Faster networking via thunderbolt or USB3?

$

0
I work on a laptop (linux mint) which sits less than 3 meters away from my server (ubuntu server) and regularly transfer large files between them. The bottleneck is the gigabit lan which connects them, topping out at about 120 megabytes per second. This isn't a massive issue for me and I wouldn't be bothered upgrading to 10g any time soon to get around it due to the cost and the fact my laptop doesn't have 10g, but it does occur to me that both machines have spare USB3 ports capable of 5gigabit throughput (albeit one way I believe) and it would be easy to add a thunderbolt card to the server for 10/40gigabit. Question is, is there any way to do this currently? My guess is there's two possible routes;

Firstly I could leave the network as it is but have the server and laptop share folders via a thunderbolt/usb connection - effectively have the server act as a mass storage device. I haven't been able to find any way to do this on the forum or googling. There are USB host-to-host cables available but the ones I've found appear to be USB2 (slower than gigabit) and windows/mac only, requiring proprietary software. Anyone managed such a thing on linux?

Secondly I could get rid of the laptop's gigabit ethernet connection and connect it to the server via a usb/thunderbolt connection masquerading as a network connection, as I know has been done on windows/mac machines and I know is a goal of the linux thunderbolt project. My guess is I would have to configure a virtual switch on the server between its incoming ethernet port, the usb/thunderbolt connection and its own default gateway such that the laptop is daisy-chained onto the network via the thunderbolt/usb connection with the server. From the look of it the plan is that in the future thunderbolt will do this out of the box, allowing a high speed network between daisychained thunderbolt devices. Again I'm drawing a blank on the forum and google on how to form the basic usb/thunderbolt network connection.

Anyone done similar, or know if either option might be possible?

[ubuntu] Remote rsync

Folks,

I look after my girlfriend's 16:04 machine remotely, I am trying to transfer a 3GB file from her machine to my 16:04 system using scp

Setting up the system on tmux it starts well but two attempts seem to have stalled around 700MB

scp can't resume like wget so am looking in to rscnc but am struggling because I usually connect to her computer using ssh and a different port 2288

Here is my scp command;

Code:

scp -P 2288 carole@remoteIP:~/Desktop/videos/Movies/FILE.mpg FILE.mpg
This transfers her file into my current directory on my machine but as mentioned two attempts have failed at around 700MB

I have tried this using rsync;

Code:

rsync -v -e 'ssh -p 2288' carole@remoteIP:~/Desktop/videos/Movies/File.mpg
receiving file list ... done
-rw-r--r--  3565088768 2015/06/14 15:02:26 File.mpg

sent 19 bytes  received 43 bytes  13.78 bytes/sec
total size is 3565088768  speedup is 57501431.74

The last entry seems to report the file correctly (Size, name etc) but nothing gets transferred.

Any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong appreciated.

Bridge network configuration for an ubuntu vm

Hi everyone,

I have a laptop from the employer where I have to connect the VPN connection of the company to be able to work from home.
What I want to achieve is finding a way to browse the web without the employer seeing my traffic.

I read that choosing "bridge" at the networking configuration for a vm would mean the vm (guest) is connected to the router I am using at home as it would be physically connected.

In conclusion, would it mean that if I have a vm with ubuntu and network configured as "bridge" that the traffic does not go through the vpn of the employer from the physical machine, or do they still can see the network traffic from this vm?

Thanks in advance!

