Trying to solve an activation failed using solutions from the web make things worse

Hello, I am new to ubuntu.
I installed ubuntu 17.04 via DOK to dual boot with WIN10 on my ASUS Zenbook UX303LA(there isn't an RJ-45 Ethernet socket)

I try to connect to my home network with no success.
I got this message:
Quote:

connection activation failed "(24) timeout" was reached
I was able to connect to my hotspot(to the smartphone) and connect to another wifi but still wasn't able to connect to my home network.
I searched for solution
I try:
Code:

sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager stop
and nothing happened, the cursor blinked for few seconds and nothing else happend.
I try:
Code:

sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager start
and still nothing happened.

I restarted the computer to check if I made changes but the restart took ages so I pressed the shutdown button for few seconds and force it.
Now, the
WiFi icon missing on the right side of the upper panel
When I enter to Network through setting, the setting window colors are turned to white and grey color for some seconds and I get a message:
Quote:

The system network services are not compatible with this version.
When I boot up WIN10, the wifi works and I connect successfully to my home network wifi.

Sometimes I connect with a wire using USB Ethernet adapter.
When I connect it while running ubuntu, nothing happens.

How do I fix all these problems.

Thanks.

Dell XPS 13 wireless connection limited to 1 MBit/s

Hi there and thanks in advance for your assistance!

I just recevied my brand new XPS 13 with ubunut 16.04 lts installed. Everything works out of the box but my wireless connection is limited to 1 MBit/s, which is pretty annoying.

Doing some research, I found one thread from a guy with a similar problem https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2354499 only it doesn't seem to be resolved.

I did run that same script and its output is attached to this post (I hope).

I suspect it is some kind of configuration problem on the driver side but I have no idea on how to deal with that.

Can anybody help, please?

Thanks!

[ubuntu] Can't Print to Wireless Printer - ubuntu 1604

Hi, I am unable to ping my wireless printer.

1) Before this issue began, I typed [fping -g 192.168.3.0/24]. and it resulted in [192.168.3.181 is alive], my printer wireless IP address. Then I went to my windows machine and typed in [ping -a 192.168.3.181]. This resulted in BRW . . . . FOD] designating that 181 was associated with my BROTHER printer.

2) Now, when I type [FPING -g 192.168.3.0/24] I get my IP wireless addresses for the router 192.168.3.1 and this HP UBUNTU machine 192.168.3.102, and that is it . . . . no additional addresses that would indicate the printer. Further, now, I can't even ping my windows machine 192.168.3.102. However, I can print WIFI to the wireless printer via the windows machine but I can't ping the 181 from the windows machine. Please see my WIFI info report at the link below.

[ubuntu] Wifi not working, wired OK, indicator missing, cannot start network manager

After a recent update, all networking simply stopped working. It was probably an update, but didn't appear until after a reboot. I have managed to get the wired side working, but despite seriously questioning my friend (Google) I have not found a solution to the wifi side.

I have attached the output from the wifi info script. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Edit: I was having issues with PIA hanging and not connecting at about this time and was poking around some settings,. Didn't think I actually changed anything.

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 16.04 Belkin F9L1101v1 Problems

Hi all,
I recently decided to switch from WIndows 10 to Ubuntu 16.04 on my desktop computer because I am more comfortable all around with Ubuntu. I do have a USB Network Adapter - the Belkin F9L1101v1 - and I've had some trouble getting it to work. Some things I have tried:
  1. ndiswrapper with bcmwlhigh5.inf (Windows XP Driver), and bcmwlhigh6.inf (Both the Vista and Win7 drivers).
    1. Side note, the best that has happened was with the bcmwlhigh5.inf file. I am able to get momentary internet access, but after a second or two any internet calls time out.

