unable to connect to shorpy.com

I enjoy old photos and have visited the site shorpy.com for years. Now when I try to visit the site I get the message "Failed to connect to database". This happens using Firefox, Chromium and Opera. It happens wired or on wireless. It also happens on my Android phone if it is connected to wireless. It does not happen if I use my phone over cellular network or my computer tethered to the phone over cellular. I have booted the linksys router, reset it to defaults and cleared cookies and cache of browsers. I know this is not an Ubuntu question, but I would appreciate any help available.

Hello everyone I have an issue getting my wireless dongle to work. It worked on a previous computer using ubuntu but I havent had any luck this go around. I bought this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and when I plug it in I can see my network and type in my password but then it gives an error saying netowrk disconnected. I have the driver cd it came with but I havent been able to do anything with it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Replaced my wifi drivers, now wireless in Windows doesn't work anymore

Dual booting with Windows 10. I've only installed Ubuntu 14.04 like last week. So basically the issue started with Ubuntu not having wireless internet. I found the issue described in this topic https://askubuntu.com/questions/7630...er-aspire-e-15

I could follow all the commands up until:

Code:

sudo mv firmware-5.bin_WLAN.TF.1.0-00267-1  firmware-5.bin
Since it couldn't find the file/directory. I looked further. I found this topic with a similar problem https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2308578

I executed these commands

Code:

sudo rm -r /lib/firmware/ath10k
sudo cp -r ath10k-firmware/ /lib/firmware/ath10k/
sudo mv /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw2.1/firmware-5.bin_SW_RM.1.1.1-00157-QCARMSWPZ-1 /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw2.1/firmware-5.bin

Oh now I have all the files in that git repository. Wireless still didn't work but I rebooted and went on my Windows.

PROBLEM:

And I see now that after doing sudo rm and deleting my initial configuration I somehow messed up my wireless on the Windows side. Now I can't go wireless and it doesn't even detect my wireless adapter in the device manager, even when I scan. I tried re-installing the wireless adapter but nothing changes. Now I'm stuck without wireless. I'd rather have Windows wireless working than Ubuntu since that's the OS I use. But perhaps fixing Ubuntu's will fix Windows'? Long shot.

Maybe that this information helps

My wireless-info.text. So right now in ath10k I have all the kvalo folders (8?). But before I did that I remember vaguely having only 3 folders? One of them being 9377. Matching the module infos

How can I completely wipeout and reinstall networking libs and configs?

My wifi networking has become very unstable on my computer (Dell Precision 3510, Ubuntu 16.04, 4.9 kernel) after about 18 months of use where there were no problems at all. I've spent quite some time trying to figure out where the problem lies but nothing seems to work. I've eliminated hardware as a possible problem, it is only software. I'm not really interested in suggestions about configuring routes or interfaces files. These all work fine once the connection is made. The problem is making the connection, and it only happens for my computer, no one else suffers from this problem.

I suspect it has something to do with either an incomplete update to ubuntu, or that one time someone from IT logged into my computer to try and figure out some routing issue when connected to the VPN. This happened right around the same time that the problems began, and I suspect he may have installed/updated something or made some config change that is non-obvious. Getting help from them is pretty much useless so I'm not interested in letting them on to my computer again.

I guess I'm in desperation mode now because I'm about ready to just throw it all away and do a complete re-install of Ubuntu. I'm hoping someone can help me avoid that by somehow forcing the network to be completely re-installed and re-configured. Is there a way to do this?

Need SSTP on Ubuntu 17.04 (Gnome)

Hey guys,

I'm using Ubuntu 17.04 with Gnome and absolutely have to get SSTP setup on my Laptop for work, or it's back to Windows for me.
I've followed a couple of guides that had me install PPA's for sstp-client and the sstp NetworkManager plugin, but they failed to install.

Does anyone know of a good solution for this?

Netgear AC600 Dual Band Driver

My computer doesn't have internal wireless, so I use this USB dual band wifi adapter. I want to throw 16.04 MATE on it, but the disc that contains the program and driver was made for windows only. I've heard that Ndiswrapper isn't good for wireless. Any idea what I can do or if there's a driver floating around somewhere I can use? If not, I can still share the connection between my laptop and the PC with an ethernet cable, so all is not lost, but it would be nice to get this to work.

Troubles with AWUS036ACH/8812AU

Hi there!

I bought the Alfa AWUS036ACH wifi-card some days ago, and I haven't managed it to get it working. :(
I have now tried over 4 different drivers and not one worked "properly"...
For me, it looks like the card is correctly installed but neither iwlist scan/wireshark nor airodump-ng work.

I use Xubuntu as guest inside VirtualBox, but for further information please check http://paste.ubuntu.com/25728928/

Any help would be appreciated!

