Ethernet working but wireless doesn't Ubuntu 14.04.5

Hi,

I'm currently running Ubuntu 14.04.5 and am trying to get a wireless connection. I'm stuck on 14.04 because my project requires it. My wireless card is an Intel AC 3165 + bluetooth. I did try getting the firmware, but it seems to already have been installed to /lib/firmware/. I have tried a lot of other things like pulling the HWE stack (whatever that means), upgrading my kernel to 4.8 (not sure if I'm required to remove my 4.4 kernel for that) ,downloading the Intel connection manager and finally screwing over my whole internet connection and having to restore Ubuntu. I'm not sure what to try anymore.

I have attached my wireless-info.txt file at http://paste.ubuntu.com/25527090/
Please help.
Thank you very much.

Internet too slow and sometimes the connection is dropped

I'm moving from Windows 10 with an ASUS A455LF, there i had to disable the Bluethoot all the time to get the WiFi working properly

Here in DeepIn i've tried the same, but it doesn't work, the navegation turn too slow most of the time and have weak signal even near to router, and sometimes connection is lost with "802.1X" error, after that, it doesn't recognize any WiFi conection and the only way to get it works again is rebooting the PC

By the way, with the LAN conection everything goes fine

My hardware info:

[ubuntu] networking.service failed.....exited with error code

hi guys I'm in need of some help ive ran Linux servers in the past thanks to the tutorials, but ive never came across this problem.
I bought a cheap hp microserver n54l installed 2 1TB hard drives ive followed this tutorial howtoforge - ubuntu-16.04-xenial-xerus-minimal-server
the only change I made to the install was running the server with soft raid 1.
I got upto nano /etc/network/interfaces and placed the same settings as the tutorial
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).
source /etc/network/interfaces.d/*
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
# The primary network interface
auto ens33
iface ens33 inet static
address 192.168.1.100
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.1.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
gateway 192.168.1.1
dns-nameservers 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4
the problem I had here is do I need to place the netmask, gateway from my isp or my router settings so I just copied the same settings and hope its right.
I then service networking restart
and got the following error Job for networking.service failed because the control process exited with error code. See "systemctl status networking.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.

Ive googled, bing and searched forums for a fix but there is so many different fixes I don't know whats right or wrong so I'm hoping someone would be nice enough to help. I should of stayed with my old setup but it has to be done.

thanks guys

DHCP question :)

Guys if I connect a server directly to a switch can I run DHCP services on the server so that anything I plug into the switch would get basic i.p details.

If so what would the network config look like? would I just specify subnet mask, i,p addy bearing in mind no router would be involved?

Lastly what would the DHCP setup look like?

Many thanks for guidance

[ubuntu] wired connection not working after upgrade from 16.04 to 17.04

Hello all,

I already posted this question in the upgrade forum, so I appologize for cross-posting but I'm new to this. As the subject says I have upgraded from 16.04 to 17.04 and now wired networking is not working any more. When booting 17.04 from Live USB networking works. Below is the output of the wireless info script mentioned in some threads. Any advice how to fix this problem without reinstalling will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Bernd

Hello I start learning with nftables. So far so good. Now I can't figureout how to allow samba betwenn two networks.
I have lan_net (172.16.1.0/24)
I have dmz_net (10.10.10.0/24)
I allow in forward chain this:
Code:

ip saddr { $lan_net } udp dport {137,138} ip daddr { $dmz_net } log prefix "SmbLanToDmz:" ct state new accept
ip saddr { $lan_net } tcp dport {139,445} ip daddr { $dmz_net } log prefix "SmbLanToDmz:" ct state new accept
ip saddr { $dmz_net } udp dport {137,138} ip daddr { $lan_net } log prefix "SmbDmzToLan:" ct state new accept
ip saddr { $dmz_net } tcp dport {139,445} ip daddr { $lan_net } log prefix "SmbDmzToLan:" ct state new accept

OUTPUT chain is accept for all.
sysctl.conf has allow ipv4 forward to 1.
Thank you for any help.

Hello all,

I recently upgraded to 17.04 and the networking stopped working. When booting 17.04 from Live USB networking is ok. I tried to find a solution myself but I'm not really knowledgable. So far I found that it would be usefull to run the script found at
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Ub.../wireless-info

Below is the output of the script.
Maybe someone has advice how to fix the problem.

Thank you,
Bernd

Wired ethernet connection not working (Ubuntu 16.04)

Hi all, Ubuntu noob here (though I've used Ubuntu occasionally with virtual machines on my mac).

