network shares not visible

I have set up a home network with a ubuntu DNS server and samba server. There are linux and Windows clients. When I open a file manager on a linux client and go to "network" sometimes the other clients are visible and sometimes they are not (they are booted up of course and have shares defined).
In order to connect to the ones which don't show up in the file manager I enter smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (xxx = client IP) then the client shares become accessible.
What can I do in order to make a client always visible on the networkt?

Proper Method to Manage DNS

I like to occasionally change my DNS. While using Ubuntu 12.04 I had no issue manging DNS preferences through the Network Manager GUI under the IPv4 settings. Back in May I updated my OS to Ubuntu-Mate 16.04. I went along managing my DNS like I use to though the Network Manger GUI assuming changes were being made until one day when I visited ipleak.net and noticed any changes I made through Network Manger did not take.

NetworkManger.conf does not indicate any nameservers. Doing command “$ nmcli -t -f IP4.DNS device show enp2s0” lists the nameservers configured via Network Manger GUI. However, ipleak.net indicates I am using the nameservers listed in my resolv.conf file. Is the resolv.conf file the only way to manage my DNS? What is the proper way to identify DNS of choice?

Wifi disconnects after upgrading to 16.04

A few days ago I upgraded from 14.04 to 16.04 and now my wireless network is disconnecting every few minutes. I usually need to reboot the computer in order to get it working again. Sometimes disabling the network, removing the remembered network and then reconnecting helps, but again only for a few minutes.

I ran the wireless script, here are the details:

Code:

I noticed that the Power managment is almost always on, I have tried disabling it with sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off as soon as I connect to the network it is set back on.

while setting up my shares from ubuntu server 16 I got into this situation:

I mount 2 partition coming off different disks, this is my fstab:

Code:

UUID=8cedecd9-1c22-4ebf-86fa-c1ab653e8f33 /home/storage ext4 defaults 0 0
UUID=8f190af3-ec23-43e2-9391-abfee82620ae /home/downloads ext4 defaults 0 0

I have rw access from CLI, these are permissions from ls:

Code:

drwxr-xr-x  3 microserver microserver  4096 Aug  8 23:12 storage
drwxr-xr-x  3 microserver microserver  4096 Aug  8 23:09 downloads

samba shares:

Code:

[microserver_share]
        path = /home/microserver/microserver_share
        browseable = yes
        writeable = yes
        valid users = microserver
        create mask = 0777
        directory mask = 0777

[downloads]
      copy = microserver_share
      path = /home/downloads

[storage]
      copy = microserver_share
      path = /home/storage

I log in from windows the user "microserver"
RW to 'microserver_share' but only read permissions to 'downloads' e 'storage'

If I change approach and mkdir sub-folders, one each partition and share them as:

Code:

[downloads]
      copy = microserver_share
      path = /home/downloads/downloads

[storage]
      copy = microserver_share
      path = /home/storage/storage

RW without issues
to my knowledge there is no functionality impact beside longer path but I can't undertand the scenario
is it mount or permission related?

Issues with iptables after configuring fail2ban

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 as my squid proxy server, I configured iptables to set the default input policy to Deny & to only allow traffic from a specific IP on port 3128 to pass through the firewall and it worked perfectly. I then configured fail2ban & it has rewritten my iptables & it now looks like this,

Code:

Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target    prot opt source              destination
fail2ban-ssh  tcp  --  anywhere            anywhere            multiport dports ssh

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
target    prot opt source              destination

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target    prot opt source              destination

Chain fail2ban-ssh (1 references)
target    prot opt source              destination
RETURN    all  --  anywhere            anywhere

Yet strangely the iptables rules I set earlier to only allow 3128 on specific IP's seems still to be working as I can't connect from IPs that I didn't add to the firewall before setting up fail2ban but when I try & look at my rules I see the policy above which is set to ACCEPT as default. Any ideas as to what's going wrong?