Network speeds slow between Ubuntu 16.10 and Windows 10

I have windows 10 with the Ubuntu Linux subsystem acting as a server. It also has as an SMB share. The other box is an actual ubuntu installation.
All machines have modern SSD drives
I have eliminated any potential issues with cabling or switches by using a direct connection. Even with the cat6 cable directly connecting the two machines it gets only 30MB/s over rsync SSH to the Windows box from the Ubuntu box and 20MB/S from Windows to Ubuntu. The same speeds occur with SMB transfers to and from.
I have also changed the NIC cards. The windows box has a PCIE Intel NIC card. The Ubuntu box has a USB 3.0 gigabit startech USB adapter.

When I transfer to and from my macbook air to the Windows Box, I get 60/MB sec. Something tells me something is restricting speeds on the Ubuntu Box. Since it happens with any protocol or NIC that I have tried, I am stumped as to what it can be.

Thanks in advance

[ubuntu] Cannot resolve hostnames

I have strange problem with resolving hostnames on Ubuntu 16.04.2.
It's a server in local network with two interfaces: external (to the internet) and internal (to local network). Both are static configured. I'll show config below.
It was working perfectly since installed in march. Several times I've successfully made 'apt update' with no problem. Today i tried to update it again, and here the main story begins...

Code:

On previous updates there was no such problems with resolving hostnames. Server is primarily used in local network by ip address, so i don't know when this problem arise.
So here are some commands, that i executed (sorry, external ip address i replaced with #):

Code:

But nmcli didn't show any DNS configured:
Code:

IP4.GATEWAY:                            #.#.#.#

What i did:
- several times restarted server.
- several times restarted systemd-resolved, NetworkManager.
- comment and uncomment "dns=dnsmasq" in /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf (with restart service and server).
- found advice about switch off DNSSEC, but as i found it's already switched off.
- made /etc/resolv.conf static file (not symbolic link), get back to symbolic link - all with restarts.

Nothing of this helps...

So i have no any more ideas how to get DNS resolving back to work.
All advices appreciates :)

[ubuntu] slow file copy over gigabit ethernet

I'm getting extremely slow file copy speeds (450 kB/sec) over gigabit Ethernet. I've power-cycled the router and both switches (all gigabit ports) and rebooted both computers I'm copying from and to, but the speeds are still extremely slow. However, the connection information shows 1000 Mb/s on both computers. In the past when I encountered slow copy speeds, a reboot of the computers involved and/or power cycling the router and/or switches usually fixed the problem, but not this time. It's so slow that the copy dialog says it's going to take 2 hours to copy 4 GB!

How Ubuntu connects to a WPA2 PSK network

Hello folks,
I'm a newbie to this community and this is my first post. If this is a wrong place to post this, kindly direct me.
Ok, so here is my doubt. I would like to know how ubuntu 12(this is the version I'm using as my host machine) or in general a ubuntu machine connects to a WPA2 PSK network when the user selects the network to connect from the Desktop GUI. So far my assumption was any device which connects to a WPA2 Wifi should use wpa_supplicant.

The background of why I would like to get this understanding is, I have Realtek 8192EU chipset based Wifi USB Dongle. Ubuntu 12 doesn't have this driver inbuilt. Hence I downloaded the driver and compiled it, then insmod the driver. After insmod, i connected to dongle and the pop up "Wifi connections available" on the desktop appeared through which i selected the PSK network, i wanted to connect. The connection was established seamlessly as expected.

Now i disconnected the connection (not the dongle, it is still plugged into the PC) and tried to do this manually via the terminal.
When i do this manually via terminal by using the wpa_supplicant, the connection doesn't seem to get thru. I only observe repeated IOCTL errors being printed on the console.
I was a bit confused on seeming these conflicting behaviors and hence wanted to get a clear picture for experts here. am i missing to do anything at the terminal?

Command at the terminal :

wpa_supplicant -B -i wlan0 -D wext -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

My config file :
ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1

network={
ssid="ASUS"
psk="password123"
proto=RSN
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
pairwise=CCMP
group=CCMP
auth_alg=OPEN
}

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and to the Ubuntu world. I've got a problem with my freshly installed Ubuntu 17.04, I can't connect to any WiFi network cause it seems out of range even though I can connect in Windows. I've tried different solution found in various forums but they don't work for me. Can anybody help me?

[ubuntu] Weird network config problem

$

This is such a weird problem with so many pieces, but I figured the ubuntu forums has the highest traffic so I am posting it here...

