Hi
I have an Intel Wireless 3160 in my Dell laptop and recently, after trying to fix my bluetooth, I've lost my wireless.

The weird part is that when I run this command

HTML Code:

lshw -C network
The Network detects my hardware:

Code:

*-network
      description: Network controller
      product: Wireless 3160
      vendor: Intel Corporation
      physical id: 0
      bus info: pci@0000:02:00.0
      version: 83
      width: 64 bits
      clock: 33MHz
      capabilities: bus_master cap_list
      configuration: driver=iwlwifi latency=0
      resources: irq:280 memory:d2100000-d2101fff

But when running
HTML Code:

rfkill list all
the results are the following:

Code:

0: hci0: Bluetooth
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no

Here's the output of my wireless analysis

Code:

[ubuntu] DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds.

Hi All.

I'm trying to setup a private LAN that hosts a private website for those connected to the network.

Environment:
- Private LAN
- 1 Wireless Router
- 1 Ubuntu Server 16.04.1 LTS
- X Windows/Mac's connected to the router via wifi

Configurations:
- Ubuntu Server has a static IP (192.168.1.3) given by the router. (NIC on server is configured as DHCP)
- Wireless Router has its DNS servers configured to the Ubuntu Server (192.168.1.3)
- Ubuntu Server has Bind9 installed
- Ubuntu Server is hosting a basic website "www.example.com"
- I've configured a new forward and reverse DNS zone following the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/servergu...iguration.html for the website "www.example.com"

Issue:
1. On a Windows 7 Laptop, I use Chrome to access the website "www.example.com" and find that it takes 20-30 seconds to resolve the first page. Once the first page loads (e.g. homepage), all other subsequent pages on the website load at a faster rate (this includes the first page).
2. On a Windows 7 laptop, connected to the LAN, using nslookup always results in the following

Code:

C:\Users\User> nslookup example.com
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.1.3

DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.

    timeout was 2 seconds.
Name:    example.com
Address: 192.168.1.3

3. When I use Dig on the server... it works.... here's the results:
Code:

administrator@server01:~$ dig example.com

Can anyone help me in resolving issue 1 and 2? Or point me in a direction of where to start looking.
Thanks!

[ubuntu] archer T1U wireless usb adapter not working with Ubuntu 16.04

Hello

I am fairly new to Ubuntu but am studying computer science with the Open University. I have recently bought a workstation which didn't come with a wireless card so I bought a TP-Link archer T1U which I am having trouble installing the driver. The support from TP-Link said that they only support linux kernel 3.3 to 3.6 but my kernel is 4.4 and they don't support that. They said about posting on forums to see if any one could help. Any help would be appreciated on a compatible driver or an alternative dongle that would be ok with Ubuntu 16.04

Thanks

Asus X450CC wifi has been hard blocked. Tested on other Linux distros and result is the same. Wifi cannot be turned on and remains hard blocked. Current Linux distro in use is Xubuntu 16.0.1 and is dual booted to Windows 10. The wifi works fine on Windows 10. Laptop has no physical wifi switch.

https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2181558 did not work for me.

Cherry Trail Wifi problems

I have an Intel Cherry Trail (Atom z8700) tablet on which I have been trying to get Ubuntu (x86 64) installed/working. With some help from Linuxium (thank you Ian Morison), I have gotten it "mostly" working. The one major issue I still have is that Wifi is not working. (Ubuntu says "no interface found" in the Wifi setup.)

All of the info that I have found about fixing this issue seems to involve being connected to the internet and downloading something via a Linux utility, but if I don't have Wifi, I can't connect to the internet. (It's kind of a "chicken and egg" sort of thing.)

Any suggestions?

Machine unreachable on local network after three days

I've had this issue for a long time now. My Ubuntu machine runs an apache2 web server. I have a Windows PC and an Android tablet on the same network from which I can sftp and ssh into the Ubuntu PC. I can also browse from these to the machine's IP in the browser to see my website. Until... Three days later... Suddenly it's unreachable (on local network; still ok using outside IP address). Always have to power cycle the modem. Don't know why... Lack the knowledge to even know how to begin to figure out why. Don't know if I need a new modem, new wifi adapter for the Ubuntu PC, or what... Anyone able to help?