[ubuntu] network menu and adapter presence

$

This is mainly at one location and with one network. I have a USB Wi-Fi adapter (NIC) that is Linux-compatible, including with Ubuntu 16.04.2 desktop amd64 on HDD, and it works in various locations and with various network. The NIC is Trendnet via ThinkPenguin. For this network, I plug the NIC in, wait for its LED to light up (usually it blinks, too), and wait a little longer until Ubuntu has had the normal time for connecting to a network. No connection happens. Seeing only an empty triangle icon on the top panel in Gnome, I open that icon's menu. Enable Wi-Fi is checkmarked but there's no list of networks. I can get around that by selecting Connect to Hidden Wi-Fi Network even though the network I want is not hidden, but that menu item is not visible, not even as dimmed. So, instead, I have to repeatedly click the VPN Connections menu item, maybe 20 times, because the menu item for hidden networks will likely turn up in that spot in the menu for a small fraction of a second a few times, so one of my dozens of clicks will accidentally select it, which is what I want. Then I get a dialog where I select the network I want (title bar "Connect to Hidden Wi-Fi Network", body ". . ."/"Enter the name and security details of the hidden Wi-Fi network . . . ."/"Connection: . . ."/"Network name: . . ."/"Wi-Fi security: . . .", buttons "Cancel" & "Connect") (the network I usually use here doesn't need a password), it selects the device and the network connection entry (I have one for every device/network pair and I've used them before) and I click the Connect button. Then I get an alert that no device was found (title bar "Connection failure", body "Failed to activate connection"/"(3) Device not found", & only button "Close"). (One variation is when a connection was established without that dialog and I used the dialog anyway, immediately getting the "(3) Device not found" alert despite already having a network coonnection.) Then, in the usual case, after the alert, I wait and the computer connects to the network I selected ("Connection Established"/"You are now connected to the Wi-Fi network '. . . [network name]'"). Then, if I look, the panel menu lists several networks in addition to the one I'm on. The connection is generally stable.

1. How do I get the menu to list the non-hidden networks right away and before I click on the menu?

2. How do I get the menu item for hidden networks to appear in the menu and stay up steadily so a single click is enough to select it?

3. How do I get the system to recognize that the adapter is present, not just eventually but by the time I'm trying to select a network?

I've installed the Edimax 7822ulc on my desktop machine following the instructions given here:
https://edimax.freshdesk.com/support...gher-than-v4-4

The installation seems to have worked as my wifi adapter sees the network which my cell phone and tablets have no problem connecting to

Unfortunately my desktop seems to be in an endless loop trying to connect to the wireless network. if it does manage to connect, the speeds are unacceptably slow, like 1mbps

Things had been stable for so long :(

Wlan works on my android phone, thankfully tethering, too. I started having problems connecting after in sleep mode, updated my stuff through synaptic (all upgrade-able), and then would lose connection and not be able to see any networks around me (there are at least a dozen in my building or across the street). The last thing i did was autoremove, which seemingly fixed things, then i had to reboot and no networks are visible on boot up. Any ideas? thx

[ubuntu] trying to mount hdd connected to ee brightbox2 on usb

I have a 2 TB Seagate expansion drive connected to my ee brightbox2. router. I have 2 laptops and a desktop all running Ubuntu 16.04, all of which can read and write to the drive via the network. However, I would like to mount the drive so that it appears on each machine as a permanently mounted drive accessibly from all the "save as" menus etc.
For a start I cannot find an IP address other than that of the router and it does not show up as a connected device in the router settings.
If someone could come up with detailed instructions to do this I would be more than grateful!

Ubuntu Zesty on Lenovo G580 BroadCom issues. Wireless doesn't show.

New install of Ubuntu.

I'm trying to get the wireless card to work. The wireless symbol doesn't show in the upper right part of screen. No list of wireless signals. Which is strange because they did show when I was installing. Although I couldn't get them to work while installing. If I type
Code:

sudo service network-manager restart
into the terminal the wireless symbol shows up in a popup window that says the wireless is closed.

First I ran this code.
Code:

echo -e "blacklist b43\nblacklist ssb" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
from this thread: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2229619
Because that person has the same computer as me and I figured it was the same problem, but that didn't fix it.

Then I found this thread.
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2214110
Using the code there figured out that the
pci.id is 14e4:4727 making it special case 1

and ran wireless_script to try to figure out what was going on.

Then I blacklisted b43 and ssb because the stickied thread said that might work but it didn't.

Then I read the sticked notes and the other one recommended I update so I did that and also ran wireless_script such that it pasted to
ubuntu pastebin.

http://paste.ubuntu.com/25704537/

Also ran the code to blacklist b43 and ssb again just in case having the updates would make a difference.