I have four machines:

1) Windows 7 system running SMB shares, 192.168.1.6 on ethernet
2) Ubuntu 16.04 system running kodi 192.168.1.14 on ethernet also with SMB shares
3) Windows 10 laptop 192.168.1.68 on wifi
4) LibreElec 8.1.2 running on an AMD APU system 192.168.1.8 on wifi

The windows 7 system cannot communicate with LibreElec. I cannot ssh from 192.168.1.6 to 192.168.1.8 but I can ssh from 192.168.1.14 to 192.168.1.8. LibreElec cannot ping the windows 7 system nor can the windows 7 system ping the LibreElec one. The windows 10 laptop can access both SMB shares over wifi no problem and so can the ubuntu 16.04 system. It doesn't appear to be a problem with SMB per se because even ping doesn't work between W7 and LibreElec. I tried turning off the firewall briefly and there was still no way to access it.

Router is an ASUS Rt-N66U running firmware 380.68_4 of asuswrt-merlin.

Tune apache2 to serve up tomcat web app at domain without timeouts

I have a domain that is hosted on an unmanaged VPS server with Ubuntu 16.04 I have configured my Java EE Tomcat web app to be served up at my domain name. But the response times for the app are way too slow, progressively going toward timeouts in the browser. If I stop the apache2 service and access my web app through domain:8080 the web app performance is perfect. How do you correctly configure apache2 to serve up the tomcat web app at the domain name with good performance? I realize that the easy solution is to link all references to my web app to domain:8080, but I would like to know how to correctly configure apache2 to serve up the Tomcat web app at the domain with the same performance as using domain:8080. Thanks in advance for any help.

This is my apache2 sites-enabled file for the domain:

Code:

<VirtualHost *:80>

  # Admin email, Server Name (domain name) and any aliases
  ServerAdmin webmaster@lae-laeweb.com
  ServerName  lae-laeweb.com
  ServerAlias www.lae-laeweb.com

  # Index file and Document Root (where the public files are located)
  DirectoryIndex index.html
  DocumentRoot /var/www/html

  # Custom log file locations
  LogLevel warn
  ErrorLog /var/log/apache2/error-lae-laeweb.com.log
  CustomLog /var/log/apache2/access-lae-laeweb.com.log combined

    #ServerName www.lae-laeweb.com

    ProxyRequests On
    ProxyPass / http://lae-laeweb.com:8080/LAEWeb/ keepalive=on ttl=60
    ProxyPassReverse / http://lae-laeweb.com:8080/LAEWeb/

    <Location />
        Order allow,deny
        Allow from all
    </Location>

</VirtualHost>

This is a script I use after uploading a new .war file for my web app to tomcat:

Code:

#!/bin/bash

cd ../usr/local/apache-tomcat-8.5.23/bin

./shutdown.sh

./startup.sh

cd ../../../..

service apache2 reload

service apache2 restart

service=apache2

if (( $(ps -ef | grep -v grep | grep $service | wc -l) > 0 ))
then
echo "$service is running!!!"
else
/etc/init.d/$service restart

[ubuntu] ASUS X550JK RALINK RT3290 Wireless Wirelles Connection Keeps Dropping

Network Ubuntu Laptop to Wired Desktop. Simple right?

$

Fairly new to Ubuntu but can provide details and logs if required. I simply cannot get my wireless connected laptop to "see" the network share from my Ubuntu 17.04 desktop.

Please presume I have spent at least six hours in Google searching for solutions, because I have.

Briefly,

SYMPTOMS: The wireless laptop can easily see and connect to my **Windows** network (when the desktop has Windows booted up, and the third Windows 8 desktop) but refuses to see/recognize the second desktop when it is booted in Ubuntu. When I open "Other Locations" on the laptop, I see "Windows Network" then "[Ubuntu desktop]"-> $print" and the third Windows computer shares. No shared directories from the Ubuntu desktop.

SHARED: 2.8 Ghz Pentium desktop, Ubuntu 17.04, sharing a directory in ~home. This is a dual boot machine with Windows 7 on one drive and Ubuntu 17.04 on the second.

REQUESTING: 3.8 ghz 8 core System76 Gazelle laptop, connecting to the network modem wireless.

THIRD MACHINE: A Windows 8 machine which has no context in the issue other than it is there and can see it in "Windows Network" and access all shared files.

MODEM: This is a Cox Communications modem, combination router and cable router. All Internet connections, wired and wireless, are fine.

What I've done (tons more, but as briefly as possible: ) From the Ubuntu 17.04 desktop, enabled a directory to be shared. Samba is installed on both computers. Aligns with the official Ubuntu guide and any of the gazillion instructions on the Internet. :-)

When I go to Other Locations on the laptop, I see the current computer of course and "Windows Network." This opens the shared directories of the third Windows-only computer fine, and if I boot the second dual boot shared computer into Windows, shows those shares just fine.

When the second computer is in Ubuntu, nada, zilch, nothing. Still only shows "Windows Network."

I know I am missing something basic. Any ideas?
