[all variants] NIS/NFS breaks xorg

Hi!

The clients on our network get authentication information from NIS and mount the home directory via NFS.
Since i updated the NIS/NFS server to debian 9 the login managers on the clients are basically broken. Sometimes the login works, sometimes it doesnt.
The nsswitch.conf:

Code:

passwd:        compat nis
group:          compat nis
shadow:        compat nis
gshadow:        files

hosts:          files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns myhostname
networks:      files

protocols:      db files
services:      db files
ethers:        db files
rpc:            db files

netgroup:      nis

the autofs file:

Code:

* -fstype=nfs,default,vers=3,retry=0 10.0.0.3:/home/&
journalctl tells errors like:

Code:

Apr 02 13:11:46 AStA-SR-R kernel: i915 0000:00:02.0: firmware: failed to load i915/kbl_dmc_ver1_01.bin (-2)

Apr 02 13:11:46 AStA-SR-R avahi-daemon[433]: chroot.c: open() failed: No such file or directory

(which dont seem related, but xorg stuff:)

Apr 02 13:11:47 AStA-SR-R /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[514]: (WW) VGA arbiter: cannot open kernel arbiter, no multi-card support

things i tried:
setting MINGID for YP to 0.
Removing any desktop environment generated configs from user home.
chmod 777 ~

Any ideas? Im using Ubuntu 18.04 on the clients.

Lubuntu 16.04 can't connect to wireless

Recently installed Lubuntu 16.04, everything works except does not recognize any wireless networks. Works fine with ethernet connection. Following advice here, I am trying to identify my wireless adapter and install the appropriate module, but am not sure how to tell which is my wireless adapter when I check through possible lists. Sudo lsusb returns this list:

Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0a5c:21f3 Broadcom Corp.
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 046d:c52b Logitech, Inc. Unifying Receiver
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 5986:0299 Acer, Inc
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

I also am not sure if the solution is something more simple, like taking the system out of airplane mode. Unfortunately, the taskbar at the bottom of the screen has recently disappeared, so that is something else I'm working on fixing!

is there now or will there be soon an iso for Ubuntu that has the BCM wifi driver in the live session files so you dont have to download it everytime you do a live session?
this is a major pita. Needs to be fixed.

[ubuntu] Ipv6 DNS address leaking

$

I am using Ubuntu 18.04 with all the updates. I am also using a VPN that supports Ipv6. After setting up my VPN some time ago I kept getting stuff from Thailand where I live. I finally found doileak.com. When I run the doileak.com test I had several issues I corrected, but one I have not been able to correct.
IPv6 Request Source:

Your IPv6 request and IPv4 request are coming from different sources.2403:6200:8851:d7f9:7806:8845:5358:a895 Jasmine International Tower (), Thailand (AS)

Your IPv6 request seem not to go through the same route as your IPv4. If you are using a proxy or VPN, make sure it supports IPv6 or you are easily identified.

Doing a lookup query I get:
mlempenau@mlempenau18:~$ nslookup www.google.com
Server: 127.0.0.53
Address: 127.0.0.53#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: www.google.com
Address: 172.217.11.36
Name: www.google.com
Address: 2607:f8b0:4006:815::2004

This tells me I have Ipv6 and for that matter Ipv4 correctly set up (I think!) so people think I'm in the US. Yet when I run doileak.com it gets something different. I'm not sure what to do next to determine where my leak is. Any help would be appreciated.

One more observation. I use Windows 10 from time to time. I set windows up with the VPN and changed all the DNS settings. It works just fine and without the above problem.

Slow Ethernet connection, but fast WiFi

Hi,

I have a laptop connected to a switch with a new Cat5e. I have Win10 and Kali installed on it, all fine, But when I switch to Kali, wired connection seems to be VERY SLOW (0.12Mbps, just checked it). Using WiFi it goes to 50Mbps. This is not happening on my Windows, so my wired connection is faster than WiFi (wich is normal)

Does anybody know what can I be doing wrong?

PD.: I'm unable to change my static IP, even changing the interfaces file and restarting the network service.

I have somehow removed my ability to use wifi on ubuntu and I can't tell you what I did. I've been to multiple forums looking for a fix and a common error that pops up when I type:

Anyone have any suggestions?

[xubuntu] Unable to print to Windows 10 SAMBA shared printer

$

My wife leaves her computer on 24/7, so I made her computer our print server. In the past, with Windows XP and 7, I could simply share her printer and then connect to it from my Xubuntu machines, no problem. It always just worked. However, when we bought her a computer upgrade several years ago (which came with an upgrade to Windows 10), I could no longer connect to her printer. I've had to use sneakernet: save whatever-it-is to a flash drive as a PDF, and print it from her machine.