[ubuntu] Interal & USB wireless devices fail to turn on both unbuntu and windows OS

Hello Everyone,
Long time user First time poster.
I have been troubleshooting this wifi problem for quite awhile and I listed out all the steps I have went through below

I am having an issue with my wireless card which persists from OS to OS Internal Wireless to the wireless
USB i am using The usb wifi I am using is the Panda Wireless PAU09 N600.
This issue began on Unbuntu so I hope I can find a way to solve it here.

http://paste.ubuntu.com/25704981/

I have attempted
  1. RFkill unblock wifi
    • Rfkill list shows usb wifi hard and soft blocked interal wifi hard blocked only.
    • Upon Rfkill wifi unblock the usb wifi has no hard or soft block while the internal wifi stays the same

  2. Windows was unable to connect to wifi despite being connected.
    • Bios Restore to deafult does not effect wifi connection.

  3. Removing the blacklisting the ideapad driver software fails to work.
  4. Updating the Unbuntu OS fails to work

Although I am hoping to get this working for Ubuntu if you have any suggestions outside of the OS I am open to hearing.
I also have considered getting the wifi card replaced but I would hate to do that and have the wifi still fail to work.

In advance thank you for your assistance and time :)

[ubuntu] Converting TunnelBlick VPN to Linux OpenVPN

$

I work at a Mac company but have been using Linux since Slackware 0.99 something. I am a programmer, not a sysadmin, but have managed to get things working after enough trial and error.

I recently bought an Ubuntu laptop to replace both an ancient travel Mac laptop (so I can work when not at work) and an even more ancient Gentoo tower home computer. I have Unity or whatever it is whipped into shape enough that I don't feel the urge to revive my old fvwm setup, most of the time (how do I get it to set umask on login? How do I get it to map the MENU key to SUPER-R? Ugh) A side benefit is using it as much as possible to replace the company Mac. I have almost everything working -- email with Mutt, Slack, Pidgin. The primary missing ingredient is a work VPN which works fine with TunnelBlick on the travel Mac. I know I can't run the same VPN on both machines at once, but the travel Mac has separate office VPN certificates than the company Mac (both can connect at once, and have many many times), and the travel Mac has not been using its VPN for several weeks.

I cannot figure out how to get Ubuntu to configure the VPN. I have been through the settings, including the advanced ones, and everything looks as good as I can think of. When I try to connect, it times out one minute later with timeout messages:

NetworkManager[1090]: <warn> [1507527871.4995] vpn-connection[0x55b5ab305680,b0ec6e82-7cac-4302-8593-f1e078574021,"Office-VPN",0]: VPN connection: connect timeout exceeded.
nm-openvpn-serv[3179]: Connect timer expired, disconnecting.

I also tried passing the TunnelBlick .ovpn file to both import and openvpn, and it rejects several configuration lines.

ca openvpn_xxx-public.pem
cert first_last.company.com.crt
key first_last.company.com-private.pem
remote routerA.company.com
float 1
port 5001
lport 5001
dev tap
ping 10
comp-lzo
verb 4
mute 10
tls-client 1
pull 1

It objects to float, tls-client, and pull.

Here is the network manager's VPN configuration:

Gateway: routerA.company.com
Aujthentication:
Type: Certificates (TLS)
User cert, CA cert, Private key are the appropriate files
Use custom gateway port: 5001
Use LZO data compression
Set virtual device type: TAP
Specify ping interval: 10
Specify exit or restart ping: Restart 60
TLS Authentication:
Verify peer (server) cert usage signature
Remote peer cert TLS type: client
Verify peer (server) cert nsCertType designation
Remote peer cert nsCert designation: client

I have tried lots of variations, because I don't really know what some of these mean, and I can get extra error messages, but always get the one minute timeout.