  2. I have tried a good amount of the drivers on github, including rtl8192du. These did not work.

One thing I've noticed is that I can ping my router, but if I try to ping google.com or 8.8.8.8 the requests time out. Looking at the results of the wireless-info script that was stickied here, it looks like I do not have an IPv6 gateway set (this might be the problem?). I'm not great with networking stuff but I was able to install dkms and ndiswrapper by downloading the .deb files from my laptop (which I'm posting from), putting them on a Flash Drive, and installing with dpkg on my Desktop. I've attached the .tar.gz file to the post and the output of the script is located here: https://pastebin.com/7VC5HhT8 . Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Griff

[server] Ubuntu Server 16.XX installion on NUC7I5BNH with Intel Wireless-AC 8265

I'm currently trying to install Ubuntu Server 16.XX on a NUC7I5BNH (to create a media server and keeping resource use low) with USB and I'm struggling with the WiFi during the installation process. I need WiFi for the installation process to download the required packages since I don't have LAN. I've started with v16.04 which, as I've realized later, apparently does not have the kernel module for the Intel Wireless-AC 8265 (based on command
Code:

modinfo iwlwifi
. Next I've tried 16.04.2 without success and lately 16.10, which seems to have the module, but is unable to load the firmware as seen with the command:

Code:

dmesg | grep firm
with as result:

Code:

iwlwifi 0000:3a:00.0: Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-8265-24.ucode failed with error -2
there are also lines for 8265-23.ucode, 8265-22.ucode, 8265-21.ucode and 8265-20.ucode.

I also tried to add the firmware on the install-USB or on a separate USB stick in folder /firmware without success.

modprobe iwlwifi-8265 produced a fatal error.

BTW, i cannot use rfkill, since it is not part of the install medium, lspci does not show that the wifi card has been identified and ip link does not list wlan.

I know that it should work, since Ubuntu 16.04.2 live version runs on the machine and recognizes the wifi.

I'm running out of ideas and can't find anything else on the internet. Maybe one of you has a great idea.

Hello everybody.

First of all I'd like to thanks the community for your work and the support.

I just installed Lubuntu on my netbook and I can't find my personal network.

Every other network appears, even the ones far away.

But when I go to "Edit Connections", on the "Network Connections" window, my network shows on the wi-fi section.

Is there any configuration that I have to do? If so, i there any link that I can go?

Thank you in advance

I connected to wifi originally and set my laptop up. I may have played with the wifi drivers by accident and now I am trying to connect to a different wifi and it won't connect. I am trying to figure out where to start looking into this as a new user. I posted some info below that may help.

Laptop is a Dell XPS (9360) that was bought with ubuntu already loaded.

Side note: I am also getting an error on boot every once and awhile that says System program problem report that I haven't been able to explain either.

If anyone can help that would be awesome.

[ubuntu] Adding tap device to bridge causes DNS to fail (sometimes)

$

Hello everyone,

I am on Ubuntu xenial (16.04 LTS), since I use virtualization, I decided to make a bridged network.

I created the bridge in /etc/network/interfaces
like so:
Code:

iface enp0s31f6 inet manual

auto br0
iface br0 inet dhcp
  bridge_ports    enp0s31f6
  bridge_stp      off
  bridge_maxwait  0
  bridge_fd      0

and my internet works fine. When I add a tap device like this:

Code:

user=anyone
dev=tap0
ip tuntap add $dev mode tap user $usr
ip link set $dev up
ip link set $dev master br0

I can use the tap device to access the internet without problems from my virtualized guest. Sometimes, I still have normal internet access from my host (i.e. DNS is working).
However more often than not, the DNS fails on my host system (I tested by pinging remote hosts with their IP, with their name it would fail). Everything is fine again on my host system as soon as I remove the tap device.

I do not think these are external network issues, since I had very much the same setup on Fedora, and it worked flawlessly.

I can't find anything useful in dmesg, syslog or ip route to help me out. So I am asking here, has anyone an idea what is wrong?

Kind regards,
Bill

Can someone please help me with getting the drivers and wifi working for this device please. Without getting it working on my Ubuntu 17.04 host I can't pass it to virtualbox.