I can print over the network from her Windows laptop, and I can install the printer on my Xubuntu machines. However it always fails to actually print to them, saying the share is inaccessible. If I enter her credentials I'm able to browse to the printer share and select it, but the Verify fails and printing never goes through. I don't understand what's going on here; anyone have an idea?

How to set up WiFi hotspot in 18.04, similar to mobile hotspot in Windows 10?

$

Hello all,

I'm new to the forum here. I've searched for the exact query already and didn't seem to find suitable answers, thus posting this. Windows 10 has nifty trick called Mobile Hotspot which shares the computer's internet (Wired or Wireless) with upto 8 devices by creating a Wifi hotspot. Searching for its equivalent in Ubuntu, I found answers for creating a hotspot (which disconnects from the connected network, thus a hotspot without internet) and for routing Ethernet to Wifi hotspot, but not for this. Any suggestions are welcome.

To clarify, I already use mobile hotspot in Windows 10, so I'm confident my laptop's hardware supports this feature: simultaneously connected to a Wifi and routing its internet through a hotspot. If it is a case of lack of driver support in Ubuntu, then there's not much that can be done. However, if there is some option to enable this feature or if its already present that I've blindly overlooked, please enlighten.

access to samba share fails

Hi Guys,

I have an Ubuntu Server setup for file share. I administrator the server mostly via Webmin.
I have multiple users accessing the shared folders, each having a secure username and password.

All accounts and folder share permissions are configured correctly as I can access all as intended.
All users have win10, win8 and win7 pc's with the same antivirus installed and configured.

I have 1 pc refusing to connect to the ubuntu server with "Username and password incorrect"
Regardless of the username and password I use, always the same error occur.
These credentials work just fine from any other pc.

i also enabled the smb1 features.

Below is the last few lines in the samba log file for this user

Hi,

I have been trying for almost 2 months to get my Panda Wireless (PAU09) USB adapter working since I upgraded to Ubuntu 18.04. This thread has gotten me the closest to success and the best I got was web pages would load, but then the wifi would cut out about 2 minutes later. I've attached the wireless-info for reference. Please help!

Thank you!

wifi not working with 18.04LTS

Hello!

I also have the same issue after upgrading to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS - wifi not working properly anymore. Some of the simptoms are:
  • It does not detect if a cable is plugged in, in order to switch to a wired connection
  • it does not recognize the WiFi password for some of the networks I use (I made sure the password I use is correct)
  • sometimes, after a long idle period, it connects by itself, and it is working for a while
  • there are networks that work without issues, but most of them do not

I followed the steps in this thread and also the one with the Wireless Script.

Here is my pastebin link:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/XhrdqdHd62/

I also attached the tar.gz file generated by the script.

Can you help, please?

Thank you!

Why is the network not working on boot and why am I getting a IP even if DHCP is off?

I am on 18.04.2 with the latest updates and I have the following netplan config file:

Code:

    network:
      version: 2
      renderer: networkd
      ethernets:
        eno1:
          dhcp4: no
          dhcp6: no
          optional: true
        enp2s0:
      bonds:
        bond0:
          interfaces: [eno1, enp2s0]
          addresses: [192.168.3.5/24]
          gateway4: 192.168.3.253
          nameservers:
            addresses: [208.67.222.222,208.67.220.220,8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4]
          dhcp4: no
          parameters:
            mode: active-backup
            primary: eno1

It was working fine until I updated the system at the beginning of this week, update which included the kernel and several more packages. I haven't kept track so I cannot give any further information about it.
I only know that the update disabled all the services and targets for ZFS I compiled from trunk.

When I boot I cannot access the server and the server cannot access the local LAN or the WAN. If I log in physically I get this:

Code:

    IP address for enp2s0: 192.168.3.97
    IP address for bond0:  192.168.3.5

Then if I issue a netplan apply the server is back to normal!
However, I still get an IP even if I specified dhcpX: no. The router (OpenWRT) has not even a preassigned IP for the MAC address of either network card!

I tried to check the services:

Code:

$ systemctl status networkd-dispatcher.service networking.service network-online.target network-pre.target network.target | cat

I've been trying to install my wifi drivers for Ubuntu, but its not working. there is a SH file, but when i run it, it says make command not found.
This is the link for the drivers. https://www.thinkmart.cc/download
It says in the readme, just run the install.sh and you're good to go. but it keeps giving me the make command not found.
I don't have access to an ethernet cord either btw.