HH5 plus another router

Hi,
I have a Home Hub 5 which connects to the internet over my phone line. At the moment I have it configured as 192.168.1.1 and running DHCP.
I have a cisco e4200 running dd-wrt with its wan port connected to one of the lan ports of the HH5 and DHCP switched off on the e4200. I've set the HH5 to always give the e4200 the same address (192.168.1.79) and set this as the DMZ zone of the HH5. This I understand causes all external connections to go straight to the e4200.
The address of the e4200 is hub is 192.168.0.1 and I have a server connected to the e4200 fixed as 192.168.0.5 which provides DHCP to everything else I connect to it (GW 192.168.0.1 and DNS 192.168.0.5). It effectively uses the HH5 as a modem and all things I plug into the e4200 can access each other and the internet.
This is fine but I've run out of ports on the e4200. Is there anyway I can configure this to use the modem of the HH5 for internet, with the e4200 and HH5 connected and configured such that all lan ports take their clients addresses from my connected PC running the DHCP server?
At present if I connect a client to the HH5 its given a 192.168.1.# address and it can connect to the internet but not my 192.168.0.# machines. Obviously, I'm limited by the settings on the HH5 as its provided by BT but I can do anything I want with the e4200....
Thanks for your help,
:D

I had a headless vnc server on 14.10 ..but for some reason I cannot for the life of me or lack of trying get my script to run before I login...

Which is driving me nuts. I can get this working on ubuntu and linux mint but not lubuntu....

So how do you get a program or script to work before loging in on lubuntu 16.10

[ubuntu] Routing problem; default gateway doesn't work?

$

Hi,

I've installed Ubuntu server 16.04 LTS.

I have two VLANs each with their own IP-scope and a firewall the VLANs for routing

VLAN Id - IP-scope - Gateway
VLAN 10 - 10.20.10.0/24 - 10.20.10.1
VLAN 20 - 10.20.20.0/24 - 10.20.20.1

The Ubuntu server is located in VLAN 10 (10.20.10.101), and can reach other clients in the same VLAN.
Code:

root@server:~# ping 10.20.10.1
PING 10.20.10.1 (10.20.10.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 10.20.10.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.391 ms
64 bytes from 10.20.10.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.198 ms

But if I try to ping something in VLAN 20 eg. my laptop at 10.20.20.55, I get Destination Host Unreachable.

Code:

root@server:~# ping 10.20.20.55
PING 10.20.20.55 (10.20.20.55) 56(84) bytes of data.
From 10.20.10.101 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable
From 10.20.10.101 icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable
From 10.20.10.101 icmp_seq=3 Destination Host Unreachable

But I can ping Google DNS (8.8.8.8):
Code:

root@server:~# ping 8.8.8.8
PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=1 ttl=42 time=19.4 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=2 ttl=42 time=19.8 ms

The routing table:
Code:

root@server:~# ip r s
default via 10.20.10.1 dev enp2s0 onlink
10.0.0.0/8 dev enp2s0  proto kernel  scope link  src 10.20.10.101
10.20.10.0/24 dev enp2s0  proto kernel  scope link  src 10.20.10.101

Adding a route:
Code:

root@server:~# ip r a 10.20.20.0/24 via 10.20.10.1 dev enp2s0

And the routing table:
Code:

root@server:~# ip r s
default via 10.20.10.1 dev enp2s0 onlink
10.0.0.0/8 dev enp2s0  proto kernel  scope link  src 10.20.10.101
10.20.20.0/24 via 10.20.10.1 dev enp2s0
10.20.10.0/24 dev enp2s0  proto kernel  scope link  src 10.20.10.101

And ping works:

Code:

root@server:~# ping 10.20.20.55
PING 10.20.20.55 (10.20.20.55) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 10.20.20.55: icmp_seq=1 ttl=63 time=37.1 ms
64 bytes from 10.20.20.55: icmp_seq=2 ttl=63 time=61.1 ms

I've tried to set up a third VLAN using 100.64.0.0/24 and ping works without adding a route.

Anyone knows why this is? As I know networking, the default route should send data for 10.20.20.0/24 to the firewall, which should route it, but this doesn't happen until I add this extra route for the network.

The firewall currently have an any-any between the two VLANs to test this.

Network configuration:
Code:

root@server:~# cat /etc/network/interfaces
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

source /etc/network/interfaces.d/*

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
auto enp2s0
iface enp2s0 inet static
  address 10.20.10.101
  netmask 255.255.255.0
  gateway 10.20.10.1

[ubuntu] Install pptp-linux offine

I installed an Ubuntu 16.04 server on my HP workstation. However, I am only allowed to connect to the network via VPN. The only way I know to do this via command line is through PPTP-linux(http://serverfault.com/questions/422...er-with-no-gui), but pptp-linux is not installed by default. So my question is, is there any way to install it offline? (I have another computer which has network.) It does not have a deb file, so I can not install it by this way: https://subinsb.com/debian-ubuntu-in...encies-offline.

If this is too difficult, is there any other solution to solve my problem? Thanks.

Packet loss on Ubuntu but normal on windows

Hi,

I am facing packet loss on a destination (64.154.41.100) when pinged on Ubuntu but on the same network, same subnet public IP there is no packet loss.

I've checked server CPU usage but it dosen't goes above 3-4%, have more then 50% free RAM.

What could be causing packet loss? what other troubleshooting steps can I take?