When i do lsusb i get

but it still cant recognise the device, i assume this is due to the drivers

sudo lshw show me

Code:

too many network login retries at startup - lubuntu 12.04

Every time i startup the computer, lightdm login shows up, the first few times I try to login to linux server it wont login and no error message displayed just prompts again for credentials. I have to wait 2 to 3 minutes for the login to be successful.
Code:

Cheking the log (var/log/auth.log) i can see that on the failed attempts, lightdm fails to send the user to the server:
lightdm: pam_unix(lightdm:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=:0 ruser= rhost=
while waiting 2 or 3 minutes, on the succesful login, the user is passed on the call:
pam_succeed_if(lightdm:auth): requirement "user ingroup nopasswdlogin" not met by user "v.jimenez"
pam_unix(lightdm:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=:0 ruser= rhost= user=v.jimenez

It is annoying waiting for almost 4 minutes to login to the network for the lightdm login to work.

Anyone have an idea what is going on?

thanks

[RT5370] Wireless USB Adapter Won't Connect to Networks

Hello, guys!
Well, I'm having this problem since the version 16 of ubuntu, I guess (maybe since the latest version of network-manager, I don't know).
Until last week, I was using Elementary OS Loki on my computer, but this weekend I've decided to install Ubuntu Budgie (really cool flavour, until now! I recommend)

Well, the problem that I'm having now is the same that I've had on Elementary. I didn't use elementary for some time and I only discovered the problem a few days before this weekend.

Here it is: my adaptater (Link One L1-AW1Un) always worked fine in both Linux and Windows - in the older versions of ubuntu and other distros that I've tried.
But now, and I don't know why, it's not working anymore just on linux.
I'm able to see the networks normally, and even try to connect to them (it asks for a password and so on), but then it just takes a long time before it shows "You are disconnected".
I'm using a cable connection right now to post this thread.

I've tried to put rt2800usb driver into modprobe's blacklist and then compile the Ralink RT5370's driver manually, but I just can't do it (some compile errors that I haven't found out there yet).
So, I've decided to get back to the start and just ask if someone had the same problem and could give me a little light.

I used @varunendra's Wireless Script, so it can maybe help you all with helping me :(
And I really appreciate any help you can provide.

This is the Wireless Script output:

Code:

Hello all.I am a new user of Lubuntu. My problem goes like this.I am trying to install a wireless driver so that I can access the internet in a device with Lubuntu 16.4 LTS.I have no Ethernet cable so I have to do everything offline.I have been searching for hours and I managed to find out that I need the B43 driver. My Broadcom card is Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY [14e4:4315].I downloaded b43-fwcutter_019-2 and firmware-b43-installer_019-2 .deb packages and installed them. But that doesn't seem to be enough,I guess I need to find the B43 driver and use the commands of these packages to install it.But I can't seem to manage to find it anywhere. Can anyone help me?

EDIT:I have to do everything offline or else it would be much easier

I'd like to download the source code for the diction program using ftp as illustrated on page 346 of this book.

Here's the terminal's output:

Code:

Cannot mount network share with SMB2/3

Hi all,

We have a Windows server at our institution on which people put their data. Due to the recent wave of ransomware attacks, smbv1 had to be blocked. Now the problem is that machines running Ubuntu and derivatives cannot connect to it anymore, which they apparently were accessing through smb1.

The standard protocol now gets refused as it should be:
Code:

smbclient  <URL> -U <username> -W WIN
protocol negotiation failed: NT_STATUS_CONNECTION_RESET

We could changing the protocol to make smbclient connect successfully:
Code:

smbclient  <URL> -U <username> -m SMB3 -W WIN
Domain=[WIN] OS=[] Server=[]
smb: \>

But I cannot mount the drive through Nemo GUI, nor using to command line with cifs.
Code:

sudo mount -t cifs -o username=<username>,domain=WIN,vers=2.0 <URL> ./server
mount error(22): Invalid argument
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)

Similarly for v2.1 or 3. The kernels are > 4.2. Any ideas what might be causing the issue or how to fix this problem would be appreciated.

Thanks.