The company doesn't mind if I use the Linux laptop, but since they've provided a company Mac laptop, making my Linux laptop work is low priority, and we're not big enough tp find some spare body to help.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I am almost salivating at the prospect of ditching the Mac except for the odd Cisco AnyConnect or web teleconferencing requirements. I am also going crazy switching between the two keyboards, so please excuse any typoes :-)

[ubuntu] Cannot play Video Content on some Websites

Hello,

Fresh installation of Ubuntu 16.04.3 on Acer Aspire S7 notebook, hardwired connection, using Chrome and Firefox. Today, previously working sites such as Velocity (https://www.velocity.com/tv-shows/wheeler-dealers/) stopped loading correctly and playing content. "Sign in with TV Provider" dialog does not display TV providers either. Works fine on VMWare Windows 7 guest running on Ubuntu host. Flash is up to date. I have tried changing MTU, spoofing user agent, using Google's DNS, disabling firewall. Any ideas welcome.

Network speed about 50% slower than it should be

I have a gigabit fiber connection with symmetrical download/upload. I'm experiencing an issue where Speedtest.net reports download speeds less than 50% of the upload speed result. My download speed is hovering between 300-400 Mbps, whereas my upload speed is consistently over 900 Mbps.

I've confirmed it's not an issue with my connection by plugging the ethernet cable that goes into my Ubuntu box into a MacBook Pro, where I'm getting the expected result (800 Mbps download, 800 Mbps upload). I've tested the connection between the Ubuntu server and my MacBook Pro using iperf3, where I got near full gigabit speeds on both download and upload. Finally, I've confirmed it's not an issue with my NIC by reproducing the issue on a known-good USB3 Gigabit ethernet adapter.

Any ideas as to why my download speed is much lower than it should be?

Quite frustrating!

Whenever the wireless connection is weak/flaky, gnome-shell freezes for 15-30 seconds, and repeats every few minutes until I locate a stronger Wifi signal. Also, if there's ANY issue with wireless connecting (say a router problem), gnome-shell freezes for 15-30 seconds, and repeats every few minutes.

Wifi speeds much slower than on windows

$

Hello, I am a brand new ubuntu user and so far I love it, with one exception. My wifi connection is pretty terrible in proportion to what I got before I switched from windows. On a solid ethernet connection I get around 500 down, 50 up, on both ubuntu and windows, and on the regular wifi connection I would get around 250/50 on windows.

On ubuntu so far I have gotten speeds around 1.5 down 1 up over wifi which is terrible compared to before. To clarify my router is a duel band 2.4ghz/5ghz router, so there are two separate wifi channels to connect to and ubuntu only picks up the 2.4ghz one, which if I recall, I got the 5ghz one on windows.

Like I said, I am new to linux, so if I need to provide you with information from the terminal I will provide you with it as fast as possible.

Hello, I'm new in the forum and in linux also...

I would like to know if it should be possible to run a script every time I have the wlan0 up or down event... like for ppp connection...

I looked for by I found anything on wireless connections...

I'm interested in these two situations:
1 - when wlan0 comes up I need to execute a shell script
2 - when wlan0 goes down I need to execute a shell script

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 17.04 connection to BT fax-modem unusable

$

I am using Ubuntu 17.04 with a BT Fax Modem from Trusty. I have had this connection working before with earlier versions of Ubuntu, and I have paired the device, and can see it is connected to /dev/ttyS0 as it reports on the baud rate.
#sudo setserial -avG /dev/ttyS0
gives
#/dev/ttyS0 uart 16550A port 0x03f8 irq 4 baud_base 115200 spd_normal skip_test

However, if I use e.g. Gtkterm to communicate with the device, it reports "Cannot open /dev/ttyS0: Permission denied".

I have ensured that I am in the same permissions group as dialout (sorry if my terminology is incorrect).

If I use chmod 666 /dev/ttyS0, then I stop receiving the error, but if I try to type AT commands (as a prelude to getting it to work with Efax-gtk), I get no response. Typing "AT<CR>" should provide the response "OK", which I don't receive. If the baud rate were wrong, I would expect to see corruption, which I don't see.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Many thanks,