[ubuntu] Slow download speed (ONLY downloads from ubuntu main server) (from Japan)

$

Recently my download speed from Ubuntu servers (ip starting with 91.189...) is very slow (wired connection).

Previously (July 2016) my normal speed from the main server was 5-12MiB/s (from updates and from cdimage) but recently (from September 2016) I often only get 20KiB/s-200KiB/s. Sometimes it goes back up to my previous normal speed (5-12MiB/s) but this usually does not last long (1-10 minutes at a time). Whether my download is fast or slow seems to be completely random. This slow speed applies to any download from ubuntu including cdimage, synaptic, and update manager (they all connect to ip 91.189...).

I consistently get 9-15MiB/s from cdimage.debian.org and 50MiB/s from iso and update mirrors in Japan, so I think it is probably not a problem with my internet. I live in Tokyo Japan and have a gigabit connection.

-disabling ipv6 does not help
-I have a skylake i5 6600 cpu. Switching motherboard (msi to gigabyte h170) did not help. Both motherboards use Intel i219v LAN adapter.
-the computer I used in July was a haswell desktop, it is broken so I cannot test it. I bought the skylake desktop in September.
-Buying a new router did not help
-this problem persists in 16.04 and 16.10
-I do not know exactly when this started because I did not use the internet between July and September 2016

[ubuntu] Wifi inconsistant - but always shows connected (Intel Wireless 3165 Rev 79)

Hello everyone! First time Linux user - got interested after watching some A+ lectures and figured I'd give it a shot. SO my issue is that my wifi seems to be very sporadic, my wifi icon shows it is always connected but it will randomly not have Internet access and I need to disconnected and reconnect for it to resume internet connectivity (even though it shows always connected). My current set up is a Dell Inspiron 13-7353 and installed Ubuntu 16.04 on a separate partition on my SSD

here is my wireless-info text http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/23391524/ to get that out of the way.

I've found similar posts here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/65777...s-3165-to-work and here https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2219917 and I have tried everything I could within those posts to try to fix my network issue but have not had any luck. I will say, the only thing that I could not get to work, is the command for setting my country for my wireless settings.. "sudo iw reg set US" no matter whenever I check it shows "Country 00: DFS-UNSET" I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it, but I have no idea what else to do or where else to check. I've also verified my Power Save option on my wireless settings is off.

Thanks in advance for your help, and I really hope I didn't stupidly miss something.

-Luke

EDIT: I've noticed whenever I restart my wireless power management automatically turns itself back on.

SSH Port Forwarding logging me into server and not forwarding onto the remote host?

$

My goal is to type one command and be greeted by the login of a remtoe-host that is reachable through an ssh-server, I am running the command below.

ssh -L 1300:remote-host:22 user@ssh-server

It's my understanding that the ssh-server will forward my request onto remote-host and I will be greeted by a login screen for the remote-host. However I am asked for the credentials of the ssh-server where I can log into but then I have to ssh from there onto the remote-host. Not the desired outcome.

My understanding of this subject is in its infancy so I'm clearly missing something. Perhaps a simple addition to the command?

I have checked that the ssh-server can reach the remote-host via port 22.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks in advance

Problems with Realtek 8821AE

Yes, another user with WiFi issues.

This is a problem that's been annoying me for quite some time now.
I can connect fine to an AP, but after a random amount of time (I have a feeling it's tied to IP TTL), I'm unable to resolve hosts. As if my DNS resolver stops working.
The problem even extends to localhost, as I'm unable to resolve the vagrant sites I have running, which are set in /etc/hosts. I'm still connected to the AP - I don't get disconnected at any point.

The only solution to get back online (so far) is to reconnect through the top panel, or run:
Code:

sudo service network-manager restart
I've tried the following:
- The usual, skipping DHCP, setting DNS servers manually (twice), etc.
- Run an upstream kernel, as some users pointed out it was fixed upstream.
- Different drivers.
- Disable Bluetooth and IPv6 - the latter through /etc/sysctl.conf.
- Echo'ing configurations through modprobe.

I've also tried testing different distro's: I'm currently running elementaryOS Loki (16.04 based), pure Ubuntu 16.04, Solus (just to try something not-Ubuntu-based), Budgie Remix (both 16.04 and 16.10 variants), and pure Ubuntu 16.10.
The latter might work best, as I was unable to reproduce the error during the 45 minutes of testing I did on a live CD, however, as I mentioned I also tried the 16.10 variant of Budgie Remix and the error was there within a minute.

I have a feeling that it's tied to the router I'm connecting to, however, I'm unable to configure it as it's the company's network, and I'm not going to mess with that.
I would be able to do small tinkering through the web UI (I have access), if any of you have a solition. The reason I have this feeling is, that I've also tried with a WiFi dongle (sadly also by Realtek), and experienced the same issues.

If any of you have a hint what to try next, I'd really appreciate it.

PS: It's working fine in Windows :(