I've just built my own PC, with a GIGABYTE GA-Z170X motherboard and an NVidia GPU (among other hardware I can provide). I'm having issues booting into GUI, which I think are related to missing NVidia drivers that I need to apt-get, so I'm currently booting into a terminal and trying to get the ethernet working but running into issues. I'm largely leaning on this great thread for advice.

First off, I tried plugging in ethernet and pinging google. The modem and router are working correctly for other devices in the household, but I get "unknown host google.com" back.

After some more reading, my /etc/network/interfaces looked like:

Code:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

Somehow I figured out that the ethernet on my system was enp0s31f6.

So I added that to /etc/network/interfaces:

Code:

auto enp0s31f6
iface enp0s31f6 inet dhcp

Here's a photo of the file in action.
IMG_9574.jpg

I also restarted the network-manager after every edit.

(Note: I wasn't sure whether to use dhcp or a static IP. I don't need a static IP but thought I might need to configure one to get things working, but that didn't help. I'm also not sure how to get the right values for each of the values, but if dhcp is adequate I'd like to stick with that.)

ifconfig -a produces the following:

IMG_9572.jpg

So enp0s31f6 shows up, with some IP address, but pinging still fails.

I tried sudo dhclient enp0s31f6 (I'm not sure what this command does but another poster recommended it), and the command just hangs.

route and netstate produce the following:

IMG_9571.jpg

At this point I'm not sure what else to try. I'm at work all day today but happy to post any more information this evening when I get back.

Thanks for your help everyone!

(Apologies for the phone pictures; if I should retype the commands out for legibility I'm happy to do so.)

[ubuntu] NSLookup Works but Can't Ping

Hi there,

I'm currently using ubuntu 14.04 server. What's happening is that locally on the server, I can ping the local hostname and other places on the internet.

From another computer I can run an NSLookup;

Code:

project:~$ nslookup orange
Server:        10.10.2.1
Address:        10.10.2.1#53

Name:  orange
Address: 10.10.2.11

But when I ping I get;

Code:

project:~$ ping orange
ping: orange: Name or service not known

project:~$ ping 10.10.2.11
PING 10.10.2.11 (10.10.2.11) 56(84) bytes of data.

64 bytes from 10.10.2.11: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.554 ms

Now some settings on the server itself;

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 17.04 does not found WIFI if I use some 4.10.x-xx kernel

$

This is my first post, I apologize in advance if my English is not good enough, I hope I did it correctly and in the corresponding section; I have been using this notebook for a few years now, it came with Ubuntu 12 installed.

After many reboots without WiFi, I realized that the problem was if I used a version 4.10 kernel. I was researching with "journalctl" and checking the lines that there was difference between a start with WiFi and another without.

I base my hypothesis that the problem is related to the kernel version, since if I choose to use 4.8.xx or 4.6.xx at boot time and I always have WiFi enabled.

What caught my attention is that when I do not have WIFI I do not see the following line when I run "journalctl -b":

rfkill0: found WiFi radio killswitch (at /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1c.1/0000:02:00.0/ieee80211/phy0/rfkill0) (ath9k driver)

It is actually the first of many lines that are not from this one. Another thing I see happening is that I have no audio and no bluetooth. But I'm sure if they help me with the WiFi, the rest will be similar or I hope so.

Thank you very much and please help me to find the solution.

Intel wireless issues

Sorry for butting in to an old thread, but I've been having a similar problem for a few weeks now and am tearing my hair out trying to find a solution. I'm running an Intel 7260, and am experiencing the same inexplicable drops with my connection. It can happen after a few minutes, or a few hours, but like the OP it does seem to happen quicker if there is a lot of network traffic.

So...I'm running firmware iwlwifi-7260-17.ucode, I've disabled power saving, I've disabled 802.11n support, I'm pretty sure it's nothing to do with temperature or electrical interference, I'm using software crypto, both the software and hardware locks for wifi are off,

And nothing short of a complete reboot seems to fix it. Killing everything network related and restarting it just reports that the device isn't ready (both WPA Supplicant and network-manager, and no, I'm not running them both at the same time).

I'm pretty sure this started happening after an update, possibly of the kernel...as I haven't changed any hardware for months...and all updates have come through my package manager so I haven't been installing anything weird...

This is my dmesg, though I notice I'm getting something to do with a "stuck timer" although the end result seems to be the same "failed to wake NIC for hcmd" error...which I'm guessing filters through to a "device not ready" error higher up..

One thing I did notice that was strange...was that my Ubuntu repository only seems to have version 1.157 of linux-firmware, not 1.161. No idea why.

Here is what I know:
Kubuntu 16.04.3
Dual boot with Win 10
Realtek 802.11 usb wifi adapter (works great with Windows)
In Kubuntu :
pop shows device but nor connected.
popup shows 4% signal strength. Wifi tester shows -50db
popup shows not connected.
When I try to connect it asks for my network password. When entered it soon asks for it again.