Cannot Connect to WiFi After Upgrading to Ubuntu 16.04

Recently I upgraded to Ubuntu 16.04 from 14.04 and now I am having issues connecting to the internet. Every time I try to connect to a wireless network, it tries to connect for a while and then gives up. At first not even the wired ethernet connection was working to connect to the internet. But then I read through these forums and added:

Code:

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

to /etc/network/interfaces. Now I can connect via the wired connection but it is listed as "device not managed." However WiFi is still definitely broken and I have not yet been able to come across any solution to fix that yet.

I have gone to the Additional Drivers tab of Software & Updates. There is only one option and it does not appear to affect WiFi - it is listed as "Unknown:Unkown". I have tried with the box checked for "Using Processor microcode firmware for Intel CPUs from intel-microcode (proprietary)" and "Do not use the device". It doesn't appear to impact anything. I've also restarted the network manager after each time.

I have also tried
Code:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source

But that seemed to have no effect.

Here are my specs:
Computer: Lenovo X1 Carbon
Operating system: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (I also dual boot with Windows 7, probably not important)
OS Type: 64-bit
Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev 83)

Now for the information dump....

Output of ifconfig:

UPDATE: Issue solved:

I downloaded Wild Man's links here and followed his instructions. At first it didn't work. But when I rebooted it actually connected to the wireless network (woot!). But wait, it still didn't work. Even though it said it was connected I couldn't reach any sites. Then I rebooted again (because hey it kind of worked the last time). And then on reboot Ubuntu somehow figured out something was up and started an auto-fix. Now it works. I have no idea what Ubuntu did during the reboot but it did something that brought a terminal screen that ran some stuff that fixed the issue.

made myself a pxe server on my htpc / server the other day. works, except the nfsroots for each image is very slow. iperf is showing 931Mbit between laptop and server but installation is taking twice as long if not longer than with a flash drive. Tested in virtualbox as well as bare metal. No idea where to start to figure this out. Requesting assistance and guidance.

[ubuntu] Using Ubuntu as a SIP Re-directing Proxy?

$

I'm trying to configure a ubuntu cloud server that will act as a proxy to my sip phone.
I've been unable to get the siproxd setup to work.

Can anyone help with what steps need to be done?

My sip account is with voip.ms, and on my soft phone, I am able to choose a proxy server, but I've only had luck with getting it to register, not actually make a call. Even the echo test call fails.

1) normal proxy setup for sip?
2) NAT redirect to the real sip server?

[ubuntu] Connection timed out ; no servers could be reached error

I have configured a DNS server in Linux Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. But when I type "dig -x 8.8.8.8" from any client's machine while changing its nameserver in /etc/resolv/conf file to the IP address of my DNS server which is 192.168.0.192 and also changing its dns-nameserver in /etc/network/interfaces to address of my DNS server, I am not able to get any response from my clients machine. I am getting this error on clients machine " Connection timed out: no servers could be reached".
Moreover When I type " ping -c 1 8.8.8.8 " on clients machine , I get a response " .
Can anybody please help me to make my Clients machine work properly and go through my DNS server on which I have set BIND to act as a Caching or Forwarding DNS server.
Note : I have done configuration for BIND server from this website:

On Lubuntu 16.04, I have installed network-manager-pptp.

I then, from the Network Manager applet, click
VPN Connections, then Configure VPN, then Add, but there are no VPN options in the Choose a Connection Type dropdown.

Any suggestions?

14.04 Trusty cannot get Ralink RT3090 WiFi to work

$

Hi,

I have a laptop (MSI Cr620) that uses a Railink RT3090 device for the wifi.

As I was having problems with a previous version of Ubuntu, I decided to upgrade to 16.04 - but the install meant I could not install anything from the Software centre, nor using apt-get. I therefore installed 14.04, and had everything working except the wifi.

I have checked the forums, and not had any joy.

I have checked the Fn F10 to ensure I have wi-fi on, and I can see when it switches off, but I cannot detect any wireless networks. With the previous Ubuntu, I could. Therefore, I know this is a change from the install of Ubuntu.

