, but only about 27 from the laptop. The only difference I can find is the wireless adaptor for the laptop. I've attached the output of the Ubuntu wireless script, and the output of iwconfig is below. I notic the the Invalid misc value of 657, which seems concerning. How do I research what those are? Any suggestions on how I should proceed in investigating/fixing this issue?

Netsed, IPtables, and UBUNTU VM

PROBLEM: I am lacking clairity on how to properly setup a virtual machine on windows 10 host with NETSED and IPTABLES. Host is using a specific application that is sending and receiving information on TCP, I would like the outbound packets from host to be routed through the virtual machine so I can edit them on the fly with NETSED.

SETUP: Windows 10 host with UBUNTU 16.04 running in VIRTUAL BOX. Have tried NAT and Bridged.

iptables -t nat -D PREROUTING -s 1.2.3.4 -d 5.6.0.0/16 -p tcp --dport 12345 -j REDIRECT --to 10101

I have tried the above code plugging in my IP's, and keeping port 80 for both source and destination.

Slooooow and unrelieable internet since update to 16.04

I use ubuntu 16.04 on an old lenovo T60p.

After I updated from 14.04 to 16.04, the wifi (and wlan) doesn't work properly anymore:
• If it works at all, it is so slow that it takes ages to even download new email (yaaaaaaawn)
• After some time it often drops out and everything is gone, no wlan, no wifi recognised. Works again after reboot.
• If I want to change from one network to another (e.g. to smartphone hotspot or wlan), it doesn't wort. Only works with the first connection after reboot.
• all networks/wifi work well on other devices and worked well before update.

I read about similar problems in a prior thread, but what was suggested there didn't work with me either.

I also read that it is suggested to directly install ubuntu 16.04 instead of updating. The IN issue is so tiring that I would do this, but how can I if I can't download an install CD image... (because it takes days, and the connection fails after minutes)?

Help would be very much appreciated. I am an ubuntu dummy (one of these who just uses it because windows is worse), so please formulate your answers accordingly thanks!

Bonded connection and use

$

In the past I configured a bonded connection on my Ubuntu 16.04 server and I always thought it was working. Recently I ran bmon while a file transfer was in progress and then I saw all the traffic being sent to an IP address of another port not part of the bond, despite using the specific IP of the bonded connection. I am not convinced I ever finished setting up the bond correctly but it led me to believe it was up.

For some background. I have a HP 4 port card that I installed into the machine (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and these are the ports I bonded together. The bonding was done in the /etc/network/interface file (http://i.imgur.com/x836cVc.png). This file is all sorts of weird to me now. Why I commented out the manual configuration while using manual I don't recall and deleting the comments causes the network service to not start. Either way the Bond0 was meant to be IP .110 while eth0 was to be .101 (here is the ifconfig http://i.imgur.com/S937h9R.png). I also, have these 4 ports plugged in and configured as LAG with my Cisco SG200-26 26-Port Gigabit Smart Switch. Here is how the config looks if it helps (http://i.imgur.com/FnMTjHQ.png and http://i.imgur.com/ES1RUZ9.png). My Verizon mandated router is the DHCP host for the network. I have it to DHCP from range of .002 - .099 reserving .100 for the switch and I wanted .101 for eth0 and .110 for bond0. Eth0 is plugged into the router directly and has all the port forwarding done to that port, ssh etc. Meanwhile, IP .110 was meant to be for internal file transfers.

Now to the issue I noticed. I connected to my samba shares just by typing in 192.168.1.110 into my windows machine and drag and drop files to and from. Since I connected to the machine via typing in the specific address I always assumed I was sending files over that port. I installed and ran bmon the other day and realized that despite connecting to samba with .110 all my files were being transferred .101 instead (http://i.imgur.com/p8wu4Kj.png and http://i.imgur.com/hWS0fjZ.png). I even unplugged the cord from eth0 and when I did that the bond0 broke as well.

Can I have some help on to properly configuring my bond0 to be the static IP address of .110 and eth0 to remain as .101 so I can ssh through that port. I don't really care if the 4 port card is static IP or not as long as the bond itself is.

Thanks!