Please I need a step by step solution using KISS method.
Windows now runs way too slow to use.
Older Dell machine

Thanks
Mike

Bluetooth can connect phone but not keyboard

I've seen several posts about this error message on various forums (so surprise, it's so descriptive), but none of the solutions have worked for me. I'm running Kubuntu 17.04 with bluez 5.43. I can connect to my phone, but not to my keyboard. I used to be able to connect to my keyboard just fine, but after upgrading to Ryzen I can't.

Code:

$ bluetoothctl

no internet connection (wired) on laptop

My laptop lost wired internet connection. When I plug in ethernet cable, steady green light is on. No orange/yellow light, no blinking.
I re-set all - modem, router, switch. Still, there's no connection.
I used another laptop to connect to internet (via the same cable) and there is connection (that's why I'm here).
I read a few posts on checking internet specs, after which I suspect that the motherboard (network part) is faulty.
I need to confirm my suspicion with you, guys.
BTW, the ethernet port of lap I'm using now shows only steady amber and blinking amber lights (blinking amber, where green usually is).
So, presently the modem is working, the router is good, the switch is also working. The lights on switch are green (left position).
The router is linksys, the switch is netgear GS108.
Let me know how I must diagnose the problem (from terminal?). Please note that I'm "an end user".
Thanks is advance.

I have 3 virtual machines under xen
pfsense...works fine
Windows 2008 works fine
Windows 2008 works fine except NAT from the internet...packets never arrive to the VM

I do not know if this is related or not,but it seems machine requires a daily reboot to work properly
Exact same hardware ran OpenSuse + VirtualBox for 15 months without issues

[lubuntu] 16.04 won't connect to a specific network (network works with W10 and android)

Hello, as per title I am having an issue connecting to a network with Lubuntu 16.04.2.

It just keeps trying to connect (icon loads forever) and then it throws a network error. The network is Eduroam, which if you are a student in Europe you will probably know, as it is a network used by many federated universities, where with your account you can get access to wifi at different universities and locations.

The interesting part is that I am having issues only when I am at my university, as when I am at different locations it works fine. I tried to connect with Windows 10 and it works, same thing for android. Therefore I can assume it is a problem with Lubuntu that for some reasons can't connect to the university wifi.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The settings I use, and which works fine when I am not at uni are:

GENERAL: "Automatically connect to this network when it is available" checked

WI-FI: SSID: eduroam, mode: Client, MTU: automatic

WI-FI SECURITY: WPA & WPA2 Enterprise, Authentication: Tunneled TLS, "No CA certificate is required" is checked, Inner authentication: MSCHAP

IPv4 SETTINGS: Automatic (DHCP)

IPv6 SETTINGS: Method: Automatic.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is there a way I can know what's going on and fix it?
Thank you.

NAS - setting file permissions in webmin - samba windows file sharing

I'm setting up a NAS file server using Ubuntu server 16.04 & accessing it with a Win10 machine... And yes, I am clueless about setting file permissions/users.

I have formatted a new drive as ext4, mounted it in /mnt/FOLDER, and created a Samba new file share NETWORK_FOLDER with writable access under security and access control in webmin (no guest access).

The shared folder, NETWORK_FOLDER isn't writable until I change folder permissions to 777. Ownership presently is root:root

Surely I'm doing something wrong? Wouldn't it be preferable to set folder permissions to 700, or even 600 (I only need read/write access to the file server), and access the network shares using an owner account (?). If so, I'm not sure how to accomplish this.

Any hints what am I doing wrong?

thanks!

[ubuntu_studio] YAWFSWFI Yet Another Wake-From-Sleep WiFi Issue

$

Hi,

I wonder if someone could provide some guidance on which of the umpteen "wifi dead after wake from sleep" Ubuntu bug reports is actually being worked on.

I had found, after installing Ubuntu Studio 16.04, that intermittently (but frequently) after waking the computer from suspend, wifi was inactive and could not be restored by "Enable Wi-Fi" in the network menu or by the hardware switch.

A script to "systemctl restart NetworkManager.service", installed into /lib/systemd/system-sleep/, seemed to alleviate the problem, but just now, after an update and reboot, it didn't work.

I've been on Ubuntu Studio 16.04 for about three months now, and it's disappointing when I thought I had worked around this problem, but it's still happening. And it's quite confusing to report the issue upstream, as there are several related bug reports open, which generally appear to be stalled, e.g.:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...r/+bug/1615164
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...r/+bug/1636282
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...r/+bug/1653324
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...r/+bug/1676810

Anyway, I wonder if anyone has any better ideas.