I have done a sudo lspci -v and the relevant part is below:-

Code:

05:00.0 Network controller: Ralink corp. RT3090 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe
    Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. [MSI] Device 6891
    Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 19
    Memory at f4000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
    Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 3
    Capabilities: [50] MSI: Enable- Count=1/32 Maskable- 64bit+
    Capabilities: [70] Express Endpoint, MSI 00
    Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting
    Capabilities: [140] Device Serial Number 00-00-86-f8-1b-6d-62-6c
    Kernel driver in use: rt2800pci

I read that the driver may be incorrect, but I haven't found anything that works.

Any help would be most appreciated.

I have a clean install of 16.04 on a laptop with wireless and a 14.04.4 upgrade to 16.04 on a desktop wired.

The i5 laptop can see the i7 desktop and connect fine to shares but the desktop does not see the laptop at all.
i7 is desktop, i5 is laptop. I only need basic browsable file share between 2 pc's.

Issues installing Edimax AC450 driver

$

I've been trying for hours to install the driver for my Edimax Wifi USB adapter, and I need to connect to my 5G internet (the 2.4 disconnects regularly and is atrociously slow).

I have the Edimax AC450 EW-7711ULC, and I'm running Ubuntu 16.04. I've tried two methods to install the driver, both to no avail.

At first, I tried installing using the official driver from the Edimax website (http://www.edimax.com/edimax/downloa...450/ew-7711ulc). I got a date-time error, which I resolved, but more and more errors occured when I used 'make', so I had to try a different method.

I used ndiswrapper to install the driver for Windows. Ndiswrapper installed it and detected the adapter, but the adapter itself will not work.

Just for reference, here are my outputs for ifconfig, iwconfig, lsmod, and lshw -C network.

[server] network not working after black out

$

Hello folks,

i'm running Ubuntu Server 16.04 on a Raspberry PI3 that I use as a home server. After a black out i'm not longer able to connect to the network. Apparently the ethernet card is working (leds are blinking) but both wifi and ethernet are now disabled (check the attached picture) and the logical name of the network card has been changed from eth0 to something different. How can I possibly bring back to life my ethernet card?

Thank you!

I've got a Lenovo W520, i'm trying to connect to a cisco VPN with it and having no luck at all. I had this working on an older version of ubuntu (can't remember which version now) but it stopped after an upgrade.

I have tried vpnc and network-manager-vpnc with no luck.

here's the syslog output when i attempt vpnc:

From the log output the UI seems more successful but it still doesn't connect. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated...

ah also, and i dont know if this is helpful info or just noise, but i needed libgcrypt11 for some applications i need for work so i installed some random package off the internet. good news is, eclipse and brackets work fine. i dont know if it would impact vpn or not. it didn't work before i installed all that either but i didn't capture logs before.

[ubuntu] Problems accessing Internet via ASUS USB-N!3 Adapter

I recently purchased an ASUS USB-N13 Wi-fi adapter for my desktop running Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty 64x. I installed the driver using the instructions given in this post http://askubuntu.com/questions/16862...reless-adapter downloading the correct Linux driver from Realtek and also installed the fixes suggested in this post http://askubuntu.com/questions/45675...h-ubuntu-14-04.

When plugged in, my network is recognised,

http://www.nodular-prurigo.org.uk/images/network1.jpeg

but I cannot connect any program (Firefox, Chrome, Filezilla etc.) to the internet. Firefox just gives me this. I have then to use a wired connection which is what I want to get rid of.

http://www.nodular-prurigo.org.uk/images/network2.jpeg

lsusb gives the following output
Code:

so it would appear that it is working. I am frustrated as in researching for a wireeless adapter this one was suggested as the easiest to install within Ubuntu. Any help or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Please bear in mind I have limited experience 'under the hood' of Linux, so walk me through if you can.

Thanks.
